Trip Report Our Almost One-Year Ago Fantastic Wilderness Lodge Disney Trip! (November 16-23, 2013)

Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new to these boards but I love reading all the trip reports! I thought it may have been a bit late to post about our trip - it was almost a year ago! But I'm still going to post it because it was awesome. :)

Here are the cast of characters - Myself, DH, DS (10), DD (8)

Moving right along with the trip report!

Thursday, 11/21 - Feeling better and ready to be back in business!!!!

I woke up totally recovered and ready to hang out with our friends today! Remember I told you we were meeting up with dear friends for the day who were also at Disney that week AND staying at WL? Well today was our day to spend with them! I was so excited because these are especially close friends of both DH and mine and our kids are very close with their kids. So getting to hang out with them at Disney would be awesome!

We had plans with our friends to go to Magic Kingdom early for Extra Magic Hours, then to head to the Best Friends Lilo and Stitch breakfast at the O’Hana, at the Polynesian hotel. I was looking forward to checking out this character meal – we had been to O’Hana for dinner but never to the Stitch breakfast and my kids LOVE Stitch!!

We headed to Magic Kingdom. Before we met up with our friends we did Space Mountain, then my friend texted and they were at Peter Pan, so we met them outside Peter Pan. We only had a short time before our reservation so we did the Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid ride – this was a new ride in updated Fantasyland and it was really cute. We enjoyed it! We then walked over and did the Barnstormer rollercoaster which is supposed to be a “junior” rollercoaster but it actually goes pretty fast! Very fun! Then we headed onto the monorail to the Polynesian.

It took a while to be seated for our 10:20 a.m. reservation (which was kind of more like brunch!), but once we did sit they started bringing out the food right away, family-style! Mickey waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, and fruit. The food was SO GOOD. I was actually hungry – a very good sign that my health was restored lol! DS was also hungry. It was just so good to be feeling better AND with friends AND at Disney!!! Yay!!

The characters came around – first Lilo (she’s ADORABLE!), then Stitch, then Pluto, then Mickey. Mickey was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt – adorable! I LOVED seeing these characters! DD got her autograph book signed and DS got his Goofy hat signed. All the kids got their Magic Bands signed which was really neat – they will really be precious momentos since the bands just came out this year! At the end of the breakfast the characters led the kids on a parade – everyone got maracas. It was awesome! A high point was our boys doing the parade “Gangnam style” lol. We were all well-fueled and ready for more fun at Magic Kingdom! The breakfast was absolutely wonderful! It is one of my favorite character meals - my favorite is still probably the one at Animal Kingdom (Donald's Safari Breakfast), but this one was awesome too - loved it!!!

We all headed to Frontierland to do Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain – so awesome to do these rides (my favorites!!!) with our good friends! We then did Pirates of the Caribbean and walked through the Swiss Family Treehouse which was neat, and something new to us. We took a break and got some Dole Whip at Aloha Isle – finally my chance to try a Dole Whip! I got a vanilla one and it really just tasted like vanilla soft serve to me. Oh well lol! Next time I will try a pineapple one which I guess is the real deal.

Here are the kids enjoying their Dole Whips and a shot in front of the Castle!

The kids were ready to do Space Mountain - We went on twice! There were no waits for anything which was so awesome! We headed to the Haunted Mansion – DD was nervous but she did it. I actually really love the Haunted Mansion – not creepy or bloody – just “ghostly”. I loved it, very old-time Disney! We watched Mickey’s PhilharMagic which is pretty awesome! Then we did Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel which we also (for some odd reason) had never done but it was really magical. It was about 5:00 at this point and it looked like it was going to start pouring rain. We had plans to go to Epcot that evening so we took a group photo behind Cinderella’s Castle and said goodbye to the Sullivans. We were all truly grateful to have had that time together. We all agreed it was the best day we had had so far! Something about being at Disney with good friends - just makes the experience that much more awesome. Here's our parting shot although DS was hiding behind his friend lol:

1238.JPG

We got on the monorail to head over to Epcot for the evening and I called Disney Dining Reservations to cancel our reservation at 50s Primetime Café since we had decided on going to Epcot instead (we had gone to Hollywood Studios the night before, and were planning to return the next day). They said they would charge me a $10 per person fee to cancel – I knew this was protocol but was hoping they’d let us slide. Oh well. We kept the reservation because I didn’t want to be charged $40 for a dinner we weren’t going to be eating. So we headed to Hollywood Studios. Normally we stick to a plan which is loosely based around our dining reservations, but with the sickness, we had to switch things around. I was hoping to get another day at Epcot but it was all good. We would do HS again.

DS and I went on Star Tours twice – I loved it and even got to be the Rebel Spy!!! Very cool ride – one of DS's favorites! DD didn’t want to do Star Tours so she and DH caught the Indiana Jones show. Then we met at 50s Primetime. The last time we ate there I got the Pot Roast and it was really good. This time I got the chicken pot pie and it was a bit dry, only so-so. Next time I’ll get the pot roast again! We love the atmosphere there although this time we did not have our own “kitchen island” with a TV. Our waiter this time was very nice, not terribly into the antics like our previous waitress had been. I could not eat the huge dessert I had gotten – a brownie sundae!

