onsite vs offsite

We are leaving in 14 days!!!! and staying onsite at CB. Can anyone give me pros and cons to staying offsite? We loved staying at POFQ last year, but wanted options for the next visit. Planning on upgrading from park-hopper passes to annual since Mardi Gras is earlier next year.

Thanks:sohappy: :sohappy:

Onsite is the only way to go for us. Just do what ever you can and have fun! Offsite offers price breaks and cheap places to eat. Onsite allows you to have that Disney touch at any point of time. My last stay ay AKL my little one couldn't sleep so I took her for a walk to look at the animals at 5:00 in the morning. A little bit of private Disney magic for us.

I was comparing prices just yesterday. We are staying in a resort that is not that far from WDW. In fact it is closer to MK than some of the on-site resorts. We wanted a suite where we could put the kids to bed in a separate room instead of turning off all the lights and keeping quiet by 8:00 at night in a standard hotel room. The difference in price between an off-site "family" suite resort and an on-site Disney suite resort was literally $250-$400 per night. After doing that research, I'm not sure we will ever stay on-site. Mainly because I can't justify paying that much of a difference.

And it seems that some off-site resorts actually have Disney character breakfasts. I'm not sure how that is possible, but I read it in the Unofficial Guide.

Disney resorts look top notch, but unless I was only going to go once in my life I think I'd pass.

1) Transportation - available for all guests to use - the only one you wouldn't (perhaps) use is the bus to and from the parks - unless you've got a meal booked at the resort
2) A 20 minute drive from a hotel or villa is just as short as the bus ride
3) Theming is everywhere within the parks - you only miss out at the resort
4) Isn't this the same as 2) ??
OFFSITE
1) Yep - a great deal cheaper. And we're talking around $1800 cheaper for two weeks

On site vs. Offsite

I have to say that many people have more money than I do. I am fortunate enough to have had the cash to buy my wife and I an annual pass and we went on our honeymoon for two weeks. At that time we stayed on site at CBR. Now, I have to say that I loved staying there. I really did. It was beautiful and quiet.

However, I think some people are paying for extra ammenities aside from what comes with the room standard. At CBR, as wonderful as it was, it was nothing more than a normal place. Sure, the room was nice, but CBR has some of the biggest rooms on the entire Disney property (nearly every hotel room other than CBR and one other place is smaller than a standard hotel room in square footage) and was the size of an average hotel room.

It was colorful and clean, but it was no more spectacular inside than any other place than color. YOu can stay at very clean hotels for hundreds PER NIGHT cheaper.

TV shows (Travel Channel) make it sound so incredible, and it is, if you are paying for the rooms they are. The Travel Channel is purchasing the top price of everything you see. You see them getting massages and all. Sure you can get it, but it's HIGH PRICED and NOT included in the price, which some think after seeing these programs.

We got no special treatment or pampering of any type while at CBR, so I dont see what the big deal is. We loved the atmosphere but for the money I just dont see the point of paying that kind of money, unless you go seldomly. When you go rarely, sure, it's nice just to stay on the site, just to know you are there.

Others make the argument of staying on site to allow for easy transportation to parks and back...........................................I can say that is what I was most excited about in preparing for my honeymoon. I even stated on this very board that I didnt want to touch my car after I parked it, until my two weeks was up.

Not only did it not turn out like that, I used my car ALOT the second week.

First of all, like many others have said, the buses are free to everyone. Also, don't fool yourself, people not staying on the property can and will park on your resort, (yes you can go on a resort you are not staying at) and they will actually hop on your bus to go to the parks. We saw it.
Secondly, the buses are EXTREMELY crowded at night on the way back to the resort and some resorts are far away from the MK especiallly which means you could be standing and holding rails for a 15 minute ride.
Thirdly, before you even get the bus to return to your resort from the parks, it may take what seems to be forever to get a bus. No, this isnt just your imagination in waiting. During peak times, it was not uncommon to wait over a half hour to get a bus from MK to CBR.

by the beginning of the second week, we noticed ourselves worn out just from waiting on buses and riding full buses. It got to the point where we felt like we had to be at the station of MK to watch fireworks so that we could be the first out to the bus station. We quickly realize how rediculous that is since we were on our honeymoon, yet, you can't hang around all night and wait, because the crowds gather and the buses only run an hour after park closes.

