Night Photos - Help

First of all, I have an Olympus Stylus 850SW. It has "night scene", "night portrait" and "fireworks" photo options in its scene settings and I can adjust exposure from -2.0 to +2.0. I also have some kind of macro setting.

My night photos really suck.

Any tips or tricks???

Much thanks!

Can you post some samples so we can see what went wrong?

Generally, you need some kind of support - like a tripod, or a trash can. The exposure time will be longer than you can hand hold. No flash.

Gorillapods are great for portable use

I'll definitely take a look for one of those flexible tripods. Thanks Steve!

For hand held pictures, they are quite good. There is a little bit of blur, but that's to be expected without a tripod or gorilla pod.

When taking a night picture without a tripod, i will use a combination of the following tips.
1. lean against something
2. stop breathing. breathing causes shake
3. hold your arms close to your body.
4. always have both hands on the camera
5. do not move until you hear the shutter completely close.

I got some incredible night/fireworks shots with my old Olympus Stylus 1010, considering they were all handheld with no support. The only thing I really changed was moving the ISO setting up to 800. Any more than that and they were too noisy, any less and they were too blurry. Does your model offer that?

Not that these are spectacular, but for a point and shoot with no support, I'm happy with them. Of course, I got some real duds too, but the more photos you take, the more likely you'll get some good ones =)
