New Rumor

We are at The World until Mon Dec 8th, latest rumor we heard as we toured BLT (Bought 100 points)

(So let the experts start all there negative posts and the flaming start now !This should get them all riled up.)

This is a long term rumor a CM has stated thet the long term plan before the Credit Crunch, is after the BLT is completed is that they were going to knock down The Contemporary (it's sinking and the modular units are jammed inside the building) even though they have recently remodeled it, there seems to be structural problems that are just to costly to repair. They claim another Tower will be built opposite the BLT with a round building in the middle, this will make it look like Mickey from the air.

Take it for what it's worth and I'm sure the experts on board will chime in, just remember I'm the messenger, just the person sending the rumor on. (Now let the experts all chime in!)

On a side note, only 1 elevator shaft has been running on TOT for 3 days now. Left hand side doors are open all day.

I wouldnt be surrprised. I think CR is not the most attractively themed. It may have been innovative when it 1st opened but now.. blah.

We stayed there last year, although its remodeled, the building just seems so old. Now the Concourse is louder than ever with the food court, it seems to fill the whole area with more noise than it did in the past.

On a side note the internet at the BCV is great, relitivly fast.

Now the weather cold, low 60's last night was hi 30's, suppose to warm up by weeks end.

What? - An ACTUAL rumor? - in the News/Rumors Section? - Not a thread about the decline of WDW? - Can this really be happening?

I tend not to believe the rumor either, however, it does have feasibility. If they next demo the south garden view rooms and and build there they will have essentially replaced all of the rooms in CR should they want to demo it.

That being said, Disney isn't adding capacity anywhere and highly doubt they'd want to do so at the deluxe level. Also, the care that would have to happen to work around an active monorail line is interesting. My guess is if this happens, the monorail no longer goes through the hotel but is a station outside of it, which would suck.

I say possible, but unlikely.

I know that there had been structural issues with the Contemporary from almost the beginning. A family friend who happens to be a structural engineer predicted about a year ago that the building would likely have to be taken down by 2015 unless they were able to somehow re-pour an entirely new base about 20 feet deeper into the ground. I have no way of knowing how that accurate that statement is.

I'm not sure what steps Disney has taken in the past to reenforce the Contemporary. I do know that the building has sunk slightly over the years. It doesn't seem like a lot but settling on a structure of that size can cause a lot of damage very quickly, over night even.

However, I doubt Disney would consider demolishing it unless it was beyond repair. They wouldn't still be using the building if it was unsafe, imagine the PR disaster if something happened.

Just my opinion: It will eventually have to be taken down because of how it was built ... but it could be in 2 years or 50 years.

Oh it's declining don't worry about that......No tree lighting at Epcot nightly.......no tree in Magic Kingdom until after parade taping (use to be over near Rose Garden until then)A host of other small things missing since last years trip. (Week after Thanksgiving every year) Very small suttle cutbacks have been noticed, sign of things to come I can imagine. Our magic express driver stated that they use to move 25000 people a day now its down to 15000 to 18000.

It's just a nice change from the gloom and doom.

The building's drawer rooms were made to come out so they can easily be remodeled or refurbished, but settling did occur in the structure and they are now stuck in place. Whether the building is sinking or not, its been there almost 40 years, so if anything I'd think the sinking would slow over time as it settled. It wouldn't surprise me if they did decide to demolish it. I don't see it happening since it is still a really popular resort, they just spent a ton refurbishing the rooms as well as a ton redoing the restaurants and shop area in the concourse.

I like the rumor though. Make another giant hidden Mickey, since they destroyed the one at MGM.

Re gardless of any future doom and gloom, and small declining things, I still love it though, a bad day here ( which at 60 degrees) is still better than a good day at home! Crowds have been light, just hangin at the room until we go out later is even better than bein home.......We are on the middle of our trip day 4, 4 to go, a nice restful day in the middle of our trip!

Thanks for the information and providing an interesting and really fresh rumor to banter around.

I'll be sure to ask about it in January when we do our BLT sales tour.

On a funny side note, we all abbreviate it to BLT, we were discussing BLT at the Rose N Crown , when an older gentlemen next to us must have heard us, he asked the bartender if they had a Bacon lettuce & tomato sandwich that everyone is talking about. We had quite a laugh. :ROFLOL: The bartender Carl, told him what BLT meant, the old gent had quite a laugh also.

I think this comment needs to be brought out of mothballs....

SALT!!!!!

Ok, now that I got that out of my system....

I can totally see settling occurring. I also think that they've invested far too much capital in the Contemporary lately to even think of leveling it anytime soon. If there is indeed a problem, I wonder what solution can be thought of before the problem gets any bigger.

Of course, park CM rumors are always subject to extra scrutiny. ;)
