Overheard funny family discussion the other day.

Sadly, I remember my mom threatening me as an adult (I was probably 20) that if I did not go on ToT with her that she would not ride anything else with me for the rest of the trip. Well I rode ToT, and never again. She still teases me about it, however now that she is a bit older, she said that she is all done riding that one too. :D

Ha. That's nothing. My friends and I witnessed an actual melt down during NYE '11. This dad just stopped in his tracks and so did the 5 kids he was with and his wife and he all of a sudden started exclaiming, "NO EXISTO! NO EXISTO!" while covering his eyes... for my non Spanish speaking friends, that means "I DON'T EXIST! I DON'T EXIST!". I don't know if this is like Frank Costanza's "Serenity Now!" strategy or he was imbalanced but at any rate, poor guy had enough!

I got such a comical mental image from this (not to mention the Castanza reference) I chuckled out loud. Thanks for the laugh. :)

ahh...I can't say much about this for a couple of reason.
1. as other poster have mentioned. context.
2. I just watched a video of our first year as a family at WDW....I taped everything including my wife and I tricking my son into riding ToT. Things like "It's just like kiddie Downtime at Lake Compounce (a kiddie drop ride at our tiny local amusement park)" and " It's not closed in...well it is...but the ride is like Haunted Mansion"

The worst part? The kid was going through a little stint where he was afraid of elevators.
Well he backed out at the last minute...and the CM walked him and my wife to chicken out exit....
which was....you guessed it..an elevator. I wish my wife had the video cam at the time so I could see the CM's face when she told him " I'm sorry we need another exit...he's afraid of elevators.

Where are they handing out those parent of the year awards again???o_O

I've seen a couple of other comments and people chiming in on each side of the "make 'em try it or don't push them" discussions so I wanted to say for the record..My son (who was 6-7 at the time) insisted that although he was scared and freaked out that he was going to ride it by the time we left for home.

After his amazing over the top reaction to not even wanting to even get on the 'chicken out' elevator (he and my wife had to use a fire escape to get out!!), I gently and consistently assured him that it was quite alright and that he should NOT try to go back on.
Well he had his way and made it on the ride the last night of our vaca. I gotta admit I was pretty proud of the little dude.

FYI - He's been a thrill ride junkie ever since.

Well I generally have to force DD4 to try anything, so if anyone sees me at the World you will hear something like that come out of my mouth, but that is only because if I didn't all we'd ever do is people watch. That being said, the 1 ride DD was dying to ride was SM (a ride that my stomach loathes). I mean seriously, what are the odds!! Long story short, I sucked it up and rode with her and DH and cried like a baby which DD found quite funny. While my tummy was not happy, the rest of me was happy to finally see what all the hoopla is about.

AH I am glad to know we aren't the only family where the adults use hypocrisy, lies, threats, bribery, etc to get their way.... which leads me to OUR family story about DGS6 who has been going to WDW since he was 5 and is the one that likes to dig his feet in and cry he doesn't want to go on that ride. OF COURSE his mother and sister are the daredevils that LOVE all roller coasters including rides like TOT..so he has been forced to ride everything he meets the height requirement ...unless he manages to tag with Nana who is a wimp and only will do Space, skips all roller coasters...and doesn't like Splash much or Kali either unless I am in the mood for wet... Last visit to the world he was forced again to enter TOT, see the YETI (somehow the YETI is always there on the EE ride when DGS is on it and it terrifies him) and do RR too since he met height requirement this year..now DGS6 did get revenge on mom and sister when they got on Dinosaur, which he has always loved. I guess a few minutes into the ride DD1 was startled by the ride and says out loud WOW that was kinda scary! To which DGS replies " See what I been telling you !!"
Haha this was the ride he got to see mom get scared after all the rides she made him ride scared or not!

