Well, after three straight nights I'm back with my reviews. Since it's a lot of stuff I'm just going to start with the house reviews, and I will add scarezone, Bill and Ted and my feelings on the event overall.
All reviews are graded in for categories. Those for are Creepiness, Scariness, Coolness and Overall. Creepiness regards how foreboding a house or scarezone comes across. Scariness regards the actual scare factor. Coolness regards how unique the area is, or how well the situation is presented, and overall is a final score based on my personal feelings. House reviews will move in a counter-clockwise starting at Disorientorium. Scarezone reviews will start at the Point of Evil, and follow the same rotation.
Houses
Disorientorium-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
Disorientorium fits the style of last year’s Funhouse of Fear. It is an effects house, primarily utilizing illusions that have all been seen before. Ranging from the white and black room, to a hall of mirrors, a repeat visitor can’t help but feel like this house provides the same old song and dance. I’m sure it’s a terrifying experience if your drunk, but sober its just not very good.
Horrors in Wax-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
One of the most promising concepts for this year’s event turns into a major disappointment. Lackluster costumes combined with a difficult to comprehend house comes across as too forced in order to be truly enjoyable.
Ghost Town-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
A unique concept that is effectively pulled off, Ghost Town achieves many aspects that made ScreamHouse such a critical success two years ago. A strong, character-driven storyline, in association with great detailing and phenomenal effects creates a truly immersive environment that is uniquely terrifying, and still amazingly fun. The only house that still had me running out the sixth time through.
Horror Nights Nightmare-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
Combining the most popular mascots of Horror Nights past is such a great concept on paper, that it’s sad how poorly the house actually turned out. It’s easy enough to follow with a concept much like last year’s DrIvE-In, however the detail is lacking, and makes the experience as a whole rather disappointing. The coolest part is just seeing everyback, especially Eddie, and the chainsaws are scary, but it’s not enough to regulate it to above average status.
Deadtropolis-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
Capitalizing on the abundance of zombie films in the last year, Deadtropolis comes in as a surprisingly enjoyable house. It lacks in the detail when compared to the better houses, but it works amazingly well with the effects that they utilize. It may not be amazing scary, but it is a refreshingly good time.
Castle Vampyr-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
Castle Vampyr is the prettiest house this year. A great gothic theme, with bungie scares and a unique style make a house that is at least enjoyable to walk through. However, the scares utilized are cheap and ineffective. However, the style is making it one of the most popular houses this year. Prepare for a long line on this one.
Hellgate Prison-
Creepiness- 1 2 3 4 5
Scariness- 1 2 3 4 5
Coolness- 1 2 3 4 5
Overall- 1 2 3 4 5
A house with a concept that seems tired, but Universal as succeeded in using creates a truly enjoyable experience. The scaractors here have a freedom in their movements that really allows the feeling of chaos to sink in. Allowing them to move freely through a well themed room adds foreboding, and intensifies the experience as a whole.
