If you stay off property you can find a nice resort or hotel for less than 100 bucks a mile or less from DTD. A value resort will cost you more and in early December you may be facing pop Warner or other groups which make a less desirable romantic vacation. Many of the resorts near DTD do have buses to the theme parks so u won't have to drive. Just check with the hotel. But in my experience, as someone that goes to disney at least 10 times a year for over 30 years, it can be much easier and faster to get in your car and drive the 10 minutes back to your hotel than it is to wait for us bus to possibly make numerous stops back to your resort. And don't forget, if you are a florida resident or a passholder, check out tables in wonderland. It easily pays for itself.

Yep, going to stick with the rental car and offsite hotel. I have a balcony suite with a fully furnished balcony. Thinking of having wine and snacks out there and then while we watch the fireworks over the kingdom in the distance (as our balcony is a WDW magic kingdom fireworks view) I'll ask her during that since it'll be quiet and private :-)

While we have been staying on property since 1997, I am wondering, if you stayed off property and parked at DTD, couldn't you just ride the bus over to one of the parks (and get away with free parking?);) Not that I would do that, because my family is spoiled now with staying on property, but just wondering.
Yes you could and I believe many do.

I could be wrong but I don't think the buses go from DTD to a park only to a resort.
Kind of correct, but not. From DTD you can definitely get to the water parks. Matter of fact from the WL they take you to DTD and then you swap to the bus that goes to the water parks. As for MK, etc... you could just ride to the contemporary or poly and ride the monorail, or hope the park busses from there.

Yes, you can park at DTD and take the bus to the parks. You will have to transfer or walk from wherever the bus first drops you. It isn't a direct route, but you can do it. Allow 60 to 90 minutes to get from DTD to the park. If you love at closing, allow 60-120 minutes to get back.

You aren't supposed to do this, but it is possible.

Our experience over the last 2-3 years is that any EMH does draw larger crowds. We now go out of are way to create an itinerary which avoids these days. Not worth the hassle; not much of a perk anymore.

Actually I don't think Disney cares if you do that or not. I guess they figure if you are willing to throw away an easy two hours of your park time to avoid paying a few bucks...go for it. On top of that DTD buses do not start early in the morning like the other buses because DTD doesn't open until after all the parks have been open for a while. Getting there is only half the problem though. You still have to get back at night. That can be much more difficult and you may end up paying the same or more for a taxi then you save by parking in the lots. Along with that it's the end of a long tiring day and you still have to get across property to get to your car. You would still be in route to your vehicle when others that parked in the proper lots were already back to their room taking a shower and having a cold one.:D

Well that blows...I guess I have to decide whether or not all the extra money for a lower end WDW hotel is worth the extra hours....
I know it's available but end up hardly ever using the EMH. Especially at night when we are too tired to go on. Not to say that we don't use it, just not as much as you would think. Also, I have stayed off disney once and it's not near as much fun as staying on site. Just the buses is enough to make it worth it to me.
