Beginning this week at Walt Disney World, visually impaired guests will have an additional advantage. Disney is introducing an Assistive Technology Device that guests can hold in the palm of their hand as they make their way through the parks. This device uses an interactive audio menu and allows guests to customize the information they receive, deciding if they would like such details as architectural elements in the parks or even the locations of the nearest bathrooms. It uses wireless technology to act as a GPS of the parks.

The pre-programmed device offers detailed audio descriptions for over 50 Walt Disney World attractions, increased audio for hearing impaired guests, handheld captioning for select attractions and closed captioning for pre-show areas.

Disney has previously offered options for visually and hearing impaired guests, but this new technology will combine all the services into one easy to use device. It will be available at Walt Disney World on June 27 and at Disneyland in 2011. This service is offered at no cost to guests.
