New Tinkerbell System in place at DL

I read this over at miceage and I had to laugh at the sentence I highlighted. Just the visual picture in my head of poor Tinkerbell doing a ...well..you can read it.

A Tree Grows in Fantasyland

On the other side of Fantasyland a new tree recently sprouted between the Village Haus and Big Thunder Mountain. Sharp eyed visitors will notice that this new, and very green, tree is in the exact location of the old tower that Tinker bell's cable was mysteriously attached to.

While this new tree is related to Tinker bell, she won't be landing there. Rather, the tree will camouflage the elaborate system of cables, winches and pulleys that will allow Tinker bell to do a dramatically more elaborate presentation in the new 50th fireworks show.

There is a nearly identical setup of cables, pulleys and electric motors newly installed in the upper reaches of the Matterhorn, and this setup will enable Tink to recreate the swooping and dipping flight pattern she displayed during the opening credits of the Wonderful World of Color television program.

Instead of making a quick, gravity powered one-way trip down the cable and smashing into an old mattress held by two burly guys, Tink will now be lowered slowly on to the roof of the Snow White ride building when her portion of the fireworks show is over. A 45 year chapter in Disneyland history has apparently come to an end now that Tink no longer will slam head first into the mattress at the top of the old tower, but it's hoped the new effect will be much more impressive to watch from Main Street.

LMAO! It sounds really lame the way they describe it.. lowering her slowly onto the roof? How dramatic! I sure hope it actually looks better than that.

Actually, I think I'd rather see a Tinkerbell Extreme version. I'd pay money to see her go down the rope through flaming hoops, over a tank of jumping sharks, dodging arrows shot at her, AND THEN slam head first into the mattress. Now that's entertainment!! :sohappy:

Wasn't that the same effect with the Believe firework show. The part with the light representing Tink. It flew around the castle and lowered down slowly. Correct me if I am wrong.

I don't recall her being lowered down slowly, no. It was a light that flitted around behind the castle, and then winked out, I think. It's been awhile since I've seen it.

I had the impression that this new effect was doing it with a real person. If they're lowering her slowly onto a rooftop, it'll just look really, er... unmagical, I think. Too obvious.

Yeah I know it was a light before, but the new effect just sounds like the same effect being done on a larger scale (with a person). That is what I meant.

I know. I'm saying it's easy to be discreet when you're lowering something as small as a light after the part is finished... when they're lowering a person like that, it's pretty obvious.

it will be hidden out of view. I tend to think this would look no more ridiculous than having Tink slam into a mattress at full speed. Generally speaking, if you are not snooping around trying to see things, you won't see them--you usually have to put effort into seeing how they make the magic.

Furthermore, they are probably under the assumption that instead of being fixated on Tink being lowered by crane, you will actually be watching the fireworks going on at the time...don't people go to the fireworks for the...fireworks?

True... but I really think it depends which rooftops they'll lower her onto. If they're talking like the Snow White/Peter Pan areas (or thereabouts) it will be prety hard to miss, even if you're watching the fireworks. And if you're on the Fantasyland side during the fireworks... ugh.

As I said, maybe this report just does a really bad job explaining it, but the way I picture it based on this article is pretty pathetic.

I can relate to that having flown in a production of Scrooge as the ghost of Jacob Marley. Except there was no mattress and just the side walls of the Bristol Hippodrome wings.

To stop me smacking into said wall on my rapid exit a rope was hung vertically from the fly tower that I had to grab, if I missed it would have caused me to splat against the wall then through pendulum action swing back onto stage for an impromptu encore!

Unfortunately on opening night due to a technical hitch I ended up flying off backwards and could not see the rope. Fortunately I spread my arms wide, hit the rope with one, arm which slowed me enough to not hit the wall and I was able to grab it on the return swing to stop me going back on stage.

Slamming into the mattress?? LOL I wonder how the first flying tinkerbell did it! Ya'll know she was a 70 year old circus performer, right? (Yes, that is a fact. I am not kidding).

As far as I know that has always been the method of decelleration - wham into a mattress. Maybe not the best solution but better then letting her fly into the RoA - even tho that would look cool!
