"Disneyland’s most avid — some might allege nutty — fans stood in line by the hundreds Friday morning as the park opened, but not to get on a thrill ride. They were there to get their hands on the newest collectible popcorn buckets just released, in the shape of Steamboat Willie, the Mickey Mouse cartoon that started it all 90 years ago.
[…]
Thousands of people avidly collect Disney popcorn buckets and are willing to go to extremes to get them. This bucket was most highly prized because it is available only to Disneyland annual passholders and allows buyers to return it and get free refills for only $1 any time they come to the park until March 7. People are willing to wait in line because the buckets are available for a limited time only and often run out.
[…]
It was unclear whether Disney’s crackdown on third-party reselling of such collectible merchandise had any effect on the demand, though Keiser said the lines seemed significantly shorter than the last time she waited for a similar promotion"

And yes you can easily buy the Steamboat Willie popcorn bucket on eBay with buckets often going for 2x-3x the original asking price. One of the listings is now up at $75!

Thanks for the link to the article. I'm with most of the folks in the comments...I wish Disney would just limit folks to one [insert limited edition geegaw here] per person!

Found a listing on EBay for the bucket that is at $110! Thankfully no one has been stupid enough to actually bid for that bucket, yet. I don’t know why people why people like this bucket so much, there is this Steamboat Willie popcorn bucket from TDL that is much better and costs less on average on EBay.

Wow, Disneyland definitely got the lesser of two buckets.

Just another reminder of the hysteria that comes with our AP population. Disney will smartly milk this “must have everything” mentality for every penny they can.

Wouldn’t someone need another house just to store all of these things? I couldn’t get into collecting things that are infinitely released like popcorn buckets or pins.
You would think so. I’m sure some of it gets displayed while much of it just ends up in a closet or packed away in a box. There really is just an odd “must have” mentality but I guess it’s really not different from other fandoms. We are seeing it with Trader Sam’s mugs now which I’ve decided to no longer collect. The hatbox ghost 6 hour lines (I didn’t bother) kinda killed it for me. Once the popularity reached that kind of audience, it really lost its little niche collecting thing that I enjoyed.

Duffy and Disney Bear (which I believe came first) never really resonated with US fans. I think the attachment to so many well know and unique characters made these bears far less memorable

Duffy's introduction to US audiences parallels that of Hello Kitty. At first, Kitty didn't sell because nobody knew or cared who she was. American audiences are used to branded characters coming from TV shows, movies, comic books etc. So that's why they made the Hello Kitty animated series. The original creator wasn't that impressed, but it did the trick and now everyone here knows the character.

Just saying he's "Mickey's bear" clearly wasn't enough to distinguish him.

Having said that, Duffy is big in other parks besides Tokyo. HKDL has an exclusive friend as does Aulani. SDL will get one this year. Given all the other stupid things Disney fans obsess over (like Vinylmation), at least Duffy is cuter than this ugly popcorn bucket.

In the U.S. Duffy came into a country that co-created the Teddy Bear, is still recovering from Beany Baby fallout, and is saturated with Build-a-Bear workshops. We've got a bear reminding us to put out campfires, a bear stealing pic-a-nic baskets and a bear looming over DCA. Nothing about Duffy made him stand out.
