New Disney Princesses?

How do you feel about new Disney characters being added to the lineup? The newer princesses are Merida, Tiana, and Rapunzel. In 2014, I know that Anna and Elsa from Frozen will be officially added.

I personally don't really want new additions. It was perfect, classic, and simple before. The lineup will be much too long soon if they keep making new movies and adding every female protagonist as a princess. It just doesn't fit for me. Half are modern, the other half from years ago. But, what do I know?

What do you think?

I for one liked it when it was only focused on 3 Princesses Snow White, Cinderella & Aurora (And also toss Alice in the mix) in the earlier years of the park. It was only time until they found their marketing stratagem in 1989...But, I mean look at this little skit from the WDW 15th anniversary..

This is not bad..It makes the Princesses more like everyday characters and not being all Royal, Magical, and blah blah blah..They are humans too. And that's why I liked this.

The only thing that is going to be confusing is Elsa..She's a queen not a Princess. Why technically call her a Princess when she becomes a Queen 15 mins into the movie?

You start using logic when it comes to Disney Princesses, you lose quickly. Why do they show Rapunzel nearly always with her long blonde hair? It's gone by the end of the movie and will never grow back like that again.
How does Ariel get legs and lose them depending on where she is in the parks?
Why is Mulan a princess anyway? Did I miss something? She's the daughter of a soldier.

Anyway, personally, I like all of the new princesses. It could also have to do with having young daughters, so those movies are on rotation a lot, but I think they are good additions to "the lineup".

They don't throw in every female character. Alice, Wendy, Esmeralda, and Megara are all prime examples of characters who aren't in the official line-up. Heck, Kida and Eilowny are ACTUAL princesses and they're not included. Similarly, next year's Big Hero 6 will feature at least two female characters on the team, and it's unlikely either will get inducted. Maybe Honey Lemon, but Gogo Tomago doesn't seem like she'd fit.

Well, according to the Disney Wiki, one of the qualifications is something about displaying great heroism. After all, when the Huns invaded, Mulan went out and took care o' bidness. You don't see many other Princesses blowing folks up. The only female character who measures up to Mulan in terms of butt-kicking is Kida, who will straight up shank you if you try anything funny.

.....I thought that they just 'rolled out' new ones in conjunction with the whole Disney Magic / Next Generation thing... I think they are called "Greederella"...and her sister, "Indifferentia".

I think Merida could too. I've always been impressed that when Mordu first shows up in that cave, she puts three fast arrows right in his head. He of course shakes it off and that causes her to run, otherwise it would have been a short movie, but still, her first reaction was to go all Hawkeye/Green Arrow on him.

Yeah, Merida has got spunk. Of course, if they got into a fight, I'd probably have to give the edge to Mulan. She is also trained in archery, and when the arrows run out, Mulan has definitely got the edge in melee combat.

I think Merida, Elsa and Anna are awesome, so I'm glad to see them added. I tried to get a picture with Merida again last weekend, but the line was always too long.

I got mine!

Yeah, Merida is very cool. Granted, there's a bit of a bias on my part, as I've always been a sucker for girls with Scottish accents (Sheena Easton. Rrrraawwrrr.)

I just find it unnecessary in a way. What was wrong with the lineup before?
Well I'm sure people thought the same during the Renaissance (Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas). But it seems when a generation grows up with these newer movies, the characters must be added to the line. For example, your avatar is Pocahontas and you seem to like the lineup pre-Tiana. For children today, in say ten or fifteen years, they will be on here with a Rapunzel avatar complaining how they didn't think anything was wrong say pre-Princess and the Pea ( ). It's all relative to the generations and marketing to those generations, IMO.

Yes, great point. :) My daughter loves the new princesses, and you're absolutely right. The marketing needs to be relevant. It's just that for somebody older, like me, I grew up with the older princesses, so that's what I love.

YOU ALL ARE LOOKING AT IT AS ADULTS. THE CHILDREN LIKE THE DIFFERENT "PRINCESSES". SO WDW HAS WAYS FOR THE GIRLS/BOYS TO GET THEIR FAVORITE PRINCESS OUTFITS, ETC... IT IS ABOUT KEEPING UP WITH THE CHILDREN. CHILDREN TODAYARE NOT ABOUT SNOW WHITE LIKE THEY ARE ABOUT THE NEW HEROINES.
FOCUSING ON THE OLD ONES LEAVES YOU AND THE OPTIONS IN THE PAST NOT ON THE HERE AND NOW.
BOYS WANT CAPT. JACK MORE NOW NOT PETER PAN THE GIRLS WANT AREIL NOW AND OTHERS NOT SNOW WHITE AS MUCH.

lack of diversity for one, Its kind of ironic your icon is Pocahontas. The point is, that if you only have 3 holy trinity princesses then all the other characters seem beneath them, but by marketing them all as an entity you give kids diversity and choices to identify and relate too. As for Mulan they put her in there because she represents aspects of what princesses should aspire to be courageous etc etc. Its like the new princess ad
All of these kids deserve to be represented, not just by the original trio!

Indeed. I'm surprised there hasn't been a Latina Princess yet, though I've been told Esmeralda was very popular with Latina girls while she was still being marketed.

Though I do disagree with the statement that the original 3 no longer connect with kids, because I saw a lot of little girls dressed as Aurora when I was down at Disney World for Halloween.
