Nintendo Revolution, Open Brainstorming

This is an old open brainstorming topic I've taken the liberty of bringing over from the now-defunct Sywtbai.com (R.I.P.), just a little something fun to keep us creative this holiday season. Disclaimer: This is NOT the project I took a poll about. That is being worked on privately.

If you're like me, then you have three nerdy hobbies: Disney, Star Wars, and Nintendo. Nintendo in recent years has slowly begun to fall off the radar following the release of the Wii U. As a "90's kid," this disheartens me. To me, Nintendo was the king of video games. To me, it still is, and I know I'm not the only one who believes this. In an alternate universe, Nintendo has approached us lovely folk here on WDWMagic to pioneer its next console. Something unique, innovative, and just as nostalgic as a Nintendo 64. Something HD, but simple. It is our job to figure out a new masterpiece for a new generation. It's time for a revolution.

To start, I think that Nintendo should purchase Rare BACK from Microsoft. Enough said. Second, we should keep our console simple. Remember when the Wii was sold out EVERYWHERE for MONTHS? Remember when the Wii U wasn't? There are many reasons as to why the Wii U did not sell as well as its predecessor. For starters, it didn't have much third-party support, nor did it have many attention-grabbing launch titles (e.g. GameCube had Melee!). Our console will have both. The Wii U, while a great system, is a little too big and complicated. Why not make things simpler and make a console that can provide just as much entertainment with an even better quality? Whatever our console needs, we can discuss. As one with not much passion for technical aspects, I'd rather pitch ideas for launch titles.

While we should have multiple launch titles, there is one idea I've had for as long as I can remember: A sequel to Super Mario All-Stars, a Mario compilation for the Super Nintendo from 1993. Naturally, the long-awaited sequel would be a collection of games that have been released since then, including the great 3D Mario games of an era gone-by, all digitally remastered into stunning, eye-gouging HD. Even better, each game features a wide array of twists and turns, from added levels, revised levels, new enemies, new bosses, and much, much more. While much of the three-disc collection consists of remakes, they almost seem to be new games due to the sheer amount of changes. Ported titles from the various DS devices would be completely changed due to the lack of touchscreen! To save memory space, I've omitted both Super Mario Galaxy titles in addition to all other Mario titles for the Wii and Wii U. Personally, I feel as if many would much rather see older titles remade for the modern generation. Never fear! Excluded titles will be featured in our console's Virtual Console store. I will go into further detail on each featured remake at a later time.

Super Mario All-Stars II

Disc One:

1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
2. Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)
3. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
4. Super Mario World (SNES)
5. Super Mario World 2 (SNES)
6. Donkey Kong (Arcade; Unlockable)
7. Donkey Kong Jr. (Arcade; Unlockable)
8. Mario Bros. (Arcade; Unlockable)

Disc Two:

1. Super Mario 64 (N64)
2. Yoshi's Story (N64)
3. Luigi's Mansion (GCN)
4. Super Mario Sunshine (GCN)
5. Super Wario 64 (Original; Unlockable)

Disc Three:

1. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
2. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
3. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)
4. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS; Unlockable)
5. Yoshi's New Island (3DS; Unlockable)

Again, I'll dive into each title individually at a later time.

Anyone else have any ideas for the Nintendo Revolution? Feel free to share!

I'm a huge retrogaming nerd, so I'm all in favor of anything that brings back the glory days. Heck, they could make the next Nintendo console use cartridges and wired controllers with two buttons and I would be ecstatic. Granted, I doubt that this is a winning strategy for Nintendo, but I wonder... the New Super Marios Bros series has been selling tremendously better than the 3D Marios I adore like Galaxy and 64, so your All-stars idea is probably a winner, even if I would rather just download the classics on Virtual Console (ah the Super Mario World theme song... *tear*). Speaking of Virtual Console, whatever Nintendo comes up with for their next console ought to have a vast VC library available, as that was bar none the best part of the original Wii for me.

It would also be nice to launch with a high-resolution, gimmick-free Zelda (no birds, boats, wolves, or the love of all things holy, trains!), but I'm not holding my breath.

This is possibly very off-topic, but as a Nintendo and Disney fanboy, I was extremely disappointed that Universal got the theme park rights to Nintendo. I've been dreaming about a Nintendo theme park for years (it's such an obvious fit), and the thought of Universal making a Nintendo-themed kiddie-version of Springfield or yet another Hanna-Barbera-style simulator ride makes me sick to my stomach. Am I being paranoid here?

I'm also one for a return to the days of cartridges and wires, even though a good percentage of today's audience would rather not...I have an N64 hooked up in my room, but sadly, nothing that predates that system exists in my household. :(

I actually had a dream about my Super Mario All-Stars II idea (cheesy, right?) and I've decided to make some alterations to it once I go into further detail about each ported title. I can assure you that for Disc One at least, their 8-bit and 16-bit versions would be accessible features.

I would also love a Zelda game with no gimmick (despite the fact that Majora's Mask is my all-time favorite game). One thing that has also been discussed in the past is an innovative Mario game in lieu of Super Mario 64. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World were great followups to 64, but neither really captured the same groundbreaking manner of 64. I think one way to accomplish this is making an open world 3D Mario game. Can you imagine not being confined to one area and just being able to explore this giant Mushroom World?

