New Ideas for DTD?

I for one would love to see the old Virgin Mega store turned into the world's first Marvel Mega store. Then follow this up by updating and converting Disney Quest into Marvel Quest. Any thoughts?

Disney Quest is the fine the way it is IMO. I lilke the Marvel Mega Store to be a giant comic store. Sort of where people can trade in their old comics for money and where meet and greets can be.

They should also make a comic strip cafe. But DtD needs less restaurant and more entertainment.

I would like to see Eddie Sotto redo it, this is what he said he would do in his thread.

Quote Eddie Sotto: I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "mess". I have heard that many stores have gone away leaving some gaps and know Pleasure Island is gone. I'm not aware of what their new plans are, so it's hard to say.

To me, the key thing is to be as unique as possible and try to give people an experience they could only get at Disney. I was never comfortable with Pleasure Island as sometimes I saw things happening there that if a family stumbled into that area they would be pretty offended. I think there is a way to provide "grown up" entertainment, but do it in a way that would not detract from the Disney image. The "Adventurers Club" was a good example of that.

It's probably a good idea to give people a relief from the characters and provide a different tone of entertainment at Downtown. But I would hate to see more typical chain restaurants in that space. It always irks me to see chains that poorly copy Disney (like the Rainforest) being on the property with low rent AA's, cheesy craftsmanship, bad food and all. Same for Planet Hollywood. Such bad imitation when Disney invented theming! Yes. They make lots of cash, I know. My answer is, if that is so, make them do a bit better job or do it for them. Set the standard for what theming should be on your own property. If they did bring in familiar brands then they should reinvent that particular store any way that could only be at Disney so the guest would go home telling their friends. If there was a Starbucks, it would have to be the Starbucks that has a glass ceiling of coffee beans that pour through the tubes down into the grinding machines and you would have a far superior coffee experience than they have ever done anywhere. Each store should have a "wow" factor. It would also be nice to do something entirely unique as you have things like the "Empress Lily" to work with. I always wondered why things like the Fantasia miniature golf course were not incorporated into the downtown experience, but done in a fun, urban way like on a rooftop. Great malls have things to look at while you're shopping. It's kind of a mix of retail, fun food, and people having a good time.

Themed shopping centers, like "The Grove" in Los Angeles are doing this and succeeding in the process. So I would take a few lessons from these successful models, not that they are the same, but there are some elements that probably work in Orlando. As you can see I really don't know much about the current situation, but this would be my instinct.

I will post the one idea I have always wished would be incorporated into Downtown Disney -- the Disney Parks Museum. Any true "downtown" has a museum or two, and (Lady Di's temporary wedding dress exhibit aside), DtD does not.

The Disney Parks Museum would have a lot of history to draw upon, including travelling exhibits that have gone to various museums over the years. Also, I would love a theater showing old parks presentations -- Walt Disney Story, Magic Journeys, Captain EO, the original pre-ride video from the Living Seas, the huge screen projection used in Horizons, the Monster Sound Show, Making of Me, you get the idea. Nothing that would require new material of course. A scaled down circlevision (if you could scale it down) could show American the Beautiful, Timekeeper (sans AA), the old versions of O Canada and Wonders of China (perhaps with an explanation of how the technology and updating those films works).

There would be a room with a sample ride vehicle from every defunct attraction (maybe they'd be some of the seats in the theater). A place to watch old Parks commercials, example floats from the parades over the years, props from now-dead attractions (ROBOT BUTLER). And of course, true exhibits on the design of the parks, rides, etc. The store would of course feature retro shirts, attraction posters, replica tickets. You get the idea.

It would have a separate admission charge, or be one of the "& more" options. Wouldn't cost all that much to run, and would free up space in DHS (parts of One Man's Dream), but then again, while it'd be a big hit with people like those who hang out on Disney internet message boards, I'm not sure it would have a broad enough appeal to justify the fairly large building it would require.

i agree, some of the grove concepts could apply. i enjoy that they have theatre & improv mixed in with the restaurants & shopping. i think with cirque being there, theatre still has a good foot in the door. disney could do some more theatre work in dtd, especially with so many buildings in place to support a showhouse.

I have said something like this somewhere on this forum, can't tell you where as I don't remember and it wasn't as detailed as yours. However, I agree that there should be a Disney Museum or Parks Museum. Put it in the old Virgin Mega Store.

More theatre is also an excellent idea, travelling shows, or have the Disney broadway shows tour between the parks, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King etc. Would definately bring people to DTD, have a broadway south in WDW.

Ah!
A Disney museum would be brilliant.

I mentioned something like this months ago, before the Diana exhibiton. And thet could have a store that sells retro merchandise.

I like this idea at DtD or even elsewhere on property. It would be a nice addition for the resort's 50th. I detailed such an "attraction" or parklet on my blog, titled Preserving the Magic. If you've ever been to Hershey, PA and Hershey's Chocolate world, they have a history center and museum of sorts with a variety of attractions and presentations about Hershey. Not that I think Disney should necessarily copy Hershey, but they should look at the concept and try to do something similar.

It would have a separate admission charge, or be one of the "& more" options.

I like the "& more" option, but I might also suggest free admission to resort guests, and a nominal charge of less than $5 for non-resort guests.

Another idea would be to have a real comedy or magic club with regular touring acts.

BEST IDEA EVER...especially for a declining DTD
