Usually I keep pretty quiet about my volunteer work--I'm sure most of you have your own volunteer organizations you work with. But I've been doing this all summer, and now more than ever it seems there's more work to be done.
I'm working with a non-profit called Operation Paperback, which collects used paperbacks and videos and sends them to our troops overseas. Before September 11, on any given day over 250,000 American service members were deployed. Now, that number is obviously growing.
The organization needs two things: people to donate, collect, and ship the books (at a cost of between $7-9 or $10-12 for about 65 paperbacks and videos, depending on where they are sent to), and donations to ship out the 10,000 labeled, packed books ready to go. To date, over 48,000 books have been shipped worldwide, and since I pack and ship the books myself and get the thank-you emails in response, I can assure you, I know books are appreciated.
