We live ten minutes away from the former SeaWorld Ohio\Geauga Lake and were there all the time growing up.
Same here! I think I grew up very close to where you live.
So yeah, used to be Geauga Lake/Sea World/Six Flags in Ohio for me. I got summer passes to Sea World and Geauga Lake multiple years. Also used to go to Cedar Point once every summer. I went back to CP a couple of years ago and the lines were INSANE so we only got on a few rides.
Really... SeaWorld in Ohio? i did not know that. Do you know why it shut down?
They (and Geauga Lake) were bought by Six Flags who ran it into the ground and after only three years it closed. The only thing left there is a small water park.
Had to look this up on Wikipedia (so you know it's accurate!
) because I couldn't remember the dates...
- Opened in 1970
- Never had any rides (I was shocked to hear that Sea World in Orlando has roller coasters!)...apparently this is because they had an agreement with Geauga Lake (right across the lake from Sea World) not to compete.
- Was owned by Anheuser-Busch for awhile (I distinctly remember this because I worked at Sea World and they had the Clydesdales appear in the park)
- Bought by Six Flags in 2001, combined with Geauga Lake to create Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, upped their water park portion of the park (I lifeguarded there the summer before college, most terrifying job EVER)
- Six Flags bought by Cedar Point in 2004...which is when all of the Sea World Stuff was transferred out for good
- Geauga Lake area closed in 2007...the water park stuff is still there as

Honestly, I'm surprised they ever had a Sea World in Ohio. We get mean winters here, so it was open, what, late spring to early fall? So they'd have to move all of the animals when the weather got too cold, I guess. Seemed like a bad idea from the start.
I'm guessing that plus the lack of rides was the downfall. (Though I do have many fond memories from both Sea World and Geauga Lake.)
