Old Key West is a great resort. Very clean and such as all the Disney resorts are.

You may want to stop by a supermarket to pick-up some things since you will have a refridgerator (not sure if the studio rooms have this or not, myabe someone can confirm this for you). They have a bit of a market store/gift shop onsite at the hotel but, a off property store should be cheaper.

It's nearby to Downtown Disney so that is nice.

Overall it is one of my favorite places to stay. Have a great time!

We've been there once and are going back in June. It's beautiful. Just enough off the beaten path to help you relax from the crowds.

The 2 BR's are huge. Check the "Unofficial Guide" for the best rooms and how/when to fax a request for which bldg and room you would prefer.

Bus service is as good as anywhere else -- actually we found it better than we had at the Polynesian. Nothing's as good as the monorail. I think it's worth waiting for the boat to Downtown Disney rather than taking the bus. I really enjoy that ride. It leaves from the dock by the pool.

Olivia's is good. Not fancy but relaxing. They used to have a Pooh character breakfast there but don't know if they're still doing it.

I know you'll love it.

My Two Cents

My thoughts on OKW -

This is Walt Disney World’s best kept secret for a resort! My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon last November, and we loved the place! Here are my thoughts based on a 1-bedroom villa, since this is what we had during our stay. The 2-bedroom villa is identical, except it has a Studio villa attached -

Pros –
1) Large, large, large room! This is one of the biggest rooms on site, measuring over 1,000 square feet! Compare that to a moderate resort where you only get 314 square feet!
2) Park in front of your door! No need to slog your way through a general parking lot, then walk to the other side of the building – you get out of your car, and in a few steps, you’re in the front door!
3) Nice screened-in patio with a fan, with table and chairs!
4) Two-person Jacuzzi in the master bath – very romantic!
5) Washer and dryer are included, and if you get the right mouse-keeper, unlimited laundry detergent! Take home clean clothes for a change!
6) Fully stocked kitchen – eat some or all of your meals in your room! Keep snacks and cold beverages handy for mid-day snacks or late night munchies. Of course, there is a dish washer, so dirty all of the dishes!
7) Two TVs in two separate rooms. Does a member of the family need to take a nap? No problem – send them to the bedroom, close the door, and watch TV in the other room without disturbing them!
8) A TV with a VCR, if you need to watch a movie (which can be rented in the main building).
9) A very quiet, low-key resort.

Cons –
1) Average theming – nothing spectacular, but coherent.
2) Not very kid friendly.
3) Because the resort is sprawling, most buildings are a long hike to the main building for provisions, front desk, food, etc. But there are numerous bus stops and three extra pools strategically placed around the resort so you don’t have to walk very far for those services.
4) A stand-alone resort – you can walk or boat to Downtown Disney, but that’s all. You’ll need to use either the bus or your own car to go anywhere else.
5) The age of the resort is showing through in a few places.
6) Can be expensive – prices range for a 1-bedroom from $340 to $510 depending on the time of the year. This is almost $200 more than a moderate, BUT, you get a whole lot for the money.

Overall, this is a great place to stay. You get an awful lot for the money – more room, more amenities, more room, and some peace and quiet. Our honeymoon here was outstanding, and we will be back but maybe not with our kids. Having seen how other resorts cater to the kids (two words – Stormalong Bay), there is not a lot to keep young kids occupied. And having a free washer and dryer available meant we brought less clothes, and went home with only clean clothes. And did I also mention how big these rooms are?

Give Old Key West a try, you won’t be disappointed!

I have never stayed at OKW, (yet) but have only heard good things about it from other DVC members. One nice thing is for DVC it is less points then say VWL or BCV. So you can get a good deal on it. I have also heard Olivias is good (ate there once 7 years ago, some kind of Mango Crab cake, it was good. )

It-hambone, what a comprhensive list. WOW!!!!!!!! Sounds like it would be a good resort to have your car at.

Have a great trip

Very good review, Hambone. I have a couple comments on your comments.

In a 2BR there are 3 TV's in 3 rooms.

IMHO, theming is better than average. It's just Florida theming IN Florida so it doesn't stand out like Africa or Polynesia.

I agree everything is spread out. That's why I recommend getting the "Unofficial Guide" and deciding on where you want to stay within the resort. A very important detail IMO.

They have been renovating extensively. They should be finshed or close by now. Hopefully the aging you mention isn't apparent any more.

I have 5 kids. The pool has nothing fancy for them, I agree. And the long walks with street-crossings required are a disadvantage for younger kids. Otherwise there's not much difference. Driving up to your door is definitely a plus here.

We ate at Olivia's tonight and wanted to take the water taxi to DD afterward, but they were closed today. CMs said to take the bus. :( Bleh. We just drove back to our room at BWV.

What I meant by average theming is that while you feel like you are in Florida, there is nothing that "pops out" at you. For example - the immense lobby of the Wilderness Lodge, the animals at the AKL, the lush tropical touches at the Poly, the New Orleans feel at Dixie Landing. OKW has great theming, but nothing to set it apart from the other Disney resorts.

As for being spread-out, this is very true. Before requesting a room, decide what you want to be closer t00 - bus stop, pool, great view, etc. Then take a look at the resort map and decide what building meets your needs - here's a link to a map of OKW.

We stayed in Building 55 - right next to a pool, a short walk from the bus stop, on the water with a great view, and at the end of court. If a good pool is your priority, try for a building around the hospitality house. If you are going to rely heavily on the busses, try for a building close to a bus stop, but NOT the Hospitality House since their bus stop seems to be the busiest. If you want quiet, try for a building at the end of a court.

But no matter which building you choose, you will be quite pleased!

Good luck!

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. Well worth the price, even if you're not real compulsive. Bring it with you and I'll bet you'll use it several times or more.

Their reporters check out every room in every resort so they can help you find what you want.

Your DVC material should tell you what beds are standard in a 2BR. I think the web site has that info also. I think that the master has a king and the 2nd BR has 2 queens. I'm not sure whether some condos have 1 queen and 1 queen sleeper sofa in the 2nd. the living area has a queen sleeper sofa.

If in doubt call. Although it can be hard to get through, the DVC receptionists have never failed to be incredibly helpful, knowledgable and upbeat -- in my experience. this is one of the hidden benefits of DVC.

I stayed here for a couple nights w/ my best friend and her kids. I loved the resort, but the kid thing was awful.
Hey, it was free for me, she took me as a guest!
No really the resort is beautiful.

Enjoy your trip!
