Well it's time for another trip report... from Disney Cruise Lines

Where? Disney Fantasy sailing the Eastern Carribean for 7 days
When? Nov 2-9
Who? Me, my wife, and the offspring

I didn't take a ton of photos this time, and the photos I did get I'm not too happy with, so you won't find an overload of photos in this TR.

Prep and Launch
This cruise we booked after our first cruise on the Dream back in Oct 2011. That cruise was a suprise for the family, and while I tried to keep this one a slight suprise, ms flynn caught me at the rebooking desk so that didn't last long :) We moved the date to the first week of Nov to make it a bit more kid friendly (end of marking quarter) so I was a little worried about it being cooler.. but we'll get to that.

With a family of five.. flying adds up quickly. We drove last time, and actually had a breakdown on the ride down that was kind of a downer.. and I had upgraded ms flynn's vehicle to a Suburban since.. which gets even worse gas milage, so I was tempted to rent a van for the better MPG and to save the wear on the truck. But after running the numbers.. the MPG difference wasn't enough to pay for the rental.. so we stuck to driving our own truck.

We are in the DC suburbs.. so its a 13+ hr drive for us. The plan was to drive down the day before (Friday) stay overnight in a hotel, and then head to the port after some Ron Jon shopping (required stop for all!).

Plan was to get on the road by 6:30 to get past DC before most of the morning rush hour. This means packing the night before. Well I've been slammed at work, and so had ms flynn, so we were running behind getting ready. Of course with a 7 night cruise comes 'formal' night, in addition to your semi-formal you have on the shorter cruises. So getting 4 women dressed up for dinner every night takes some NEW shopping of course, and a lot more luggage :) Luckily they had gotten most of the shopping out of the way the week before.. but packing still eluded us. So plan was to do laundry/pack starting Wednesday. Well.. Wednesday night is upon us.. I'm 10 minutes late to run the taxi service to pick up gymnastics car pool, ms flynn is still at work, and my middle one comes running up the stairs 'Dad.. the basement is flooding!!'

Me: Err.. WHAT?!
Child: The water heater is spraying all over!

So I run downstairs, and there is a water spray shooting off the side of the water heater and a huge puddle already. Our basement is unfinished, but is used for storage on that side, and has all my tools and toys down there. So I quickly scramble, shut off the water, send the kids in to start moving stuff out of the flood zone while I go pickup car pool. I get back about an hour later, and find all our christmas stuff had been soaked as well as some other storage stuff. I try to get a plumber out, but can't get one until the morning. So we spend the rest of the night throwing stuff out, lying things out to dry, and sucking up water. So much for packing and laundry!

So next morning, plumber shows up, $400 to replace the expansion tank that failed, and then we can start doing laundry. So ms flynn starts her laundry cycle and gets to packing. I think by 1am we were done packing (all 8+ suitcases) and went to bed.. for our 4am wakeup.

Next morning, Friday, we pack the truck.. thank god we got the bigger truck as it all just fit :) We are a little late getting out of town, due to the mandatory Dunkin Donuts stop so everyone has some breakfast.. but we hit escape velocity and we’re outta there!

The drive
Once we got on the road.. all was well. The forecast called for the massive storms that hit the midwest to hit the 95 corridor.. but we actually had just a little rain as we left DC and then had a dry run the rest of the way! We stop for gas, and bio-breaks/food, but beyond that we drive straight through. I think Arby’s was the lunch for the day, along with gas station snacks to hold us over.

Last time we stayed at the Hampton Inn in Cocoa Beach. Realize with 5 in a room, your options are a bit more restricted.. but the Hampton was pretty good to us last time, but even tho it was on the ocean block, we never got a chance to take advantage of it due to getting there at night, and the early start. So this time I skipped the beach front to save a few dollars and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Cocoa. It’s right off I-95 in Cocoa, so about 15-20mins to the port. The hotel had been renovated and was decent. Had the typical Florida musty smell it seems all hotels have to some degree.. but met the needs, was clean, and was decently priced $104 total.

We got in town about 8:00.. checked in and got a room literaly right next to the lobby. Not too many cars in the lot ;) We had to find some dinner.. so the kids opt’d for Steak N Shake because they are all milkshake fiends :) It worked out well, and we headed to bed after a long day.

