Old Disney Art found in Janitors closet?

I was about to post this last night...yeah, it's a great story and a nice piece in the Times (linked on the Disney Blog, but here again for convenience):

I hope these somehow make their way into the public eye again--exhibition, book, however. The old Silly Symphony cels are historic, and the Sleeping Beauty art is just gorgeous...though I've gathered that he's a controversial figure (whose vision is sometimes credited for the failure of Sleeping Beauty), Eyvind Earle is undeniably a phenomenal artist whose work deserves more exposure.

Why contraversial? Was Sleeping Beauty a failure? I do not know much about Disney History, your comments have me intriuged.

I would have asked the same question myself--I knew Sleeping Beauty wasn't a slam-dunk financially, but I didn't know that its performance was poor enough to apparently still be debated in animation circles today. What I've read was found on the blog below when doing a search for Eyvind Earle's art:

Some of the things they say are pretty interesting. I don't know enough about the situation to be able to form a valid opinion, but I can say I do notice some of the things they mention in their comments--that the film is visually stunning and that literally every frame could be a stand-alone work of art, but that there's something "off" and a little cold about the whole thing. Like I said, I can't really pass judgement. But I do know, whether or not he ran the production into the ground as some claim, that Eyvind Earle had a fantastic eye and deserves to be recognized more.

earle was an unlikely choice to spearhead a film, as he was relatively inexperienced and his style is more angular than disney's typical round & approachable animation. there is a great commentary track on the last sleeping beauty dvd that came out, and they discuss it quite a bit.

Thanks! I do love the way the movie looks but when watching with my kids I don't get the time to let a movie soak in and enjoy like I used too. Thanks for the info, I assumed that the movie was a success b/c she was a princess and with out much competition then most I assumed Disney moives were a success. I will have to pay closer attention on our next viewing, to see if I notice the character and background differences. That is if I get to see any other part of the movie where the Godmother's keep changing the dress color. AHHH 2 year olds and movies.
Is there a date for a 2nd DVD release? We have a very abused VHS copy and can't seem to find a DVD anywhere but Ebay. Even our local libarary DVD copy is out of commisson from damage.
