Orlando is the Nation's 25th most dangerous city

Interesting. Orlando is #347 on the list of safe cities. Anaheim is #135, with a bunch of other Orange County cities surrounding Disneyland much higher up on the safe list. Quite a few cities in the Top 50 Safe Cities are in Orange County, California in fact.

I've always felt extremely safe in Orange County, California. If you drive 20 minutes up the freeway from Disneyland and into Los Angeles County you start finding some scary places though. The few times I've been to Orlando proper or WDW I never felt unsafe, although if you drive off Disney property you can clearly tell that it is not an affluent area of the country and that there are quite a few rather seedy looking characters milling around. Judging from the standard of living in Central Florida, I'm not surprised that Orlando fell as low as it did on this national list. But I think Disney does a very fine job of keeping it all tucked away from tourist view.

Thankfully not, but a large majority of WDW visitors due pass through Orlando in some way. It's good to be aware of your surroundings and the dangers they may hold.
I'm sorry but I don't see how it is any more dangerous to pass through through Orlando on my way to WDW than it would be passing through Jacksonville. It's all a matter of having safe traveling practices. Now if I became a resident of Orlando, I would see your point for then my chances of being affected by crime would be greater. But since WDW isn't in Orlando but in Lake Buena Vista, I would call Orlando's status as one of the nation's most dangerous cities irrelevant to the travel to WDW.

There are two very different sides of Orlando/Orlando area. I live in the more upscale developement near Disney on the Orlando side. Once you cross into Kissimme, it is a very bad area. Also bad is the area occupying the space between where i am and where downtown Orlando is.

Now now... I live in the countryside of Kissimmee and your post is misleading. All of central florida is a mishmash of upscale, medium scale, and low scale... you can drive 5 minutes from an upscale and be in a total skid row. Disney's Celebration is in Osceola, on the outskirts of Kissimmee. So, please don't be so broad with your brush.

There is a $1.50 public bus from the heart of downtown Orlando to the TTC and back, every half hour during the day. It's odd to think that anyone could get on that bus so easily and just be right near the Magic Kingdom, walking distance from the Polynesian. Sadly, I once saw a very tattered homeless woman get off of that bus and just sit down at one of the tables in TTC, with a shopping cart, etc.

I'm talking about the Lynx (Orlando public transportation bus system) ROUTE 50 (not 56, which also stops there). If you pay $1.50, you can get on it (make sure it's one one going to downtown, NOT Disney University) and it will take you into the middle of downtown... you can even get a transfer to get back free. Not that this is worth doing, but just intersting to note.

Check out the neighborhood the "O-rena", home of the NBA's Orlando Magic, is in. It's not a nice place. I chaperoned a school trip to Florida a couple of years ago and from the bus (during a traffic jam) we witnessed an arrest and what looked to be an illegal "deal" taking place. I'll stick to the comfy, safe confines of WDW :)

The actual City of Orlando isn't a very nice place. The sheltered Disney World part is very nice though.
Errr... what about Windermere, where I live? Or Winter Park? Or Thornton Park?

Orlando is like any other city. It has good areas, it has bad areas. If you're smart, you know what parts to avoid.

True... I think the bad areas are growing very fast though. Way faster than anyone would expect from the size of a town like Orlando anyway. Plus there is all this upscale development being forced into the ghetto over at Millenia. That's a disaster waiting to happen. The same developer that built that mall pulled the same stunt with Streets of Southpoint in Durham, NC. For a while the California Pizza Kitchen there had bullet holes in the side of it after a drug deal went bad.

Disney is pretty insulated from most of the crime filled regions of Orlando. Can't say the same about some of the other developments on the north end of I-drive though. Anyone wanna join me for a date in the Jurassic Park garage? :)

Hey St.Louis made #1 in two things this weekend..baseball and most dangerous city....Detroit made it to #2 in two things this weekend...baseball and 2nd most Dangerous city...we are nothing if not consistent!
Ok, as the mother of two young girls..and girl scout leader to two different troops..I never feel in danger in St.Louis...not even when a train broke down and we got stuck in a seedy area on the "east side"...one mom was having a break down..but nothing bad happened..like others have said you just need to know your areas and keep your head about you. Most crimes are commited by people against people they know and have issues with.
My aunt and uncle lived across the street from Paula Sims, now that was dangerous...in case any of you do not know who she is, she was one of the first moms to kill her babies.(about 20 years ago)...yep she chopped one of them up and put her in a garbage bag and put her in the deep freeze...so perhaps the biggest dangers can be right in our own neighborhood.