Day 1!
The morning started off well, we slept in till about 9, and then headed to our required Ron Jon surfshop stop. Ron Jon is a landmark in Cocoa Beach, and is great for getting those flip flops you need, shorts, cover-ups, etc. After a unnecessary splurge there (tho I did pickup some early x-mas presents) we hit more Dunkin, and headed to the port.

I had debated about parking.. but after @sweetpea_1993 ‘s report, I figured I’d just stick to the port. On pulling in, they check everyone’s ID (don’t remember that last time) and we unloaded with the porters. Heading to parking, I had to hear the spiel over paying $20 more for the ‘preferred parking’ lot. Normally I don’t pay for those types of things.. but being right across from the terminal seemed nice, so I pulled in, and we unloaded.

We went through security and check-in ok. But while the ms had done the online checkin for us, apparently she didn’t finish something right because they didn’t see us as fully checked in. No worries.. we were reconfiguring the charge card anyways. And they must have thought our old photos were good enough.. because they didn’t take any photos. Our boarding time wasn’t till 1:30, but it was basically that time now so we queued up and they had called our boarding group just then.

A bit more of a line to get on the boat this time.. but ms Flynn was intent on filling out one of those photo books this time, so waiting for the boarding picture was mandatory :)

This time around, we had some special requests for the kids in the clubs, so we were told on the phone we would have to speak to the activities director. So we tried to figure out where to go, we were sent to Guest Services, but then were told to just goto the clubs directly.

My youngest was only 10.5, but she did the oceaneers club last time and pretty much outgrew it, and she’s big for her age.. so we wanted to get her into Edge (cut off is 11). The middle child is only 13, but would turn 14 2 days after we get back.. and she’s already in highschool and was ‘over’ Edge last time.. so we wanted to get her in Vibe, but the cutoff is 14.

When we went to Vibe.. it was no problem at all to get her in, all we had to do was sign a waiver.. and they gave the kids new Vibe specific cards to replace their standard cruise cards. They were red and said Vibe.. and they grant them access to open the Vibe club door.. which is normally locked to ‘regular’ folk. After that success, we went to Edge to try for the little one.. and again, no problem at all, just sign the waiver, and she’s in. Score! Ms Flynn sought out the head servers to get our special diet needs in.. and we were all set.

Now.. a lesson learned from the TRs here.. was about the special tours and things like Mixology classes they have on board. So it was a quick run to Guest Services to figure out how to book those.. no problem you find the schedule and signup for all the activities right there at Guest Services (so do that early before the lines get big!). We signed up for a Mixology class ($15/head), and to treat the ms I signed up for the Wine+Chocolate tasting ($30/head) as well.
By now we went to see if our luggage and room were ready and they were. Checking out the view

And yes, to the dismay of the spirit.. the first days after holloween (Nov 2) the ship was already decorated for Christmas

We headed up to the deck for the departure.. but didn’t really check out the deck party.. not my flavor.

I would have waved to the port webcamera.. but I had no idea where it was!

We had a little bit of an escort on the way out of port..

New on this cruise was the app for the Personal Navigator. Disney sent out an email with instructions, and I think they had a paper in the stateroom as well.. but basically they have wifi all over the boat now, and you are free to connect to it and use the app. The wifi is proxied so you don’t get normal internet access for free, but connecting to the wifi itself is free. But you must download the app before you lose internet access!

Getting the app running is easy enough, but you must follow the steps correctly, else the app acts like it is not connected. Just rushing through it, won’t work typically.. so after a few minutes where Dad had to play tech support.. we had everyone’s devices running the app.

Interesting note.. the internet proxy blocks outgoing, but does not block incoming push notifications! So you still get things like facebook notifications, but you can’t open them, follow-up, etc. You can do the usual pay for internet through the shipboard wifi as well.

The app is overall done very well. It offers view of all activities by categories.. and was especially helpful to see the movie listings and character apperances. It was a great way to see ‘when is the next time Mickey is out.. ‘ etc and is leagues ahead of just using the paper navigator. In addition, its far more convenient to have with you all the time vs the paper navigator.

On our cruise, the app did have a few bugs... who can tell me what’s wrong with this photo?
photo-L.png

The issues I had were nominal and didn’t keep me from enjoying the app. It’s a huge benefit. The setup for wifi tho did cause some confusion. I saw more than one family struggling with it at the start of the cruise, including one guy asking me directly for help. His daughter thought she should be getting internet access.. (which she didn’t get for free). Saw him later in the cruise.. he sprung for the paid internet later :)

Before you know it.. it’s time for dinner! Originally my sister in law with her little kids were going to come with us, so we had the early dinner seating.

