Operations vs Merchandise

Hey all,

Recently for a program I've been given the option of operations or merchandise, they've given me a week to have a think about it. Just wanted to see if I could possibly get some thoughts on anyone who has done either, or what one is more enjoyable?

Any feed back would be awesome!

Attractions is included, yes

Oh okay. I did the College Program, but I did it at Disneyland so I hope I can still help you! I was placed in attractions, more specifically Fantasyland. I loved it. At first I was weirded out and sort of nervous because I was told I would be trained in ten out the the thirteen attractions in Disneyland's Fantasyland, and everyone else in the program who had been put in attractions was only learning one. I was only expecting to learn one ride but instead I learned ten so it was quite a shock for me!

I loved attractions simply because I loved learning which buttons to push to make the ride operate. I had always wondered how it worked as a guest and now I finally know how! It can get overwhelming sometimes but it was still a lot of fun. They trained us (Fantasyland CMs) for three days for each rotation. Rotation 1 consisted of the Casey Jr Train, Pinoccchio, Peter Pan, and Dumbo. After you learn the ride, you read the manual and you take a test. It tests you on your knowledge of how to operate the ride, and what you would do in certain situations like earthquakes (in your case hurricanes), fires, or any kind of other emergency. Rotation 2 consisted of Mr. Toad, Alice in Wonderland, Teacups, the Carousel, Snow White, and the Castle Walk-Through.

The best thing about working in attractions was getting to make people happy. You're in control of who gets on the ride and who doesn't, so we were always allowed to "make magic". Basically we'd be allowed to pick a random family and give them passes for another ride or let them get on a Fantasyland ride through the exit so they wouldn't have to wait in line. Seeing the guests light up with happiness was the best part. I always had a lot of fun. Attraction CMs were also GSO (guest control) CMs and guest control is a ton of fun because you get to talk to the guests. I don't know if this is the same at WDW.

Although I loved the guests, I couldn't stand them sometimes either. You have to deal with people not listening to you and sometimes they put themselves in danger on the ride, or right before they get on. You always have to be quick and on alert for the guests, and when they don't listen it gets frustrating. Another thing I didn't like was the hours. Attractions CMs ALWAYS get crazy hours! It gets even worse when there's a private party. Another thing is you don't get to make long conversations with the guests. You usually have enough time to say hello, how are you, hope you're having a great day, and then you send them off. Then again it depends in which attraction you get.

Overall I had a great time with attractions in my home of Fantasyland! I wouldn't trade it for another experience and I hope this helps with your decision. Let me know if you need more assistance, I'll be happy to help!

PS: I almost forgot, be prepared for breakdowns and any other downtimes! I hated those! Be prepared for angry guests and remember to always stick to the theme, for example Pinocchio has been lying and being a bad little boy, so we've got to teach him a lesson in telling the truth. This is something you'd tell the guests if Pinocchio were to break down.

I've done 2 cp's, and lucky for you, they were operations and merchandise. :):ROFLOL:

Know that they both have their ups and downs.

If you do operations, you might get a lot of guest interaction if you're at say, tower of terror, and you might get moderate interaction if you're at innoventions like I was. I loved the job, got a little boring at times, but just like any other job, you will have the occasional person you don't like. I had a few scripts to follow which weren't hard to follow at all. I was stationed at the tipboard and we all shifted, the tipboard got frustrating when you're out in that scorching florida sun for 2 hours at a time.

My 2nd cp was merchandising. No matter where you are, you're guaranteed heavy guest interaction. Merchandising was my introduction to retail. So if you've never had retail experience, this could be good for you. I was stationed at america in WS, and we also were sent to village traders. I felt like management cared less for us in merchandising than my experience in operations. for example, the air conditioning in the store in america broke, and it took WEEKS for them to fix it. in vt, there was a co worker who was definitely not a person meant to be working at disney. And in a location that only has 3 people stationed there, it only takes 1 person to ruin it for everyone.

Let me know if you have any more questions, feel free to PM me

I've done CPs in both (Fantasyland merchandise, Toy Story Mania, and Great Movie Ride). I prefered doing attractions over merchandise
