Yes - as long as the bag in which you put them is no bigger than the airlines stipulated size for carry-on AND as long as you don't activate the GPS while flying

Actually, a GPS receiver is OK to use in-flight.

I presume all U.S. airlines follow similar policies, and GPS units are specifically listed on Delta's website:
http://www.delta.com/traveling_chec...ctivity/personal_electronic_devices/index.jsp

In fact, they're in the list of items that can be used almost the entire flight, except during takeoff and landing.

EDIT: Not that this is official, but I also came across this combined info list about various airlines' policies regarding GPS units:
http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm
Note that Northwest is on the "approved" list.

Actually, I don't want to use any of these items during the flight, i just don't want to have them stolen in my checked suitcase which I can't lock now because of security rules. :(

You can still lock your checked luggage, as long as you use a TSA-approved luggage lock. They have an icon on the lock indicating that it's TSA approved. (The TSA at each airport has a master set of keys to open these locks).

They can be purchased in the travel section of most major stores like Target or Walmart. And all of the manufacturers that I know of have a guarantee that if the TSA *does* cut off the lock, they will replace it for free.

(Though regardless of having one of these locks myself, I still carry all of my electronics in my carryon)

I thought I'd also add that I've seen at least one brand of locks that has a little built-in indicator that switches from green to red if the TSA uses their master key to open the lock.