Which is better?? I think the early seating is a bit early and always ate into our day plans – but the booking agent actually said main dinning is the preferred one that fills up first. Dunno which I prefer.. what’s your input?

Off to dinner (casual night)
DSC_7184-L.jpg

We started in the enchanted garden.. which means we would be there THREE times on this cruise. Lower end of the draw IMO, but was ok.

Surprising (or not) on the Fantasy, not all the light fixtures work in their opening flower mode.. I knew they were problematic on the Dream, but I guess so here as well!

Our servers were Stephenous from Greece, and Mahdai was our assistant server. Now.. I won’t say they were bad, but they were not nearly as on top of their game as our staff was on our last cruise on the Dream. Drinks were slow, not often refilled, and the language barrier was pretty tough. By the third night, I had to say something, and things got better.. but wasn’t the knock out service we had last cruise. However, our Head Server this cruise, was far more engaging and helpful on this cruise, than our last. We had Alberto, and he was great. We saw him every meal, and he helped with our special meals (even sending one to Castaway Cay for me!) and even helped with some drinks when he came by and saw them low ;)

After dinner.. the teenagers were off. We gave them an ambitious 3am curfew this trip.. so we will see how that went.

I can’t recall what we did after dinner.. we weren’t really impressed with the theatre shows last time so in general we didn’t bother with them.

They had a variety show, Wishes, Golden Mickeys, and Aladin, which is a reworked version of the DCA show.

The movie list tho was quite good. We had Planes, Iron Man 3, Monsters University, Thor:Dark World premier, and more. Many of these were offered in 3D as well. I’m pretty sure we watched Monsters University on the first night and then headed for bed.

Remember that 3am curfew? Yeah… offspring #2 blew it on the first night! She rolled in just shy of 3:30.. and I was about 2mins away from going out to find her. Lame excuse offered.. BS detector pegged. She was warned that was her only grace and any more misses would lead to lock down :)

Great start to your TR! What a horrible scare with the water, after that you definitely were in need of a vacation I guess!

Day 2
Today was a pure sea day. On the shorter cruises, there is really only one sea day and it seems like just wasted between site A and B. But on this cruise we had 3 pure sea days.. and I must say I enjoyed them far more than I thought I would.

I don’t have a lot from today.. but it was relaxing :)

We did do the mixology class. Ours was held in Meridian – which is a bar aft right between Remy and Palo. For the smokers, it has a cigar deck which I’m sure makes it popular for some. The bar has a great view directly out the center line of the boat.

The session was about 20 people and we would make 5 drinks. We made one champagne mix, a mohito variant, a martini style drink, a rum drink, and a layered shot. The bartender started out with a history of cocktails for a bit, and then 4 people at a time would go behind the bar and make the example drink and everyone would be served the drink. The drinks were not all full size.. but that wasn’t an issue at all. But finishing off with the coffee flavored Patron tequila + baileys was the bang to cap it all off :)

Here’s a tip.. there often were multiple extra drinks.. If you want to be like a seagull and just hang around looking for scraps.. goto a mixology session and just watch. You’ll pretty much be guaranteed to be offered free drinks :)

Here is our bartender demonstrating his skills. He walked across the bar and back doing this.. he did it with an upside bottle too..

The garland and tree in the atrium..

Weather was kind of a concern given the late date of the trip.. and the weather before we left.. but it was great! I think it was low 80s for the sea days. I know on one of the days they were dodging showers, but we only got spit on a little bit and it didn’t ruin the day at all.

A view of the weather out the pool deck.. love it
IMG_1064-L.jpg

Keeping with the ‘find the other things to do on the boat..’ theme.. I checked out one of the tours of the ship that were in the Navigator. We met in the lobby near the shops and one of the cruise staff lead the ‘tour’. What this tour turned out to be was more an intro to the boat. They explained the navigator, and we walked around decks 3/4/5 to point out where the theaters and kids clubs were. This might be a good activity for someone on the first day of their first cruise.. but anyone who has spent more than a few days on the ship, this would have been all redundant. One good thing that did come out of it.. was they let us know if you wanted a more ‘indepth’ tour of some of the elements of the boat, there was a ‘behind the magic’ tour you could sign up for at Guest Services. So I signed up for that for the next day to see what that one offered.