The rides my mother tricked/forced/wouldn't let me not ride at a young age:

1. The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror
2. Doctor Doom's FearFall
3. Jurassic Park River Adventure
4. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster
5. Jaws
6. Revenge of the Mummy

Granted, I'm glad she did now because I love thrill rides. But then, it was cruel (but probably funny). At Universal's Islands of Adventure, she told me that the Jurassic Park ride with a big drop was a different ride than River Adventure. So, I hopped on River Adventure thinking it was a gentle boat ride. Yeah, I cried. I then proceeded to cry hysterically on Doctor Doom's FearFall once I was strapped in and heard "Doom bots, turn to maximum extraction. I don't want to miss a drop!". A kind ride operator asked if I should be taken off, and I said yes. However, my mom said no and then we proceeded to launch up the 200 ft. tower while I was crying. But I got off and absolutely loved. Same for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Except, the ride broke down before launching and we sat there for an eternity waiting to launch while I cried, but I eventually loved it and was screaming "YEAH!" as we zoomed through the darkness.

My moral for the story is, I'm glad my mom forced me on more intense rides. It seemed cruel at the time, but I think it helped flourish my love for theme parks and the more intense rides in general. Now, I will ride The Incredible Hulk Coaster repeatedly, ride Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at least 5 times each throughout the day, etc.

I know this isn't Disney Related but my sister is terrified of flume rides. I got her on th Jarasic Park one in Universalbecause you can't see the drop. She thought it was a boat ride vershion of dinosaur all until we hit the drop. Her face on the picture was priceless, her eyes were poped half way out of her head.

Yeah, my mom said she thought the drop was the size of the Pirates of the Caribbean. To a 7 year old version of myself, the drop on Jurassic Park River Adventure was the longest, steepest, scariest thing ever.

Have you had problems with your ears before on drop/thrill rides?
Talk to your Doc. I have a heart condition known as PSVT. When I was diagnosed with it way back when, one of the first things my silly self asked the Doc about was continuing to be able to ride thrill rides and such. Since PSVT is not, generally, life-threatening I was given the "all clear", which is a good thing 'cause this ol' boy LOVES him some thrill rides...! :)
Just ask your Doc. He/she may very well give you clearance Clarence. ;)

I don't do coasters or rides with big drops (well, I do Splash and Kali but they're not THAT intense). My condition is not life-threatening but can cause motion sickness, nausea, vertigo and more for days/weeks, so I don't risk it. I'll stick with the "mild but wild" rides.

I'm glad you have clearance though!

Thanks on the clearance thing!
But yea, I wouldn't risk it either if it was gonna' affect me for days or weeks afterward.
Although, I'll never forget the first time we rode Mission:Space in '04. Oldest DD said to me as we were getting off... "Daddy. Did you feel your face peeling back?!?!" My reply... "Yes. And it was AWESOME!!!"
Plus, Disney has plenty of other rides that give me plenty of thrills other than flipping me around, so I guess if clearance was someday revoked, I know I would still be OK.

The PSVT is kinda' a kooky thing. I have meds for it that I can take on an "as needed" basis, but twice I've had to be converted by an adenosine IV. Bein' flatlined, even for only a coupla' seconds, is not a good feeling...! It's Like the EMT told me last time on the way to the ER...
"I can help ya', but I gotta' kill ya' for a few seconds, first." She knew I understood 'cause I had been there before, and it sucked for a bit, but WHAT A RELIEF when it was over...! :)

Oh, and somethin' else I meant to post...sorry, I'm gettin' old...! ;)
When DW first went on ToT in '04 she came off in tears and swore up one side and down the other that she would NEVER go on it again.
When we went back in '07 she was bound and determined to conquer her fears. No dice. She came off in tears again, and swore same. And, for the record, she did in fact, NOT do it on our last trip this past July.
I have to give my sweetie major credit though. For a woman that doesn't even like to fly (which is one of the safest forms of transportation ever invented) she's a real trooper. She'll go on, pretty much, everything at WDW except ToT!
Loves ya', hon! ;) :)
