'Ohana Lei Question

I'm posting here b/c it's not regarding food ;) We've eaten breakfast and dinner at 'Ohana, but only received flower leis at breakfast. We have an early dinner ADR at 'Ohana on our upcoming trip and the plan is to head into MK afterwards for MSEP, Wishes, etc. I love having us in glow accessories, and I was thinking it might be fun to take glow sticks and string them through flower leis (i.e. GLOW LEIS :geek:). BUT- I don't want to buy leis (or bring our old ones) if the odds are in our favor to get leis at dinner.

So, have you received flower leis at 'Ohana dinner? - and were we just an uncommon exception? OR- is it pretty common to not receive them?

Did you know you can buy glow in the dark spray paint? It is like a clear covering but will then glow in the dark at night. I just bought some for my Darling Daughter's Halloween Costume. Thought you might like that idea for the leis.

Edited to add: If you bring the ones from home you can spray them with the glow in the dark spray paint and be ready to go.

One of these days I will proof read before hitting post.

They added the photo spot the last time we were there in 2011. It was an option for both breakfast and dinner in a hut looking backdrop with some flowers and a surf board on it. We didn't get the picture because it was extra and not a great shot of us. It was on the second floor, near Ohana's, on the right side of the Great Ceremonial House. I really like the glow in the dark spray idea!

They had us take the pic at breakfast when we were there in 2011, but they didn't do any of it with dinner. I'm wondering if it all hinges on crowds at the time.

Had to share this...my coworkers all came to my rescue today and supplied me with a wide range of colored leis.

So, we'll be good no matter what happens. Although, I think I may go in search of the pain @DJMoore2011 suggested. Just make them even more fun!

That is AWESOME the spray paint I bought was at Lowes but I've seen it at home depot too. Oh and Dear Hubby said he saw it at Walmart too.

Cannot wait to see what you come up with!

I actually bought the glow spray paint today. I've put on 3 layers so far. It goes on clear, so you can't tell they glow until the lights go out. I don't know if it's the paint or the material of the leis, but they don't glow as much as I'd expected- although still very cool looking. Still, I think I'm going to just leave them as is and use the remainder of the spray as a glow treat for the girls. I'm thinking about having DH send them out to play for a while so I can paint stars on their bedroom walls. And they won't realize it until the lights go out at bed time. :D

Well that is kind of a bummer that it doesn't glow that much. Is it like some of those shirts where you have to expose it to light for a bit then it glows or is it just suppose to glow without the light charge phase?

It's traditional glow in the dark - needs light to charge it. It's what I expected but I was hoping the glow would be a bit brighter. My sneakers have really bright glow in the dark details on them that work like this and I was really hoping the leis would wind up glowing at that level of brightness. It's still bright enough that DH said it looked cool - so it's not a wasted effort either.

Not my pic, but this is what the back of my sneakers look like with the glow in the dark sections (front glows too)...
th

They also have sections that fluoresce under black lights.

What's funny, even though the joggers really glow, it still needs to be super dark to make them stand out. So, for that reason...I'm OK with the leis. I may bring a small flashlight to charge them up just before MSEP since they should at least be visible when the lights go out on MSUSA and should definitely be visible on any dark rides.

I'll try and take a pic of the glowing leis and post it later on tonight.

OK- this was the best pic I could get of the glowing leis. They actually look brighter in the pic than they really are since I had to tweak the camera settings considerably just to capture the light. I also had to shut off the auto focus since it didn't want to cooperate. I tried using my sneakers as a guide, but they were brighter - so they were easier to get an accurate photo. So, picture these a few lumens lighter than the image below. Still cool though.

Sorry it wasn't bright enough, I thought for sure it would be. So did you do the stars on your girls wall?? Did they like??? I have a friend who will be painting a mural on Darling Daughters wall of Tink and the other Fairies and thinking of using the glow in the dark paint to make it some how look like the Tree of Life is Glowing. Not sure how I am going to do that though.

I still think it's very cool and am so glad you made the suggestion. The kids will still love them and they'll come in handy for our annual holiday season campout. I got lazy and didn't get to their rooms, but I'm going to work on some stencils tomorrow. As for the Tink tree idea...stencils would be best for the fairies and I think the tree could be done with either painters tape with finer detail stencils. Very cool idea!!!

Glad I could help. I am crafty and cheap LOL so I am always looking out for good ideas. The lady that is painting the mural owed me some major favors for babysitting her granddaughter a lot, so she's doing the tree and we found some 3-D wall stickers of Tink and the others, just not sure how to incorporate the glow in the dark paint but I am sure that Gypsy will have some way to do it.
