Other Holidays

There have been a few threads lately about Thanksgiving, and most recently, Christmas. What about other holidays? Does anyone have special thoughts about Hannukah, Kwanza, or any other holidays/special winter occasions? What about little things like first snow or ice pond freezing...things like that. Anything that makes a certain winter day special.

I, and other Floridians can relate to hard freeze nights! We all run around like crazy covering plants and bushes, running outdoor faucets so the pipes won't freeze, setting up heaters for our outdoor pets, etc.

My mom has a special soup she makes for the first snowfall-- "Snow Soup" (no snow added, though) to mark the occasion. I love it because it's a warm comfort food. :)

I hate snow, but now that I teach, snow days are welcome! I dance around the house on days I don't have to go to school--thus putting an abrupt end to any hope of sleeping late!

I love watching the dog play in the snow, too.... Harley is kind of low to the ground, so she's always a little startled by how cold it is on her belly.... And her long springer spaniel hair gets big snowballs frozen to it that are difficult to melt out!

When I was younger, we lived a few houses from the lake, and I remember waiting for it to be cold enough to ice skate.... Dad would go down with his saw and cut a small hole to check the thickness before we could go on it.... There was a smaller lake our lake flowed into that would freeze first, and sometimes we would go there and there would be a big bonfire in a metal can....

Mostly I stay in and watch hockey! :) THAT's what gets me through the season (and yes, I'm well aware that I could move to Florida and not lose a hockey team).

Well..seeing how my parents raised me as a Neutral (no chosen religeon)...yes..that makes me an Atheist...That doesn't mean however that I am AGAINST relegion and its holidays...I feel whatever makes someone feel good is great for them...for me personally..around this time of year...I always think back to my days in NY, and walking into FAO Shwartz (Yes I know we have them in Florida too...but it's no where NEAR the same) and seeing all the cool new stuff they brought out for the holidays. To this day I still make an effort to go into a toy store right before christmas and see the new toys and play a bit (22 years old....still young enough to not be embarassed to say "COOL! at the new toys aimed for 12 year olds)...

So for me its not the holiday itself..but the vibe I get from everyone else...