Being our first full day at sea, it was formal night. One thing that was nice was, it was much more clear on the Disney website about which nights were formal, semi-formal, and pirate night.. something that wasn’t so well done a few years ago.

Heading down in the elevator..
IMG_1072-L.jpg

Fitting.. our rotation had formal night in Royal Court. Both Enchanted Garden and Royal Court are essentially the same as on the Dream (sans name and art shifts I think).

Some dinner shots..
IMG_1069-L.jpg

IMG_1067-L.jpg

Some comments about dining. Disney has specific guidelines for the dining rooms – and directs people to the alternate dining (like Cabanas) if you want something different. Earlier this year Disney loosened the ‘cruise casual’ requirements and allowed shorts. Shoes don’t seem to matter anymore either.

I was disappointed that on Formal night, Disney doesn’t enforce any standards above their ‘cruise casual’. Same applied on Semi-Formal later. I’m not even sure why Disney pushes this attire rotation if they don’t put any meat behind it. Now, Disney does up the ‘formal’ for photos, etc.. and since ms Flynn wanted that photo book this trip.. we of course did lots of photos. Those are all in my book vs digital.. so I don’t have those here. Maybe I’ll scan some later.

One food comment.. look at this plate. This was supposed to be lobster and macaroni.. can you even FIND the lobster?
IMG_1070-L.jpg

Here were some freebies from the earlier day I didn’t include..

Day 3
Another day at sea. In hindsight, I live the extra days at sea.. I found it much more relaxing and at this point we had left home 4 days ago and it felt like 10 days ago.. in a great way! I’m completely sold on the longer cruise with less port days now.

We started the morning with the ‘behind the magic’ tour we signed up for the day before. I was still hoping for more of a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the boat, but instead this was a session about the details behind the décor on the boat.

We started in Meridian, where they pointed out the overall design of the ship, the wallpaper which was actually passport stamps, the design of the chairs, and where the character presence was in that space (each space has some character touch). We continued through several areas of the boat.. including the details behind the sign at The Tube.. the artwork in the stairwells (they are keyed to what you are climbing towards).. the bathrooms in the club district which are the detailed mosaics.. and things you may not know about walking around the ship. Like the staterooms on port side are fish (4 letters like port..) which starboard are seahorses. Also, the carpet in the hallways where you can tell if you are heading forward or aft on the boat. Overall, it was an interesting tour.. not awesome, but a fun introduction for not-so Disney nuts to get an idea of the details Disney puts in, and just some tidbits about the boat design for those who are already Disney nuts.

Looking at our navigator app, there was a session today with a speaker from Disney’s Animation Research Library.

Lella Smith being introduced..
IMG_1075-L.jpg

So I went to check it out. The ARL is separate from the Disney Archives and focuses on material for the animators. But the session showed a lot of drawings of raw animation, character models, etc. The session wasn’t anything mind blowing.. but it was a great addition to the type of activities available on the cruise. And like most other activities, they also had a raffle with some nice books, DCL bag, etc.

IMG_1076-L.jpg

Looking for something to fill out the day, we also decided to try bingo with me and the ms. I was worried about classic Disney being overpriced.. so I was hoping for something like a buck or two a game. As it turns out the pricing looks bad.. but isn’t too bad. Cheap entry was $30 which is 6 tries per game, for 4 games. They also offer electronic handhelds to play bingo which offer more cards, etc. Basically the price range is $30 to $80 where the $80 ‘family pack’ really is enough for 3-4 people to play comfortably.

Bingo is played in the D-Lounge and the cruise staff do their usual antics to try to keep things fun. They mix up the type of combination you need to win each game and have raffles in between games as well. The payouts were pretty good! In the first session the payouts were almost $200 and climbed each game till it was almost $400 if I recall.

Each Bingo session has a bit of a theme or twist and there is a snowball jackpot that builds over the cruise and is paid out during the final session. At the end of the session, they also give you a passphrase if you use at the next session you get free extra cards. One of the sessions they even offered a half-price pre-buy for the next session which is quite lucrative. Camping out for the last 10-15mins of a session may be a good idea even if you aren’t playing that session to hear in on the promo for the next session :)

We enjoyed the session.. and lead to a bit of bingo obsession for the rest of the cruise :)

Some mid report banter..