Here are the kids at 50s Primetime:

DH and DS did Rock n’ Roller coaster while DD and I did the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show which I did not realize was a live show with Ariel and Eric! DD and I both loved it! It was truly magical to see the REAL Ariel and Eric and to see my little girl’s eyes sparkle while she watched this wonderful show. She turned to me and said it’s the REAL ARIEL AND ERIC! Total magical moment between the two of us which I will never forget. THIS is why we go to Disney. Worth every penny for moments like this. There was only a 30 minute wait for Toy Story Midway Mania so we waited and we just LOVE this ride! So fun!

DH and DS did the great Movie Ride while we did Toy Story because we had kind of separated after dinner so they could do the roller coaster. They called it the “Not so Great Movie Ride” lol. We headed home. What a fantastic day!

Tomorrow is our last full day at Disney.... :-(

Very beautiful photos! What a gorgeous resort. It just oozes Christmas! So glad that you had a wonderful last full day at Disney. Ariel is my most favourite princess and I absolutely adore the live show at HS. My youngest, who is also a big Ariel fan, was jumping in her seat and elated when she first watched it when she was 3 and still reacted the same way when she was 7.

So glad that your illnesses were short-lived. I have also been ill at Disney and while I'd rather be sick there than not there at all...it still takes away a little :) Your pictures of the Wilderness Lodge totally make me want to stay there!

This is so true! Rather be there sick than not at all. We still managed to have an amazing trip!

I have a great story to tell about the tree going up during that trip... It is so magical seeing it in the lobby! Looks like you're going next month? I envy you! Hope you have an awesome trip!!
Thank you! Yes, Nov 12-18th!! 33 days and I can't believe its almost here!
Would you say it was crowded last year? It doesn't seem it from your report but the crowds right now seem crazy!!!

It was not AT ALL crowded! We only used one fastpass the entire time - for Toy Story in HS - we had scheduled fastpasses for each day and did not end up needing to use them. The longest wait posted the entire time was 20 minutes and that was for Test Track, but it only took maybe 10 minutes at most. Have a GREAT time!!!

That is awesome! I actually remember my Mom telling me the same thing. They didn't need any of their FP's and had to actually beg a CM to use their fp's for a ride at one point.. Haha! she was so excited to scan her band at the line and did 't need to lol.

Friday, 11/22/13 - Day 7 - Our last full day. Sniff Sniff! :-(

Today I woke up feeling that dreaded feeling of it being our last full day. We had overcome the terrible stomach bugs, but with this unexpected sickness for DS and I, I just didn’t feel ready to leave. Today was our day to play "catch up" on all the things we missed because of having to rearrange everything due to our sick days. I wanted a pool/relaxation day, but that was not going to happen on this trip. We were "getting it done!" lol!

We got breakfast at Roaring Fork and headed to Animal Kingdom – DS wanted to do Expedition Everest and had missed going to Animal Kingdom on Tuesday so our plan for the day was to do a little park hopping to do some things he missed. While DS and DH went on Everest DD and I wanted to do something quick (she had no interest in Everest) so we decided to try Rafiki’s Planet Watch. I didn’t know what to expect, but basically you get on a safari train (the Wildlife Express Train) for a ride to a section called Rafiki’s Planet Watch. It is literally a few monkeys and a very pathetic petting zoo. There was the Conservation Station where they make the food for the animals, and we did get to meet Rafiki himself.

DD wanted to check out the Wilderness Explorers, too. We didn’t have much time and it seemed like such a waste of time. We should have done the Safari instead with all the time we spent there – we had to wait a while for the train each way. To me, Animal Kingdom is just “ok” and Rafiki’s Planet Watch is something I don’t need to revisit next time.

We met up with DS and DH to get the bus to Hollywood Studios – literally felt like we waited 45 minutes. Ugh! I know we went to HS before but we didn't really spend an entire day there, and wanted to do a few more things. And we just love HS! And again, it is DS's favorite park and we still felt SO BAD that he had to lay in bed sick for 2 days in Disney. :-( DD is always game for everything. Plus, we had done a full day at Epcot and felt like we got to do everything there that we needed to do, so this was good.

DD and I headed to Toy Story right way – we got there too late to get a paper Fastpass (since, at the time, we could do both Fastpass + AND the old system of Fastpasses) and had to wait 45 minutes to get on. DH and DS were doing Tower of Terror and Rock n’ Rollercoaster again. They ended up doing Toy Story afterwards and of course had a long wait, too. We then all met up at the ABC Commissary – a GREAT counter service place and the ONLY counter service place where we did not have a long line. SCORE!
Here's the beautiful and delicious cupcake I got, although I'm always too full from the big counter service meals to eat much dessert!

1256.JPG

We got cheeseburgers and they were yummy. Will definitely go back to this place! After lunch DD and I headed over to meet Sofia the First – her favorite Disney princess! The wait was not terrible, and she was so adorable!

