Opinions on Fort Wilderness?

Hey, me & my family just booked a great vacation from 8/8 to 8/15 down to Disney and we're staying at the cabins at Fort Wilderness. Can anyone give us some tips, reports, and first hand accounts on how this resort is, how the cabins are, how the amenities (bad spelling?) are, and how the transportation is!

Thanks! Sorry about all the questions, but this will be my first time staying at Fort Wilderness and I really want to get a good idea about the place before I head there! :)

Fort Wilderness has always been one of my favorites, I used to stay there as a kid all the time. On our last visit to the world we took the boat over from the Magic Kingdom to just walk around a little and show it to my wife and kids(3 and 6). We went to the petting zoo and the kids rode the ponies. I love the hotels, but everything just seems a little more laid back at Fort Wilderness and I can't think of much that beats the boat ride to the MK. The campfire was always fun too. I would love to hear what everyone has to say about it. I hope to stay there my next trip(whenever that may be).

As someone who stays there everytime I visit I would definatly rent one of their golf carts to get around the campground (they are a big help in getting to the boat dock instead of waiting on the buses.) The cabins are wonderful especially if you have kids (they can be loud and have fun without having to worry about the people on the other side of the wall.) If you are planning on cooking in the trailer I would go to a grocery store off of Disney property, we always go to Publix.

We brought our bikes a few times, that was nice too. We never rented one of the golf carts, but I can remember a lot of walking was done before we got to the parks. Also, I loved the train they used to have, only got to ride it a couple times before it was gone, but I wish it was still there my son would have loved to see it.

Heading for the great escape.
We staid there this summer. we followed advice and asked for a cabin that was close to the pool and a bus stop. To be honest dont be afraid of walking it takes 15-20 mins to walk from Shawnee bends to the marina. The internal bus was every 15 mins or so.

The cabin was well equiped and beautifully clean. They provide cleaning items like dish washer powder etc. Unfortunately due to the storms we never had a BBQ but one is at each cabin site. The shops have the essential s but at Disney prices but like has already be said the Publix and Walmart in Kisimmee made living affordably a breeze. Its nice to have that big fridge freezer.

Trails End was a good place to eat, a very reasonably priced buffet we had both breakfast and dinner here and it was good. The boats are also a nice way to get to the MK and the other MK area resorts, if your haeding that way for a meal. The boat service is also very reliable.

I cant really comment on the transport to the other parks as I drove, however my wife did use it and said she had no problems, despite the doom and gloom cast by some guidebooks.

The pools are very basic, but are popular especially post park time. My daughter went pony trecking and loved it. The cms were very good with her. Checkin /out was efficient even with the minor hiccup of failing to realise Id already paid in full. They provided plenty of information about the resort and parks.

Never did the hoop de doo, not my thing, nor did we doo the camp fire, the kids wernt interested. The resort is very relaxed very well maintained and has so much to offer, that you could spend a holiday there itsself. Had it not been for our eldest not going this year we would have definately returned, but with only 4 of us going weve decided to try another resort.

Im sure if you go you will not regret it.

:sohappy: One of my favorite resorts at WDW! We always enjoy staying at the cabins because it feels more relaxed. All that room, a kitchen! Just the best! And Trail's End Buffet! The best! If you eat there, request to have Bob as your waiter! He's the best! He really makes your time at the restaurant fun! I have some pictures of the cabins. If you would like to see them, just send me a PM.

Make sure that you rent a golf cart. This resort is very large and they have a limited amount of them to go around, so put your order in early.
