New POTC Boat issues

We rode a couple of weeks ago, and it looked like they were all of the newer (leaky) boats. We got stuck right before the drop into the battle scene with two or three boats ahead of us and at least a couple that backed up behind us before they were able to restart the system and get us moving again.

Consequently, we spoke with a CM that worked the ride for a while and was there when the new boats went in. For what it's worth, he said that the new boats were supposedly lighter and rode higher in the water originally, and so they decided to cut holes in the bottom to try and make them sink a little, only that caused them to start taking on water, and the whole thing was just a big debacle. I'm not sure how reliable the CM was, but the story seemed to fit.

So what exactly was wrong with the boats that were working fine? Why was there a need for replacement?

They wear themselves - take damage, etc

It's my understanding the new boats were built of similar materials used for the newer iasw boats used at Disneyland. When those boats were introduced, they stood out noticeable that they seemed constructed of formed plastic. The new materials really stood out.

"So they decided to cut holes in the bottom to try to make them sink a little"....

Hmmmmm, I'm going to make an assumption that doesn't have to be obviously stated...

I know, you don't have to say it. Regardless if you believe it or not, the boats are more problematic than they were before and they take on water in the floor and seem to get stuck more frequently, at least from my experiences.

Or maybe they can reimagine the attraction to whats being built in Shanghai
You should probably wait and see what Shanghai's is even like before hoping such a thing. There have been rumors (which may or may not be true) that Shanghai's version is going to be considerably lighter on physical sets and animatronics than other POTC versions, instead relying more heavily on video screens instead. I don't know how true those rumors are, but i likely wouldn't wish such changes on WDW even though we did end up with a downgraded rendition of the Disneyland original (and i'm guessing Disneyland and Disneyland Paris fans also wouldn't be very happy if their better versions of the ride underwent such changes either).

Isn't the shanghai version suppose to be more akin to splash mountain that the regular pirates ride we r used to seeing?

I'm assuming you're referring to the more thrilling looking version we saw in concept art originally intended for Hong Kong Disneyland (designed by ex-imagineer Tim Delaney). The pirate mountain type ride with a big Splash Mountain drop, awesome looking thing-

I believe it has been stated that this is NOT the ride Shanghai is getting. Rumors during the past couple of years has said it'll be different and probably will use a lot of video elements. Models and art for Shanghai in the POTC area seem to indicate it's not going to have any outdoors parts, so i wouldn't take anything from this art to be what the ride will actually be like.

I rode Friday with two friends the boat was full with two big guys on one side of the boat (they were not huge just adult men) and when we were going around the corners twice I thought the boat was going to sink. We took on water both times. I have ridden tons of times but was actually scared.

Oh I hear ya! My fiancée --- "WE'RE SINKING!! WE'RE SINKING!!" Me --- "stfu" starting to think she may be right!

If a boat of fatties enough actually sunk I would find it hysterical. Sorry but I would. Call the salvage company we have to get a sunken POTC boat out in the 2 foot deep main channel. With Disney's over the top safety stuff it might take 12 hours to safely get the people off the boat and on to dry land.

They could probably drain the whole ride faster than 12 hours and the "stranded" passengers could just walk out on the dry "riverbed". Also, it looks like the holes they drilled were drilled in the wrong place. If you know what I mean.