The Fantasy has some improvements on the forward deck in the Adult area vs the Dream. We really liked the Satellite Falls area of the boat for relaxing..

http://flynnibus.smugmug.com/Vacation/Disney-Cruise-2013/i-gRBFZht/0/L/IMG_1081-L.jpg/img]

If people are curious how crowded the deck is or not during a sea day.. here’s a peak at what it was on day 3. It looks busy, but wasn’t really an issue.

IMG_1078-L.jpg

Now two peeves.. the Fantasy is not much more than a year old so I expect it to be still in great shape. But there were kinks in the armor. Here in the BV theater, you can see damage on the half wall..

IMG_1077-L.jpg

For some reason.. the aquaduck photo never worked the whole cruise and looks like its been down for an extended period given the sign they had on the terminal (yet.. the flash still went off as people went down the ride)

Our stateroom had some grease stains on the wall..

Now I’m not saying the boat was falling apart, but with the impeccable condition we saw the dream in in ’11.. any flaws at all were a bit of a surprise for us. I also found the vibration in the Fantasy pretty significant.. to the point I wondered ‘is something wrong?’. I would not want to be aft given the amount of vibration we felt midship up high.

And lastly.. the adults only area was not enforced to be adults only. Now.. the Concierge section being on Deck 11 there is always kids moving from the area at the front of the area.. to the general area mid-ship. This isn’t necessary, but I can understand Disney allowing it or being soft on enforcement of it. But it doesn’t stop there.. when people actually have their kids in the pool with them and staying with them – that is a blatant violation of the restrictions. I’m pretty sure Deck 12 forward in the quiet pool is supposed to be adult only.. but it wasn’t enforced as such. It's not on the website as such, but I thought the walkways labeled it as such.. I bow to those more knowledgable.

Kids in the pool.. obviously not just passing through
IMG_1080-L.jpg

I’m disappointed that Disney does nothing to enforce their only policies on this matter.

Food on Castaway Cay at Cookie’s continues to be a disappointment as well.

Day 4

Today was our first port day.. A visit to St Martin. Our plans included a beach day tour from the boat.

Pulling into port.. you can see St Martin is quite ‘hilly’ :)

DSC_7202-L.jpg

Our competition in port..
DSC_7206-L.jpg

The big boxy boat on the left was the Norwegian Epic – which pretty much ran the same itinerary we did.

More pretty views..
DSC_7212-L.jpg

Once we were parked.. we had some tight quarters with those other boats you just saw. Check out how close we were parked
DSC_7210-L.jpg

Breakfast at cabana’s..
DSC_7216-L.jpg

Our excursion started with a bus ride to the far side of the island. The island is split between the French, and the Dutch. The port was on the Dutch side. This was a view of the marker identifying the border between the two sides of the island..

IMG_1085-L.jpg

The island was pretty run down along the road we traveled. But eventually we got to the resort where the beach was.

The view of the ocean..
IMG_1087-L.jpg

The beach was fantastic. The waves were upwards of 2-3ft waves most of the time.. the water was a perfect temperature.. and the water was your Caribbean turquoise.

The beach is split into several sections for the various resorts. The section for the excursion was covered in chairs and umbrellas.. tho sitting with an umbrella cost a few more dollars.

IMG_1086-L.jpg

There were warnings that the beach was crowded – it wasn’t for us. Busy, yes, but you were never forced to be on top of each other, etc. Compared to a crowded mid-atlantic resort beach, it was perfectly fine. There were vendors walking around trying to sell island merchandise that were a little annoying after the first hour. They were never pushy, but it was a regular cycle of them coming through.

The excursion included lunch and the restaurant was right there on the beach and open air under cover. We had a choice of chicken, fish, and something else and included fries/rice and a drink. The lunch was quite good.

The little one really wanted to parasail as one of our bookings, but we were not sure if she would be heavy enough so we didn’t book one. But they had water sports rentals on the beach here.. so I looked into parasailing. $60 or $100 for a double. So I booked a ride for the little one and ms Flynn.

DSC_7227-L.jpg

People are shuttled out via jetski to two parasail boats that were making constant loops. One was actually bringing people almost right over the beach and dropping them down low..

