Neon Lights?

Forgive me if there's a thread for this elsewhere! I did a search and wasn't able to find one.

I've noticed that WDW uses a lot of neon colors in their lighting. Sometimes it's just for accents, but other times they light up entire attractions with neon lights. For example, the Beast's Castle and Rapunzel's Tower.

Personally I prefer a more natural lighting. I was just curious as to whether or not there are specific reasons as to why they use a lot of neon.

When I saw the thread title, I started humming Aldo Nova's "Fantasy"...but I'm probably the only one. :)

I have never really noticed the neon. Will have to look for it. Where else is it?

The lighting they use (a mixture of color blending LEDs and traditional Halogen) is designed to help architectural features "pop" off the landscape, and to help add a bit more whimsy, nay, "Magic" to the way things look at night. I credit their loud-ish lighting design with creating a completely different atmosphere in the parks once the sun goes down.

Tomorrowland is the only major neon installation at the Magic Kingdom, the rest is all standard theatrical lighting. EPCOT does use neon, especially, around Innoventions Plaza, but I think it fits.

Perhaps I appreciate it more, as one whose 2nd major was Theatrical Stagecraft, but I like it. We have all day to appreciate the World under natural light. :)

I think it's in a few other places in the MK, but I can't remember which off the top of my head. It's definitely used in Epcot, and also in a couple places in Hollywood Studios.

Thank you for the response! That does make a lot of sense. I think next time I go I'll be able to look at the neon/theatrical lighting in a different light ;)