Another thing....Nintendo could use a new IP. While the classic characters are always going to be on top, it may be time to introduce a few new original games into the mix.

A great launch title could be Pikmin 4, as it's already in the works. I actually think using cartridges is a good idea, cords, not so much. Cartridges are so much easier to use, and don't scratch.

I had an idea for several Disney titles to be included here. Lately, there had been remakes of the DuckTales game for the NES and Castle of Illusion for the Sega Genesis. For the Nintendo Revolution, there would be more remakes of old Disney games. Actually, they would be more than just remakes, they would in fact they would be completely new versions.

One of these games is a remake of "Mickey Mania". To give you an idea of how it would look, here are some comparisons with the old game:

But that's only the beginning. There would be brand-new levels themed to other Mickey cartoons. In the Sega Genesis/CD version of the game, there is a bonus level themed to "The Band Concert" (namely, the whirlwind). This would no longer be a bonus level, but an actual level in the game. Chronologically, this would come after "The Mad Doctor". There will then be levels themed to two other Mickey cartoons. One is "Thru the Mirror", which will come before "Moose Hunters". Then after "Lonesome Ghosts", there will now be a level themed to "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". All told, there will now be not just 6 1/2 levels in the game, but nine:

1. Steamboat Willie (1928)
2. The Mad Doctor (1933)
3. The Band Concert (1935)
4. Thru the Mirror (1936)
5. Moose Hunters (1937)
6. Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
7. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1940)
8. Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947)
9. The Prince and the Pauper (1990)

I will tell you the other ideas of mine next time. Until then, what do you think so far?

Never played Mickey Mania but this HD-ification looks pretty good. Is this your personal artwork?

While Mickey Mania has 9 should it include the Brave Little Tailor, Runaway Brain, one of the shorts from the Mickey Mouse series, and Get A Horse? As with his look should it be the same look or change his look to this?

I'm all for the Mickey game, as well as a sequel to Mario Maker. I did not include Mario Maker in All-Stars 2 because a potential sequel would easily cover its absence. I know my biggest idea so far is a collection of remakes, haha, but I definitely want us to come up with some completely original material as well. I've always thought that Nintendo should come up with a new IP themed around toys...not Toy Story, but sentient toys going on adventures. Just a thought.

Another thought: a 3D Pokemon game. Imagine exploring an expansive over-world in glorious 3D-HD, encountering trainers and Pokemon, and becoming the very best like no one ever was. Just to keep us updated on our ideas so far:

1. New Console: Nintendo Revolution; HD High-Tech Console that possibly utilizes modernized cartridges in place of the typical discs. Wireless controllers will most likely be utilized, touchscreen-free. I think that many of the Wii U's features should be carried over, including Miis, YouTube, Netflix, an Internet Explorer, Virtual Console, and so on. It wouldn't hurt to include a Blu-ray player either, better yet compatibility with the Wii and Wii U.
2. Super Mario All-Stars II (Three-Disc Collection of Classic Mario Titles Remastered)
3. The Legend of Zelda: Non-Gimmicky Adventure
4. Super Smash Bros. Revolution
5. Open World Mario Game (Super Mario Revolution?)
6. Pikmin 4
7. Mickey Mania Remake
8. Super Mario Maker 2
9. Original Nintendo IP
10. Nintendo Purchases Rare Back

I know it's A LOT of first-party titles (excluding Mickey), but can you imagine how awesome this would be for a roster of launch titles? That's eight equally epic games, not to mention however many third-party titles would also be released, especially if Rare is brought back into the picture. This could prospectively create a whole new generation of "retro-gamers."

-Modernized GCN Controller would be the best
-Mii's are a must
-All the apps you listed would be great
-Definately add a Bluray player, I heard its actually a selling point for the PS4
-I think Wii Compatibility is a bit much, but Wii U compatibility is necessary. Also, I don't think there should be a Wii U Menu (Like the Wii Menu on Wii U) But instead more like the Wii's compatibility with the GameCube
-Could this console be the rumored handheld/console combination?

2. Super Mario All-Stars II (Three-Disc Collection of Classic Mario Titles Remastered)
-Sounds good, but I think we should work on the name, as the original SMAS came out a very long time ago

3. The Legend of Zelda: Non-Gimmicky Adventure
-Yes!

4. Super Smash Bros. Revolution
-I'd like to start working on the roster for this

5. Open World Mario Game (Super Mario Revolution?)
-This needs to be very open world, like Sunshine, but without a gimmick

6. Pikmin 4
-I think we should have a subtitle, Nintendo doesn't have 4's

7. Mickey Mania Remake
-Never played the original, but it seems fun

8. Super Mario Maker 2
-We could do so much with this, great stuff!

9. Original Nintendo IP
-I love new IP!

10. Nintendo Purchases Rare Back
-Banjo Kazooie 3? (Technically there have been three, but I'm sure they would disown Nuts and Bolts if it was bought back)

A sequel to Splatoon, and which games would be Amiibo compatible if the Nintendo Revolution uses Amiibos?
Splatoon needs a sequel. I would assume they would add Amiibo functionality to everything, as they're pretty much doing that with Wii U games. I feel that they mostly would just reprint the current lines, with new lines for popular francises (Mario, Zelda, Pokemon)
