The leaders of all of the EU nations, the UK, Japan and Canada also escalated this. The credit is shared. In Pfizer’s case Germany directly funded their partner BioNTech‘s research so Germany maybe deserves a little more credit than the rest of the nations who just agreed to buy the vaccine if it worked out.

Somehow, I can't imagine Angela Merkel complaining to the press that she doesn't get enough credit for her role in creating these vaccines... or a bunch of CDU/CSU supporters complaining of the same.
