Been awhile since our last stay. Arriving at midnight after a long drive. How does online check in work? Can we do it while on the road and just use our magic bands to get into our room, bypassing the front desk altogether?

You can do it now, and yes you can skip the front desk, if you have no special requests, such as birthday pins.

You can always go to the front desk the next for for things like birthday pins, or guest relations in the parks.
