Pre-Trip Our first ever DELUXE break from real life: a Jan-Feb 2016 PTR

SPOILER! We originally booked for CBR, as you'll read below, but ended up upgrading to OKW!!! Our first ever deluxe stay. Can't wait!

***************************

Hi! So, here I am, planning yet another trip. I just finished our January 2015 TR, which you can read here. I've already been planning this next trip, but couldn't stand the thought of writing a pre-trip before the other TR was done. So here we go.

I was talking to mom a few weeks ago, after accidentally browsing around resort reservations and OOPS finding a good deal for CBR... so we mentioned it to dad, and booked! It'll be my fifth trip, mom's sixth, and also dad's fifth, I think.

I'm actually surprised that dad wants to come along again this year, since he normally likes to be a bit more "worldly" than hitting up WDW year after year, but he loved everything about the trip last year so didn't hesitate to jump on board with us again.

So far, we have a room-only reservation for CBR from January 27-February 6, 2016. We stumbled across Play, Stay, Dine and Save last year, and we're hoping for a similar ticket + dining package to add to our room reservation over the next few months. I'm sure we'll find something between now and late fall. We're not super excited about going to CBR instead of POR or POFQ, but the price difference was about $40 per night, so for now, we'll stick with it! If prices change, we'll likely move. Really, it's only for the water taxi service to DTD, which we absolutely love. My family actually stayed at CBR once before (without me!) and they liked it, so I'm sure it would be fine.

Here's the cast of the trip, all in red, from our 2015 trip.

Our plan is as follows. I managed to get most of our ADRs made this morning, at the 180 day mark, minus the Fantasmic Dinner Package at Mama Melrose's, Akershus, and Trail's End. I called to see what the problem was, and was told that they're blocked at the moment but may open up in a few days. So I'll keep trying.

Wed, Jan 27
-Early morning drive to YHZ, Halifax, Nova Scotia
-Direct flight (on points!) lands at MCO at 7pm
-DME to CBR (or POR/POFQ if we end up switching)
-Quick service at the resort (the Shutters menu doesn't turn my crank and we'll be tired anyway)

Thurs, Jan 28
-Magic Kingdom day 1
-Cinderella's Royal Table: booked for 6:40pm; I hear the food is sometimes sub-par, but mom has her heart set on eating in the castle and it will be cool just to experience the atmosphere; we don't really care about meeting characters but I'm sure it'll be entertaining and worth a few pics!
-Wishes at 8

Fri, Jan 29
-EPCOT day 1
-Les chefs de France: booked for 6:10pm; another one of mom's choices
-IllumiNations at 9

Sat, Jan 30
-Animal Kingdom (AM extra magic hours - see the animals while they're active!)
-Rainforest Café: booked for 5:45pm; I'm not super excited about the menu, but mom really wants to give it a shot.

Sun, Jan 31
-Hollywood Studios (AM extra magic hours)
-Mama Melrose's (Fantasmic Dinner Package): not available to reserve until 180 days before Jan 31, so I'll try in a few days
-Fantasmic at 7

Mon, Feb 1
-Potential day off/Downtown Disney/resort hopping
-The Turf Club at Saratoga Springs: booked for 5:35pm; my pick, mostly because I really want to see SSR!

Tues, Feb 2
-EPCOT day 2 (PM extra magic hours)
-Lunch at Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club: booked for 12:50pm
-Akershus (Norway): not available to reserve until 180 days before Feb 2, so I'll try in a few days
-IllumiNations at 9

Wed, Feb 3
-Magic Kingdom day 2 (PM extra magic hours)
-Be Our Guest: booked for 6:30pm; my pick, since we loved lunch there and I hear dinner is even better!
-Wishes at 8

Thurs, Feb 4
-EPCOT day 3 (AM extra magic hours)
-Trail's End at Fort Wilderness: not available to reserve until 180 days before Feb 4, so I'll try in a few days
-IllumiNations at 9

Fri, Feb 5
-Boma breakfast buffet: 10:30am; I absolutely CANNOT wait for this; we absolutely love Boma and go almost every time we're at WDW
cleardot.gif

-Magic Kingdom day 3
-Wishes at 10
(we may do AK again instead, and potentially the Wild Africa Trek!)

Sat, Feb 6
-Quick breakfast at the resort
-DME to MCO
-Flight leaves from MCO at noon; three flights total and two different carriers to get home, which may end up being a disaster, but who cares!

I have been really hoping that the new night show at AK might be started by the time we're there again, but it sounds like March 2016 is their target. Maybe I'll cross my fingers and hope for a preview? Nah, probably too ambitious.

I'm also curious what state Disney Springs will be in come the end of January. Last year, it was quite heavily under construction and not much new stuff was open yet.

Any thoughts? I am ALWAYS open to ideas, suggestions, pointers, corrections...

I got a PIN code too! I used to get them all the time and booked each one, then one year I got one and we did not book a trip and the PIN codes dried up! Serioulsy, this is the first code I have had since 2012! We have gone on trips but never got a code again until last week! I AM BOOKING THIS ONE, not taking another chance!

Enjoying your planning, your trip is very close!

Congrats on the code! They're such a great bonus.

