OHANA vs LUAU

I did the Lua many many years ago. I remember two things:

1. A guy in grass skirt risking his life whipping around a pole with flaming knives on the end.
2. My wife sound a sleep (in one of the most uncomfortable chairs I've ever sat in), snoring while said guy risked his life.

What I don't remember is the food. I love food. that should tell you something right there.

Ohana? Well I'll never forget the first time I tasted those vittles 8 some odd years ago!
Since then a dinner at Ohana has become a top 2-3 MUST DO for every trip to WDW!

That's my 2 cents.

Mr. jones, you actually made me laugh out loud...good thing I was alone or people would think I'm crazy

We need time for things to happen.

Good stuff! That happens to me all the time while I'm on these here boards..something will just hit me and I'm chuckling...My family looks over to see the WDWMagic splash page and just shake their heads..."nerd!"

I did both this past September, and although the Luau was entertaining and a fun night, the food at Ohana is no comparison. Ohana is now a must do every trip. The food at the luau is ok...Ohana is by far my favorite meal at all of WDW.

I first got on this blog to tell somone to never ever to the Spirit of Aloha shoe at the Poly. Food is awful, beer is cheap and warm and the show is way too long.

Ohana is awesome! The food is great!

Seeing this site is so insightful, I figured I'd put this out there: We are headed down in October to WDW and we'd like to hit either Ohana or the Luau at the Poly. We've never done either but I've read reviews on both and although I was leaning towards the Luau, the reviews of Ohana are far better it seems. I realize the Luau is probably more of a show but we'd also like to have a great evening of food and drinks.

Thoughts on the two? One over another?
We have done both, but Ohana is a *must do* every trip. Spirit of Aloha is one of those things you may want to experience once. (very expensive) Dinner at Ohana is much more enjoyable than that of Spirit of Aloha, in my very honest opinion.

My Ohana review is on post 3 of my ridiculously long Trip Report, if you're interested.

As much as I really enjoyed Ohana, I made the mistake of not being ravaging hungry. So please, make sure you're borderline starving. :) They serve ALOT of food to you!

Everything was fantastic, I just wish I was able to eat more off my table than we did.

Absolutely! The more the merrier. Only one problem I have seen is that the RSVP for Ohana is only available at 900 pm!! So looks like a dinner/ watch fireworks evening

OMG sometimes bragging is not a good thing, :) That is the best time to be at Ohana. It is something about being at Ohana eating dinner looking at the twinkling lights over the MK then the beautiful fireworks begin. It is truly an amazing experience.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get a last minute table at Ohana overlooking the castle in December. And the fireworks were beautiful that coupled with snow lights it was breathtaking. You will have a wonderful time :D

Oh- so I guess the 9pm rsvps are a good thing. I didn't remember when the fireworks were, but I figured it would be one or the other (dinner or FWs), but if we can hit both, it would be great. Like I said, we have never eaten there so this thread has helped me confirm the Ohana evening over the Luau. I'm just so excited I don't want to miss anything and definitely would love the chance to incorporate new places to our trip.

How did you get the table looking at the castle? Did you request it?

I think the fireworks are typically at 9pm or 10pm. If they are at 10pm and your ressie at 9pm do not rush to try and get to the MK for the fireworks. Trust me, the view is amazing. Even if you do not have a table view - everyone goes over to the window to look out and they pipe in the music into the resturant (I think its been a while). In regards to the table - I had requested a table view and got it but this was also during the off season of early November. But it never hurts to try and most CMs are willing to work their magic to ensure guest happiness.

I have done both and I'd choose Ohana or Kona any day over the Luau! It was boring and the food was just blah!

If you want to do a fun dinner show, go to Hoop Dee Doo Revue! But still don't skip Ohana!!

I think you need to experience both as they each have a certain something to them. Not the best food ever, but experience none the less. The luau is corny but kind of fun. Ohana has a different atmoshphere and fun in a different way. After doing both you'll probably lean toward Ohana, but you'll know what you're missing at the luau.
