Brian Wilson has announced an album interpreting songs from the films of Walt Disney. For In the Key of Disney, tracks about seducing lions, kissing mermaids and motivating dwarves will be given "the Beach Boys sound".
"The Beach Boys sound and the Disney people make a fantastic collaboration," Wilson recently told USA Today . "I tried to do justice to all their songs." The Mouse House had apparently been chasing Wilson for two years, beseeching the Beach Boys boss to reimagine favourites from The Jungle Book, Toy Story and Pocahontas. But Wilson was busy with a different reimagining – taking on unfinished songs by George Gershwin. That album was released last September.
Now, Wilson is free to invest himself in children's classics like Bare Necessities and Toy Story 3's We Belong Together. He said he tried to bring the songs' original composers "to the fore", making an instrumental medley out of songs from Snow White and pumping Dumbo's Baby Mine full of vocal harmonies. I Just Can't Wait to Be King, from the Lion King, is now a Bo Diddley rock number. Wilson also revealed that When You Wish Upon a Star, from Pinocchio, inspired one of his best-known tracks. "I heard it while I was driving my car, and I started humming a melody in my head," he said. "I went home and finished it, and it was called Surfer Girl."
In the Key Of Disney will be released on 25 October.
