New bus app feature being tested at POFQ

After more digging....

This will be "interesting." How do I put this..... The weak link is the actual bus dispatch system. There's some insane issues with the old system and the new bus dispatch system, that's reportedly a piece of stuff. That's being tested at epcot and has caused some service issues recently.

Time 8:00AM
Hollywood Studios bus: 8:02, 8:04, 8:04, 8:07
Magic Kingdom bus: unknown, maybe never

I remember when Disney use to be cutting edge but even if they are lagging behind in the World of Tech I'm happy they are finally considering implementing this transportation phone app, just very late to the party, again.

I know... been saying this for years. But with all the great new stuff coming how can you possibly be so depressing by pointing out the bigger picture???

Maybe in 10 years Disney will add the ability to request a bus pick you up from the app.. you know.. like anyone can do today via Uber or similar ;)

Since everyone has MagicBands, what they need to do is install the long range RFID readers at the bus stops and query who is at the stop with where they have attraction/dining reservations to get an idea how many are waiting to go to a specific destination. That way they could efficiently dispatch busses to those waiting the longest and the largest crowds. I was at Riverside this weekend and there were 2 busses going to the Studios each not even a quarter full, all while there were enough people waiting to fill up 3 busses to the MK.

Been covered before.. back when everyone painted RFID as evil.. and why bother... etc

But your system is problematic... Just KISS and have people tap their band against a sign when they walk up to the bus stop to where they want to go. Then use the long range readers to tell if the people are still there after a bus leaves.

Somewhere in bus was dispatched from Magic Kingdom and it likely went out of service for various reasons. That really doesn't matter, the problem is that by removing the bus from service, the computer program on the backend that's providing the data is all FUBAR & it does not automatically roll over to the next Magic Kingdom bus.

It's been that way for years. Upper management is not interested in fixing the problem.

And thank you for illustrating exactly what the problem is.

Did i say something funny ?

Yes. You suggested that Disney was waiting for prices to come down. That's hilarious because for many years now, upper management has not been wanting to spend the money to fix the problems… because that goes against cardinal rule number one in Disney: spending money.

It's been well and illustrated with the infrastructure upgrades associated with my magic plus in the entire NexGen project that for years infrastructures been neglected especially on the information technology side. This says driven costs through the roof as they continue to throw money at the problems.

Bottom line? Management does not want to spend any money does not have to.

[COUNTDOWN=][/COUNTDOWN]Oh, excellent. So, soon I'll be able to be on my phone for my ENTIRE vacation instead of just when I'm in the parks, or trying to get restaurant reservations. Does it really matter if the bus is coming in 5 minutes or in 10 minutes? We're there on vacation, for heavens sake, just sit and enjoy the sun while you're waiting for the bus. My Magic is making a Disney trip feel a lot like work.

Breezed through all four pages so might have missed it. Do the buses have GPS?

Maybe we were lucky but we only had one long wait over race weekend. Trying to get to Drunkytown from Sports on Sunday after the run and watched four Epcot buses go right past us. Bunch of unhappy hungry runners in line with us. :)

Yes, the buses have GPS by that system is not integrated with the dispatch system.

I got a very simple crash course in this the other day… I believe the GPS mapping system they actually used to see where buses are, is a freeware program.

What system did they give you a crash course in- Meyers old or the new one decided on when Wolber was sent in to evaluate both the status quo, indifferent staff along with the antiquated system??? There is a lot of butt covering here now that Wolber exposed the shortcomings that were rampant with transportation.

There was a reason why Meyers was shown the door and likely others that can't or won't step it up. It is my understanding that there will be little tolerance for staff that do not embrace the new system to keep these buses on schedule and don't react when a bus falls off the grid or becomes untimely. The system is well proven in many large urban areas where they too handle major sports events, rush hours coupled with major weather events, there are not excuses for why it will not work in WDW. This is going to be fun to watch as it is implemented and as they move new staff in and out of Transportation.

Except it's rarely ever 5 minutes or 10 minutes. Believe it or not people don't like wasting their valuable time STANDING (very rarely do the park bus stops have seating) in the sun or rain waiting for a bus for an unknown amount of time.

And the new system that is being tested will fix that and more providing Disney is successful in making it mandatory that their personnel in the transportation respond. A bus will be considered out of service at the resorts if it is filled by bus stop 2 and omits 3, 4. It will go back in service once it off loads the passengers at the MK. At that point Transportation operations will decide if that bus remains to load or if it goes back or else where. A bus would be sent to start at 3, 4 where the original bus left off while the next bus scheduled will start at bus stop #1. It is a good system but it has to embraced by the fleet of personnel that have for decades marched to their own drummer. I'd look for personnel changes when a new system is being launched if it is met with resistance by the current managers, it is too important to have their own people try and thwart it. The new system to Disney is not new, it has been vetted and the bugs are long gone from the system.

I'm not sure, I wasn't told specific names other then "this is the way it is right now"

So don't use it. Just show up at the bus stop, like it has been done for years, and wait until the bus shows up that you want. Nobody is FORCING you to use it. It really is amazing how people will complain about any changes that Disney makes, even ones that are completely voluntary.

Agreed. This is a genuinely positive effort that costs money (to Disney) that will better our experience. People. Will. Complain. About. Anything.

If you look at my posting history I think you'll be hard-pressed to find me complaining about anything to do with WDW. So please think before you post something like this. And for those who say "it's voluntary, so don't complain about it", well that's ridiculous. A trip to WDW in the first place is entirely voluntary, but people still might complain about something. I happen to be of the opinion that the over-reliance on technology is ruining the Disney experience, and from what I've read I'm not alone. I was there less than a month ago and now all you see are people with their noses buried in their phones, missing anything that's goin on around them. I don't have to agree with everything Disney management does, and that does not mean I'm a complainer, it means I happen to have an opinion about something.