We're now 16 days out and I can't believe it's so close! Our countdown started even before the 180 day mark and now it's just more than two weeks til we head to the airport for the flight "home." We are all starting to get excited, despite the massive cost of the trip this year thanks to the terrible Canadian-US exchange rate. I guess you can't take it with you when you're dead!

So all our ADRs are booked, and we got every one we wanted. FP+ is also all taken care of. I picked up a cheap travel pillow at the dollar store yesterday, along with a travel sized mouthwash, laundry detergent, and some lozenges just in case.

I called Disney today for a couple of reasons. First, our luggage tags and DME tickets haven't shown up yet. Two trips ago, our luggage tags never arrived and we ended up having to "lug" our luggage ourselves, which is a minor inconvenience but meant spending more time than we'd planned at MCO before getting on the DME. Hopefully they'll show up in the mail soon. The CM said everything looked good on their end, but he would "hit resend" just in case.

I also called to adjust the room requests I had made during online check-in for OKW. For some reason, when I went in to edit our selections online, the options were greyed out. I had originally selected upper floor and Miller Road Area. Based on some reviews, a good look at the OKW map, and some helpful tips from other WDWmagic users, I decided to swap the Miller Road Area selection for Fairway View. Dad is a golfer so I'm sure he'll appreciate it. The CM was helpful, energetic, and really wanted to help with ADRs, but I had to disappoint her by telling her we have all of that taken care of already. She also wanted to know if we'll be celebrating anything during our upcoming trip. The only thing I could think of was "escaping winter," and she laughed and said she would make a note of it. Maybe they'll have some sunscreen waiting for us at check-in.

I suppose that's all for now. I'm heading out of town this weekend, but as soon as I'm back, packing and last minute shopping will start. I've triple checked my passport to make sure it's still valid, and I absolutely cannot wait to head to the airport!!!

Happy to be following along. You are going to love Old Key West. It is most excellent. Perhaps I'm a little biased after over 10 visits there (and owning DVC there). The rooms are the best on site by quite a bit (IMHO) and the laid back feel makes the hectic pace of Disney still seem like a relaxed vacation.

If you are already water taxi fans, you are going to love the boat ride from OKW to Disney Springs. We do it at least two or three times every trip because it is so nice. Make sure to pay a visit to the lounge at OKW, the Gurgling Suitcase. It is a great, mellow, hang out - if Arlene, Ken, or Roberto are working you will definitely be treated right - some of the best bartenders in the World.

Have an awesome trip!

I'm trying to decide between SSR and OKW, and leaning toward the latter based on your praises! :D Plus OKW requires less DVC points.

Thanks for the tips! We'll definitely check out the lounge. And yes, we love the water taxi service! It's the main reason we normally stay at POR so it will be a definite bonus at OKW for us too.

Well, I can't believe it, but the Air Canada sh*t saga continues!!!

We got emails today from Aeroplan saying our departure from Charlottetown on Wednesday was changed from 6am to 1:30pm, through Toronto, meaning we wouldn't get into MCO til 8pm. We would miss nearly a full day at WDW, including our ADR at the Boathouse. Not cool.

Spent and hour on the phone with Air Canada, who blamed Aeroplan for changing our flights. Then spent two hours on the phone with Aeroplan, who said they would not change our flights under any circumstances unless Air Canada cancelled a flight. Turns out they were right. Air Canada cancelled and told me an outright lie. This is the second time they cancelled our outbound flight for this trip.

Thankfully, Aeroplan managed to book us on new flights, leaving Tuesday afternoon, arriving at MCO at 7:30pm Tuesday. This means we'll get to spend all of Wednesday at WDW, which is awesome, but I'll need to use vacation time for Tuesday afternoon. Worth it!

Called WDW reservations and made a separate room-only reservation for Tuesday night at Pop. It'll be our first time staying there, and although we won't be spending much time there at all except for sleeping, we're looking forward to checking it out. Unfortunately they can't get us new WDW luggage tags in time for our departure. The CM said we can go to the MCO "welcome centre" when we land, give them our baggage tags, and they'll get our bags from the airport to Pop. Anybody have experience with that?

We'll also end up with two sets of magic bands, with the first ones likely grey. I hope this doesn't mess up our customized bands waiting when we check in at OKW.

So the countdown is at 7 days and we're getting very excited. Hoping that the flights and luggage situation all work out. If so, it'll be worth all the extra work dealing with Air Canada! We'll check out of Pop Wednesday morning, drop our bags, and then check into OKW sometime in the afternoon after a bit of time at DS.

Tip: avoid Air Canada at all costs!

It's getting close!!! I'm excited to hear how OKW is. We just changed for our March stay from SSR to OKW so I'm curious to hear how you like the room and resort. We really want piece and quiet and would want a fairway view. (Or water view for that matter I guess). Enjoy!!

Following along, fingers crossed that your done & dusted with the flight issues.
You'll love OKW, we stayed there on our last trip in 2014.
We took the in-laws & so booked a two bedroom villa, it was huge, the resort is fantastic & very quiet.
Depending on where you end up the bus service can take 15 - 20 minutes just to get out of the resort but that is the only downside that we experienced.
