This thread makes me sad. I miss Disney MGM Studios.....and Residential Street. Unfortunately, my family only ever visited WDW during the summer, so I was not exposed to anything Christmas until just a few years ago. It would have been awesome to see Osborne Lights on Residential Street.
Sorry you did not get to see it. It was indeed awesome.

We loved walking through the lights on Residential Street. My favorite memory of walking through the lights on Residential Street was early January 2005, the last night of the lights for that season. My now 26 year old DS was a high school senior and had just completed his first Disney Half-Marathon, after recovering from a year of physical therapy following knee surgery due to a leg sweep in wrestling. Anyway, it was just the two of us and we talked the whole time through about his future plans and dreams. It was a great mother-son moment.

Thanks for the pics. Every year I stand on the Streets of America and wish I could still walk through Residential Street…wish I had that old HS guide also. Thanks for this topic.
Did I read online this was the last year for Osborne Lights? Is that just temporary due to construction???

I remember Residential Street but I never realized Osborne Lights were ever there! I guess that is what happens when you only go to WDW during Spring Break and the summer.
Since I never saw the Osborne lights on Residential Street, I will have to be very excited about it on Streets of America when I see it in 26 days!!!! Getting SOOO excited about seeing WDW all decked out in Christmas attire!

As I was looking at the pictures and the video, I was thinking the same thing. I miss residential street also. Sometimes I feel like, WDW stop screwing things up here.:banghead: But I guess as we see, things will continue to change. Disney Studios to me has no identitay anymore as well as Epcot. Sorry, just ranting and remembering..........:(:arghh:

Yes, it was discussed in another thread that due to the construction of the Star Wars expansion, Streets of America would be either temporarily or permanently unavailable for the lights. But, since that discussion, it's unclear what exactly is happening in that area, and when it happening. So, I guess until they officially announce what the construction area is, when it will start, and what attractions/events will be affected, we're in a wait-and-see mode. It IS possible that this would be the last year for them, at least for a while.

I used to visit WDW in the early-mid 90's until I took a hiatus from visiting again until 2010. I had wondered why my memories of the lights were considerably different from what I was seeing now, turns out they used to be in a different (and apparently larger and more spread out) location. In particular, the trees were something I remembered being decorated from the old location that were largely absent from the new location.

I'd say while the lights themselves have improved in tech as well as the way they can be made to flash to the music, the old Residents Street area seems to have been a much better location. The Streets of America seems smaller and more compact (and i'm not sure whether this is true or not but this is how it feels), and I miss the decorated trees. Also the charm of it being a residential street as opposed to a more urban setting. I think it was the tree lights that I remember and miss most about the old area. The lights are still great, they could do with a new and better area however with more trees to work with.

I still can't figure out what they're going to do about the Osborne Lights once they start construction at DHS for Star Wars or whatever they're planning. Supposedly the Streets of America was under consideration for demolition in one variant of the plan (which may or may not still be true), but no one has said anything more about it for some time now. If they do get rid of the area, they had better keep the lights themselves and find a suitable new location, losing them would be an absolutely devastating blow to WDW's Christmas offerings. And there have already been enough reductions in decorations elsewhere such as EPCOT, losing the Osborne lights would rip a huge amount of heart out of the holiday offerings at WDW.

I remember seeing the lights on Residential Street in the mid to late 90's and then when they moved in the 2000's. There isn't a comparison. The residential street set up was soooo much better. Like someone said before, it felt like you were walking through some random neighborhood. I haven't seen them in probably 10 years but the last time they were so cramped together that they overlapped and you lose a lot I think.

The missus and I are going this week and we'll be stopping by MGM to see the lights this year. We can't wait to see what changes have been made.