1258.JPG

Then we saw Muppet Vision 3D which we all love so much! We headed to Rock n’ Rollercoaster to use the Fastpasses. I went on with DS first – wow! My first time and it was so fast but I really loved it! DD didn’t want to ride so DH then went on a second time with DS. I was so happy we could “make up for lost time" here at HS another day!

After that, we did some shopping with the kids since they had giftcards they wanted to spend and this was our last full day at Disney. DD got Sofia the First figures. DS got a Rock n’ Rollercoaster shirt. We needed to head back to Magic Kingdom because we had one last dinner reservation – this time at Crystal Palace which I was really excited to check out. :)

So as we headed into Magic Kingdom it hit me that I don't think we ever got any Photopass pictures taken and I wanted one really good family picture for our Christmas card, so I told everyone they had to be on their very best picture behavior because Mommy was getting a really GOOD Disney picture in front of the castle and it better be good... or else!!! :)

The sky was really cool - it was going to be sunset soon and there was a really neat swirl of clouds and sun, so it was a great opportunity for a picture. Here's the one we ended up with, I was thrilled with it!!!

paulingfamilypic.jpeg

I love the Christmas wreaths hanging over the street. Awesome!

We only had a short time before we needed to get to Crystal Palace for our very last Disney dinner. Boo.
We only had time to do one quick ride – of course, we wanted to do Space Mountain but there was not enough time. We did Stitch’s Great Escape which is NOT our favorite ride but the only one we could squeeze in. Oh well. We noticed things were getting really crowded in all 3 parks we visited that day – it was the Friday before Thanksgiving. We were glad we had most of the week before the heavy crowds came that weekend!

We made it to Crystal Palace for our 6 pm reservation. Here's a pic while we were waiting outside to be called in... it's such a pretty view of the castle!

1270.JPG

The dinner was a buffet. Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet came to the tables. DD was in Heaven –she LOVES these characters! The restaurant was beautiful – all decorated for Christmas and so pretty! I felt very bittersweet because I wanted to enjoy the meal but was very sad to leave the next day.

We did our usual “How do you feel about having to leave tomorrow?” frown faces for our last pictures of the week. How do you feel about leaving Disney tomorrow?

The meal , food-wise, wasn’t fantastic but we loved the characters and the setting. I’d try breakfast here, though. We left the restaurant and the Very Mickey Christmas Party was going on – we didn’t have tickets but very well could have stayed for the parade, however we decided to just go back to the hotel. I could totally feel the crowds were very heavy at that point, you could barely walk. It was neat because there was fake snow falling on Main Street and that was very magical.

We decided to go back and pack, and DH took the kids to the arcade at the hotel. My parents had left them each a $10 giftcard for the arcade at the front desk before they left – well apparently the cast member at the desk did not feel that $10 would “cut it” so she added $40 to EACH GIFTCARD – giving each of my kids $50 to spend at the arcade. Amazing. They played in the arcade for quite a while and they still have money on those cards to save for the next trip! They had some more Disney giftcard money to spend so we went to the hotel gift shop for what seemed like a loooong time for DD to decide. I bought a Wilderness Lodge mug which I use just about every time I drink coffee lol. I LOVE that mug, it’s like one of those very heavy campy time ceramic mugs. My very favorite. We went to bed a bit sad knowing we were leaving to go home the next day. :-(

Last day. :-(
SATURDAY, 11/23
– We woke up and ate at Roaring Fork. Pretty leisurely because we weren’t needing to get onto Magical Express until about 10 am. I took some pictures while DH waited for the bus with the kids. I walked everywhere and got pool, lobby, etc. pictures. The luggage guys outside took some family pictures and they came out great lol! Probably the second best picture taken throughout the trip - the best being the Photopass one lol! It's the pic I pasted at the top of this post.

Here's a few other shots of the kids in the lobby before we left:

We got to the airport, had McDonalds lunch, then left. Came home to 25 degree weather in Connecticut. NOT FUN. I need to retire in Florida.

What we learned on this trip –
-the week before Thanksgiving is the BEST week to go
-wear facemasks on the plane ride next time to try to avoid illness
-Schedule relaxation time or a down day – we love the parks but need to relax, too. The slower week makes it possible to do this without missing out on all our favorite rides and attractions.
-We ended up getting 4 parkhopper passes for the days DH and DS missed going to the parks due to being sick – that was pretty awesome. The passes are good for 20 years. I would not have gotten them if I had not called Disney and asked, following our trip. Remember the awesome customer service and that they typically want to make things right and offer opportunities for us to come back!!!
-Don’t necessarily feel we need parkhopper passes – we got them both trips and only park hopped once this trip. Make a plan to do a different park each visit. That said, I was glad I had done the parkhopper this trip because of the sickness and having to rearrange things last minute. Usually we are way more organized and have a set plan to do only one park each day.
-Also, I wish we had done more parades and fireworks this time. Last trip we did the fireworks at Magic Kingdom and Epcot and did Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios. This time around it was more about the rides. I love the fireworks and would have loved to have done Wishes at Magic Kingdom in addition to seeing the fireworks from California Grill.

Thanks for reading my trip report - it felt good to write it - it was like therapy for me since we're not going to Disney this year and it was this time last year we were so busy planning. Hope you enjoyed it!
