New Orlando Theme Park

According to thedisneyblog.com a group from Baker Leisure Group is looking to open a theme park off i-4 with its primary focus being rollercoasters and thrill rides.

Will disney respond by opening up their own rollercoaster kingdom first like they did when they found out uni was going to open up a studio? I really do wonder, I mean I know that their primary focus should be on fixing what they have, but do you think mickey is just going to let someone come into his town and build a park to take away some of his money from the teens and twenty somethings looking for thrills?

When the same thing has happened in the past, IOA in particular, Disney had to do nothing. I hope I am wrong but a purely thrills park does not really seem to pull form the same demo that Disney goes after.

Don't really see this happening. If it does get approved, it is going to be rather small, 70 acres and Disney will do the same thing they did with the opening of Harry Potter....NOTHING.

hmm

I doubt that. To open a true rollercoaster park like six flags or cedar point it will be very expensive. Top of the line coasters can go for like $20 million each . small er ones like $1 to 10 million. The company building the park would have to have a lot of money and be un ique given where they are building it.

Roller coaster park off I-4? How did that work out for Circus World?
Boardwalk and Baseball?

. . . nothing to see here . . . move along . . . :ROFLOL:

It would be more competition for Universal than for WDW. But more likely it would just provide more work for bankruptcy lawyers like Hard Rock Park did.

Looking at Baker they seem mostly to be management, consultancy and planning. They don't look like a capital investment group at all. One has to wonder if they aren't representing larger interests somewhere?

Per the story, they are.

The Baker Leisure Group, which specializes in building theme parks, is helping a group of investors with the project to build “The Orlando Thrill Park.”

I think IOA is probably the nearest competitor. But, it does seem like Orlando could use something like this; a mid-market attraction that doesn't necessarily have to be a days-long destination, but can provide a draw for the teen/young adult segment in family trips.

I think it is more troublesome news for your little fun parks and Old Town type destinations rather than your major theme parks such as Disney, Universal or even Busch Parks.

Fun Spot USA and such should be nervous if anyone.

I still don't see a spot large enough near Prime. There's a rectangular plot just south of Festival Bay but it doesn't look large enough. I call shennanagins.

It will never happen. It is too expensive to open a brand new thrill park.
Even Six Flags just buys existing parks and put there name on them.

Why would Disney want to respond? This park couldn't possibly hurt their bottom line, and it would be completely reactionary.

For better or worse, Disney has not been overly reactionary to the Orlando theme park market and does things in their own time (with the notable exception of the Universal/MGM park building).

More than that now even.

These types of parks have a hard enough time when they are not near the big boys in Orlando. People are not going to waste time in Orlando to do something they can do for less money and closer to home.
