OC Register-People are braving long lines right now at Disneyland — for a popcorn bucket, not a ride

All they have to do to solve this problem is make more.

Scarcity increases demand. This is exactly what Disney wants- hearing about how popular these are will get other fans to want them. Seeing the long line for it makes guests think "man, that must be really important/valuable, I want one"

Not that I would want a big piece of plastic designed to hold popcorn, or wait in any long lines to get one if I did want one, but it annoys me that Disney makes these things only available to APs.
Just one more way they give the big 🖕to tourists.

Duffy's introduction to US audiences parallels that of Hello Kitty. At first, Kitty didn't sell because nobody knew or cared who she was. American audiences are used to branded characters coming from TV shows, movies, comic books etc. So that's why they made the Hello Kitty animated series. The original creator wasn't that impressed, but it did the trick and now everyone here knows the character.

Just saying he's "Mickey's bear" clearly wasn't enough to distinguish him.

Having said that, Duffy is big in other parks besides Tokyo. HKDL has an exclusive friend as does Aulani. SDL will get one this year. Given all the other stupid things Disney fans obsess over (like Vinylmation), at least Duffy is cuter than this ugly popcorn bucket.
Season 2 of the Toys That made Us on Netflix covered Hello Kitty. Good documentary.

I thought it would do reasonably well but even the meet and grope and store at DCA didn't do much of anything...at least in the long run.

This is a reason to increase AP prices even more. It's likely not people going to the park to actually visit the park.
When you can easily pay for an AP by going to the park 5 times a year to buy up things like this at the max number allowed in a visit, and resell them at incredible markups, there is something wrong.
Sure, there's capitalism/free market, etc., but in the way of "what would have Walt wanted", this is probably not one of those things.
