We are leaving tonight from Pennsylvania and we should hit the Florida state line around 10am Saturday and we were wondering what the local Orlando weather forecasters were saying about Dennis. Thanks for your help!

2005 Storm Names

As of 11:00 a.m. ET, Dennis' maximum sustained winds increased to 150 mph, making it a very dangerous Category 4 major hurricane. The hurricane's pressure dropped sharply earlier in the morning, prompting the intensification. Remember, a Category 5 hurricane has sustained winds greater then 155 mph so Dennis is indeed a very strong Category 4. Hurricane Dennis made a brief landfall near Cabo Cruz, Cuba on Thursday evening. The eye will make a second landfall on the south-central coast of Cuba this afternoon, move across western Cuba and finally emerge into the Gulf early Saturday.

A hurricane warning is in effect for eastern and central Cuba (including the city of Havana). A hurricane watch is posted for the western tip of Cuba and the Isle of Youth. The hurricane warning has been dropped for the Cayman Islands, but a tropical storm warning is now in effect for Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Island.

In the U.S., a hurricane warning is in effect for the lower Florida Keys from the Seven Mile Bridge westward to the Dry Tortugas. A tropical storm warning and hurricane watch have been issued for the remainder of the Florida Keys east of the Seven Mile Bridge to Ocean Reef and Florida Bay. A tropical storm warning is also in effect from Bonita Beach, Fla. along the Gulf and down around eastward to Golden Beach, Fla. along the Atlantic. A tropical storm watch has been posted from Longboat Key, Fla. to Bonita Beach, Fla.

Look for heavy 5-to-15-inch rains and destructive winds to continue pounding Cuba. The Cayman Islands and Jamaica could pick up an additional 4 to 8 inches of rain. Mudslides and flooding are likely. The winds will gradually increase over southernmost Florida and the outer rain bands could produce 4-to-8-inch totals by Saturday.

Although the trek across Cuba may blunt the hurricane's strength, Dennis will still be a dangerous hurricane plowing NNW through the eastern Gulf of Mexico toward the northern Gulf Coast this weekend. All interests along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the west coast of Florida should monitor the progress of Dennis very carefully. Four Atlantic weather systems -- Arlene, Bret, Cindy and Dennis -- reached Tropical Storm status by July 5, the earliest for so many named storms in recorded history. Only three major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) have hit the U.S. coast in July in the past 100 years.

It's looking like central FL won't have anything major. You probably won't be able to tell that there is a hurricane off the coast. Probably some rain, and some wind for some parts of some day, but thats it. I hope ;)

As long as the storm stays on its projected path.

"What that means for us is that we do expect to see some scattered showers and thunderstorms off and on through the course of the weekend," Mowry said. "Some of the storms could be very strong and produce isolated tornadoes. We also expect gusts ranging from 20 to 30 mph and rough seas."
