Off-Site or On-Site?

IMHO you should definitely stay on-site! If you have a tight budget, then book a value resort (beware Art of Animation Suites are more expensive). It has a "motel-like" atmosphere-true- but there's nothing like staying on Disney property! If you don't enjoy it, then perhaps you can book off site next time ( and believe me if you love Disney there will be a next time). After that, you'll work your way up to the moderately priced resorts that have a few more amenities! Beware! When you go DELUXE- you'll never go back!:)

Since this will be your first trip to the world, if your budget will allow, stay on-site and enjoy all the ammenities your resort can offer which will make it hopefully so magical that it becomes the first of many more trips! You only get one shot at your first visit so I would probably splurge a little more, especially if you don't see yourself returning again soon. As @disneysince71 has so wonderfully "illustrated", staying on-site helps to keep you in the Disney state of mind, providing easy transportation to all the parks, early and late hours for the parks and just keeping you in that Magic Bubble we all talk about. Have a great vacation!

If it's in your budget, I would definitely stay onsite. While you'll hear many people speak of the 24/7 magic bubble...it's the convenience that won us over. Back in 1998, our offsite lodging free shuttle left us stranded at Epcot for hours. Fast forward to 2006 and a good friend had a near identical experience with a free shuttle from another offsite hotel. While I've had a few above average waits and one monorail fiasco, I have never been stranded like this by any Disney transportation. You also typically burn less time getting from point a to point b by staying onsite and that time is even extended with extra magic hours if you stay onsite. We all spend the same amount on our park tickets...so just think about the extra park time you will get if you stay onsite...should you utilize EMH.
