No more lip syncing

A few days ago we were in HS and I noticed Ariel was singing. I believe she used to lip sync. I am very happy about this change, it really improves the show.

Are you talking about the Voyage of the Little Mermaid song? I'm guessing you just happened to see a very good performer. Unless something has changed, they are not singing.

When it comes to singing live and lip syncing it all boils down to performer unions. Live singing requires the performer to be in the Actors Equity Union (also used on Broadway and on tours). But other performers can only lip sync as per contract and their union. The later is cheaper but I wish to see more Equity performers in Disney Parks. It pains me to see all of the performers doing the castle shows lip sync but it's probably athstetically difficult due to the complexity of the stage, speakers and other elements of the show.

We have seen Ariel sing numerous times and her voice has always been live...different pauses, pitch, etc. due to the differences in the performers. Eric, on the other hand, has always been a recording (which we find odd as it really stands out against Ariel.)

Belle definitely sings. It sounds different each time and I've even heard some mistakes. Lion King is also live.

I go back and forth on Mermaid. I've seen it so many times, I could swear some of the voices have sounded different for Ariel and the singing has ranged from solid to shaky.

I do know she wears some kind of microphone on top of her head.

You are usually right on, but are you 100% on this? I could swear they sometimes sing it live. It sounds different from show to show.

Also, with the case of the castle shows, certainly the new one as well as the Hocus Pocus Halloween show, they get the original voice actors to record the audio when they can. What's the point in dropping that money if some local actor is just going to do his or her own singing?

I remember a co-worker telling me years ago that they were live but were able to push a button and go to a track to lip sync if needed. Not sure how true this is. Can anyone confirm?

I've seen this happen on Mermaid before. Ariel's mic seemed to be cutting off, and they made the switch. All of the sudden she could be heard perfectly clearly (and her voice sounded different too ;)).