DSC_7246-L.jpg

On their trip out the boat.. the boat was not ready yet, so ms Flynn and the young one got a good jet ski ride in as well for probably 10+ minutes with the ski operator before starting their ride.

Taking off..
DSC_7235-L.jpg

Coming back from their ride..
DSC_7257-L.jpg

Overall I think the beach excursion was perfect and well worth it. In theory you could probably have taxi’d over and fought for beach presence on your own.. but it’s a long ride (like 20mins) and the included lunch and ride was nice enough.

Tonight was pirate night. We don’t pack a pirate outfit and I wasn’t interested in watching the show.. so we just camped out for the Fireworks. The fireworks were nice.. I just wish the navigator app was a bit more forthcoming on when the actual fireworks were.. vs the pirate show :/

We watched the fireworks from the starboard side up near currents on Deck 13 which was a great spot as it wasn’t crowded and we had a great view. Get there early enough for the bar and you could even grab some of the seats up there for watching.

Enjoying your report! Yeah, that app...hmmm...let's just have two Sunday's shall we? ;)

Disappointing about the lack of enforcement in the adult areas. It's a hit or miss thing on all the ships...some CMs chase the kiddos out right away, others play the "customer is always right" game. Thankfully we have rarely had a problem, and the one time it was obvious a CM scattered the kiddos away when I said something.

Yup.. I wonder if its a bug related to Daylight savings.. as that was the switch day. (tho we didn't switch on the boat due to the V.I. not switching). The app still showed different things on the days, but it was confusing :)

IMG_1070-L.jpg
Yes, this is a little disappointing. I've gotten that dish before and that's always how it's served. On our first Fantasy cruise, I was very impressed with the size of the lobster portions, compared to what I was used to getting on the classic ships. It seemed to me that the lobster was always a tiny portion (like you received above) on the classic ships. But on the Fantasy, it seemed that the portions were generally better. Except apparently, in this entree. :(

Enjoyed reading about your trip. My husband and I are going on our first Disney Cruise in February doing the same cruise. We are celebrating our 25th anniversary and we are trying to decide what to do in the ports. I would appreciate any suggestions and I look forward to reading more about your trip!

@kimrn87 I did this cruise like Flynn and we did SNUBA in St Maarten and a bus tour. St Thomas we also did a bus/shopping tour. Highly recommend SNUBA.

We were also on this cruise and I am enjoying reading your TR. We had main dining and started in Enchanted Garden also. I was thinking really small world and then I saw your pictures for the Lella Smith presentation and that is my daughter and I in your pictures right in front of you. I guess it is a really small world. I am going to read through the rest of the trip report but wanted to say, Hello and too bad we didn't meet up before as I always enjoy meeting up with fellow forum members.

A belated hello then! :) I couldn't help but think 'who was who' with all those WDWRadio laynards on the boat.. but I don't visit that site so I figured it was hopeless. Maybe next time we need some wdwmagic swag to ID each other :D

I recognized a couple folks with the WDWRadio yellow lanyards but didn't know most as it seemed to be a very large group. I didn't know anything about their group ahead of time as I don't visit that site either. Definitley need some WDWMagic swag. Maybe now that Tammy is coordinating more of these WDWMagic groups cruises, the swag will follow.

Nice report. Great looking family, hope ya'll had fun!

Was wondering about the new nav app...figured DCL would block outgoing messaging...that's why they offer PAID access right? Least you got it up and working. Looking forward to this feature/app on our next DREAM cruise May2014.

Maybe Disney Falcon can comment on the "pool" area that seemed to be for adults but had kids in it? This smaller pool in your pic - is it above the Quiet Cove Deck pool? Do they not have an area marked for adults above 18 only like on the DREAM? Never been on this ship...but the DREAM does not have this smaller pool or the satellite falls area as well with dripping water stuff.

Shame about the damage to the rooms/areas you point out and vibrations you felt. Wonder if it's due to the abuse this ship gets on the longer 7 day trips vs. the other DCL ships? Wondering...

THANKS for the great info!

Interesting report. We enjoyed the days at sea much more than we thought we would, too. We had no problem getting 13 year old son #3 into Vibe, since both of his older brothers (15, 17) were already in.

It's a hassle to pack formal clothes, but you're made to believe you have to do it. Until you get there, of course, and you see the rules are not enforced.