So, the second week we began driving our own car to the parks, EXCEPT FOR mk. Mk is still quicker by bus because of parking, then monorail/ferry, whereas the bus drops you off at the gate.

Example: After Fantasmic! we waited 15 minutes for a bus (after we arrived at the station) then it took another 15 to finally get dropped off at our stop. Now if you notice CBR is just around the corner from MGM. We drove our own car the next time and from the time we were in the parking lot until we parked at CBR was 8 minutes instead of over 30. This extra times makes a big difference when you are tired.

Sure, it's nice to stay on the property but, it's really not a pampered fill time unless you just have cash to throw around, which I dont.

This time we're going back for our first Anniversary and staying at a NICE hotel off site for MUCH cheaper and it's actually much NICER than CBR (CBR is nice though) and it's nice to know that we'll probably actually be back at our resort before most people on the property.

I see you are in Houma? I grew up in Thibodaux. But I live in Vero Beach now. Anyway, we go to Disney a lot. Even tho it is only a couple hours away, we almost always go for several days at a time.

We've stayed on site and off site. But now mostly we stay off site.

We stayed at the all star movie once, but that was just too small. It is no bigger than a typical holiday inn, and with kids, we want them to have their own room, so we would need two rooms. We can get a 2 or 3 BR condo with full kitchen off site for a lot less.

As you can see from all the posts, there is no real good answer - it just depends on what you want. I'll tell you, after a full day at the parks, when you are exhausted, it is so much nicer to come into a 1500 sq. ft condo than a 250 sq foot hotel room. The condos we get have jacuzzi tubs, 2 or 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen with a stove, full size fridge, dishwasher and a washer and dryer.

Yes, you can get these things at Disney, but it will cost a lot more. If money is no concern, then stay at Disney - otherwise off site is the way to go. There are lots of condos close by that are off site.

And unless your hotel is on the monorail line, you won't reap any Disney transportation benefits. Their busses are slow and far in between.

The one time when I think an on-site room is nice is if you will be spending a lot of time in the room. One time we went to Disney without kids, and just wanted to relax and not rush for anything. We stayed at the poly and it was great. My wife would nap in the afternoon and I'd take the monrail to EPCOT and hop on Test Track, or just walk around the grounds - or just check out all the other hotels, etc. That was fun and being on site was manadtory for what we wanted to do.

Let us all know what you do and give us a trip report when you come back.

If finances are an issue in your trip planning, then by all means stay off site. Any trip to WDW is better than no trip at all. We choose to stay on property because we do treat the entire WDW resort as one giant attraction. I find the theming and level of service to be beyond that of off site properties, and as such, I am willing to pay for that. I also like the fact that I can fly into Orlando, hop the shuttle, and spend a week relaxing at WDW without the need of a car, which saves me a bunch of money vs. a rental.

When I first looked at this thread, I was one of the ones thinking "There are no pros for off site!" But after a little thought, I realize that for many people, there are. Good discussion! That's what I love about WDWMagic.com!

Only if you book direct with a travel agent.

Hard rock 4 nights with Virgin + tickets for 5 was around £1800 (no flights)

Direct with discount £600 with tickets and a free room upgrade.

I couldnt afford to spend two weeks at a Disney resort if I paid brochure prices, i use the phone and codes from mousesavers, and a 3 bed villa 50 mins drive from the world becomes a cabin at FW.

Reasons to stay on site, E ride nights (if they ever return).
By the way you can save more money (especially if travelling with kids over 12) if you book a fly drive and just book a room on line, use a link similar to the one on the main page of this iste, because unlike Expedia you dont pay till check in.

Avoid Rip of Britain prices, book on line.

The key word here is "IF". You know, if you asked me what the #1 benefit of staying on site was, I'd say Eride. Now that's gone. It doesnt look promising to come back. they dont even have any scheduled for Peak season. It's really becomming a joke.

I have tried both and onsite is the only way for me. I really enjoy driving car and parking for the entire stay. As for the money I am not rich by any means but the little extra cost does not hurt that much. I look for bargins on rooms and never pay full price for them. I am staying at Pop Century in MArch for 64.00 a night which is not that much more than offsite. Stayed at Animal Kingdom last June for 79.00 per night with a Savannah view. So if you research and try you can make it affordable and fun. It would not be Disney if we stayed offsite. Just my humble opinion.
