Original Land pavilion concept

It's probally been mentioned before, but I never heard ii in such detail. Here is part of the article straight from Tony Baxter.

"What did contain The Land pavilion you designed contain ?

The building was designed as a series of very large glass crystals that contained each of the different habitats of the earth - from the frozen environments of the high mountains to the low-lying deserts and swamps . And each one told the story of how we must decide whether to preserve or develop the various assets of the land. Two of the crystals were developed into agricultural and urban environments, and the other five were natural environments. We sort of followed the story of water which comes down from the sky to the mountains and eventually dries up in the desert.
Was it an attraction with Audio-Animatronics ?

Some of it. We had three parts. The first part was a theatre with some AA figures, and the second part was a ride on a balloon, a little Peter Pan-like ride-through of a Disney nature story. It was called The Blueprints of Nature. The blueprints unfolded in the snowflakes of winter, then the germinating seeds of springtime, the flowers of summer, and the leaves of the fall. As we observed this never-ending cycle, the balloon soared upward with the flying eagle. "For man alone can learn from nature and can soar with the birds". The ride concluded by flying through all the crystals. When you looked down, you got an overview of the area you would soon be visiting on foot, which was the third part of the show.
But that concept was designed for a lumbering company, and when Kraft Foods signed on as the sponsors, they wanted to tell the story of farming and food production, so everything changed. And the rest is history."

Pretty interesting huh?

Interesting article.

I love The Land... I remember the hot air balloons from when I was there 20 years ago when I was 4!

Thanks for posting it!

Hey marni, what are the other pavillions in that model if you know? the obvious ones are SSE, UOE, communicore(maybe different name at the time?) and probally WOM. Especially the one that looks more like the current incarnation of the land with the glass volcano.

The Land is my favorite pavillion. The hydroponics are great. I learned more there than I ever did in any science class.

Well it looks like Soarin is the modern version of that Baloon ride. Maybe when the original film gets added it will be of the story intended for The Land.

Dang that balloon type ride sounds too cool These are the exact type of rides Epcot needs. Different, semi educational, interesting, but that still have a "cool/different" factor.

I rode in a hot air balloon for the 1st time in 2002. I'd defintely reccomend it to anyone. It was so placid and serene, you didn't even feel like you were moving

At a guess, I`d say the top pavillion was an early Motion pavillion - UoE is at the bottom. Here is the whole model - clockwise we have Spaceship Earth, UoE, The Land, Motion, The American Adventure (I kid you not!), Imagination, The Seas and Century 3 (Horizons). And of course, Communicore in the middle.

Two questions. First, what's the deal with the geyser in the back, if you know. And second, I'm a little suprized a space pallion isn't part of this plan, did it just come into play later?

I actually don't like that old design.

I think it's kinda nifty personally. The future world looks more like a futuristic city than the current one does, like straight out of logan's run or something. And I like the use of a pavillion in the center like that, even if it is American Adventure. Wonder how hard it would be to put something in that spot now, like my idea for a dark ride about the various forms of exploration throughout history. And thanks to Marni for the great pic. It's nice to see clearly and in color.

No idea about the guyser in the back, but I always considered Horizons as the "space" pavillion at Epcot back in the day. Back when that model was created, it was under the working title of Century 3. But then obviously they changed the name to Horizons.

And if anyone was wondering about American Adventure int he middle like that... in that model, The US was the "host country" to the others in World Showcase, so it kind of made sense to have it designed like how it is in that model.

aimster is right - The American Adventure was originally planned to be at the entrance to World Showcase. On legs of all things - you would walk under the pavillion to enter WS. The fountain at the back was a central balancing act - no country should take this central position. On reflection, it was decided to be too `cocky` to have America at the `entrance to the world`, and for guests to have to walk below it (as opposed to on an equal level), so AA (as aimster said - the host) was moved to the other prominent position, where it is now.

I would presume from the look of the model that it is from 1979.When you think about the conception of EPCOT as a theme park its interesting to see alot of the models and ideas they went through before the final design was presented.I like the buildings we have today, its just to bad we dont have some of the original ideas for rides such as The Land idea.

I dont like having America in that postion. We should be where we are now. I think it would be putting America in a different light when compared to the other countries.

I don't like the American pavilion being at the foot of future world for two reasons - 1) it blocks the view of World Showcase, really isolating it. I like being able to look across (and look back at Spaceship Earth as a whole symbol for the park from World Showcase). I also think it puts America too much into Future World, where it really should be part of World Showcase.

I like that model - interesting the changes. Looks like they thought they were going to need a lot of drainage room for water, although I wonder if the model may have been designed with other locations in mind. It also looks like World Showcase was a bit smaller then. Was imagination designed back then? I or some reason thought it was kind of a last minute type of addition.
