Interesting news article about the resulting settlement:

They sure do a good job at detecting sunglasses cases and causing my wife to get VERY upset at Disney Springs security for treating her like s terrorist and barking instructions like they are actually law enforcement officers.

After one trip I learned to hold my sunglasses case WAY out in front of me to avoid getting unnecessarily pulled over to inspect my string bag containing... a water bottle and maybe a paper park map for an intense, detailed inspection 🙄

Well they are former law enforcement/military.
Well they don't have the authority that they act like they do no matter what their former life was. I've had worse experiences with Disney security than I have with the TSA.

I've never been rudely barked at by the TSA. There have been times when they were stern but there is a difference between stern and rude. I've had several interactions with Disney security where they are unnecessarily rude.

Since 99.9% of the time the alert isn't a weapon or other prohibited item the default attitude should be friendly and apologetic not rude and demanding.

The whole thing is a CYA show so that if, God forbid, there was an attack of some kind they can defend the lawsuits saying that they took reasonable preventative action to prevent it.

Agreed on all counts. They treat me like a terrorist over sunscreen and a granola bar.

Do you have any data about how effective INTRUSIVE metal detectors are???

That's something I think we'd all rather avoid on our way into a theme park...
I think it depends on the experience, skills and training of the equipment operator. If they're attractive and use lube it can be quite reasonable and keep everyone safe.

I’m ok with them hassling me over trivial things if means a more secure park, the world is a different place, can’t be too naïve and think everyone has the best of intentions. Just remember the pulse nightclub shooter was targeting/casing DS first.

Unfortunately all it takes is one lousy Security CM to ruin it for the rest. The majority are really professional and friendly and don't treat you like you're being booked.

I had been constantly getting flagged for additional screening despite not carrying any bags, and inevitably I got that CM who had zero guest interaction skills. Best course of action is to not engage or start anything at the security checkpoint, but just get their name and location and time of when you interacted with them and contact guest services either in person or via email if you feel that the interaction was not up to standard.

Eventually a very friendly CM recommended that I take my phone and AirPods out of my pocket and hold it in front of me while walking through. Problem solved.

AirPods?

I could hear you listening to Splash Mountain on TBA. Just thought you ought to know.

I do agree that it's not nearly all of the personnel that act like this. I have, however, had several similar experiences since the Evolv scanners were rolled out at different parks and at Disney Springs.

When they treat me rudely I just don't respond verbally and give them an annoyed look. When they have done it to my wife she snaps at them and talks back to them. Not only is there no reason for them to be rude but a skinny, middle aged female not wearing any bulky clothing and not carrying a bag is pretty much the bottom of the list demographic for somebody that is trying to cause trouble and bring a dangerous item through security.

Your advice to contact guest services is good advice. Maybe if they get feedback they can provide training to the specific CMs that need it.

If the shooter had a strong desire to attack DS, the security screening wouldn't have stopped him. He could have just walked up and started shooting at the checkpoint and then walked right through and done whatever he wanted until law enforcement was able to reach his location.

I don't think everyone has the best of intensions but I'm also realistic and know that the security at Disney has a very limited efficacy. The most secure park is MK since the screening occurs so far from the entrance. If somebody shot their way through a checkpoint they'd have a hard time getting into the park before being arrested or taken out by law enforcement.

Aviation security is very effective because the goal is to keep people from hijacking or bring down planes. It doesn't prevent somebody from killing people in the airport terminal.

To me, the best thing that Disney security does is act as a deterrent so people who aren't planning an attack are a lot less likely to carry a weapon into a park and end up using it to settle an argument when somebody is pushing their way through a line to join their party that is 30 minutes ahead of them in the queue.
A thorough check, however, need not be accompanied by rude comments.
Exactly. They can be polite and request that you go to the screening table in a friendly tone of voice and say things like "this won't take long" or similar to keep the situation from feeling stressful. Even saying something like "I have to screen everybody when the scanner gives an alert" so that you feel less targeted.
