There are two main types of matches: safety matches, which can be struck only against a specially prepared surface; and strike-anywhere matches, for which any solid surface can be used.

In simple terms, a safety match will only ignite against the strip on the side of the matchbox, Strike-anywhere matches can be lit against a brick.

Today's my day for answering obscure questions I guess:

A ponytail is a style of arranging hair to resemble the tail of a pony. It gets its name from its resemblance to the undocked tail of a horse or pony. A single ponytail is most commonly gathered at the center back of the head or the base of the neck. Depending on fashions, it may also be worn toward one side of the head (over one ear), or on the very top of the head (allowing the hair to fall down the back or one side of the head).
If the hair is divided into two symmetrical ponytails, they are bunches or pigtails. If the hanging section is plaited instead of left to fall free, it is called a braid or plait rather than a ponytail.

Alot of people call strike anywhere matches "kitchen matches" although most matches that are sold as "kitchen matches" are safety matches now days. The strike anywhere matches are not as safe because in transit if the match heads hit against each other they can ignite although it is a very outside chance.
Strike anywhere matches are hard to find anymore.
