Deadline reports a new Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series is in the works at Disney+, with Jon Favreau writing and producing the project:

"Over the last decade, Jon Favreau has been a linchpin of Disney+‘s original series slate with flagship The Mandalorian and its offshoots while also taking on classic Disney animated characters on the feature side with the live-action/photorealistically animated The Jungle Book and the photorealistically animated The Lion King. Now he is combining the two with a new series in development at Disney+, Deadline has learned.

The animation/live action hybrid is about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a saucy, self-absorbed bunny. Favreau is writing and producing the project from Walt Disney Studios.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is very important to the Walt Disney Company. The cartoon, which bears close resemblance to Mickey Mouse, has a fractured history with the company and played a pivotal role in the creation of Disney’s most famous animated character. Oswald was created in 1927 by Walt Disney and featured in 27 animated shorts. But after Universal took control of the character in 1928, Disney created a new character as a replacement: Mickey Mouse.

Bringing Oswald home had been a priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger, and The Walt Disney Co. acquired the trademark in 2006."

The idea of a live-action/CGI TV Series reminds me of the "Tooned Out" series HBO MAX announced back in 2019. It was planned as a launch title but got delayed during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

He's my initial reaction to the news of Oswald finally getting his own show that's been rumors for almost 10 years now.

Do you mean Tooned Out? I believe it got cancelled as part of the shake up regarding WB offloading some Looney Tunes content, like the upcoming movie "The Day the Earth Blew Up" which WB isn't distributing anymore but rather is being distributed by Ketchup Entertainment.

I'm surprised they're doing another attempt at an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit show seeing as the last time they tried to do one, they canceled it. I'm guessing this'll come out in 2027 as that's Oswald's 100th birthday that year (and maybe an Epic Mickey 2 Rebrushed or Epic Mickey 3 as well pretty please Disney?)

I hope they release the second one on the switch. I’ve only played the first.

“Bringing Oswald home had been a priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger, and The Walt Disney Co. acquired the trademark in 2006.”

Some priority, twenty years later they’re gonna do something with this? Bewildering use of money in 2025.

Epic Mickey 1 and 2. Appears in Disneyland a lot. Old shorts are on Disney+. Cameos in multiple Mickey shorts. Appeared on most of the 100th anniversary merchandise. appeared in once upon a studio. And had a brand new cartoon made for the 100th anniversary.

I mean, they've done stuff with him like the Epic Mickey games (which is why Disney even wanted to get the rights to him anyways), cameos in some of the Mickey Mouse shorts, and a store in DCA. The only reason he's not used that much is that he doesn't have that popularity Mickey Mouse or his friends, hell, when Disney bought him back in 2006, most of Oswald's shorts that Walt Disney produced were lost and some still are as of today. So It's not too much of a surprise they haven't used his too much.

Dear Disney+,
Please do not announce this to then cancel it like you did to Tiana.
I'm going to cry if they cancel this lol. (unless the show is going to be bad, then not really)

Live action hybrid, so I'm going to put money down on the "meta references in place of actual humor" category.

Potentially another avenue for just constant references to themselves masquerading as "entertainment".

Dear Disney+,
Please don't announce a Oswald series and retool it into a Disney+ special or a movie for the theaters like Moana and Tiana. ;)
Wait, why wouldn't you want a Oswald movie?

Also last I checked the Moana series to movie sequel worked out to the tune of $1.05B, so I don't know why they wouldn't do more of that, only makes financial sense.

Well I cant argue, the retool of Moana to a movie was smart for them to do, and as I did got Moana, I can wait for the Oswald movie, if it it was to be retooled, to go on Disney+ for "free".

I guess anything is better than total cancellation.
