I saw a diving Mickey during 2000, and my wife and I were just imagining how scary it must be inside of that costume. What if something went wrong? Visibility is bad enough underwater, but in a Mickey suit too? That takes some courage I say.

I have a question about the logistics of this. How would it work? Obviously the safety of the CM would come first, but how would you avoid the dangers of being in character as well? Also, does anyone have any pictures of a diving Mickey? I think it would be a great picture to have.

(On a side note, do they have a special water proof costume for this occasion? What makes this costume different from the others? Besides the fact that he is a scuba diver...)

Anyone who can provide any insight on the logistics of a Diving Mickey would be greatly appreciated.

Notes..

From an article in '87 about the Living Seas..

Some fourteen divers are currently engaged on Sea-Base Alpha, half of then women! Kym said no exceptions or discriminations were made for either ______ - and added that in fact that in some situations women divers were more suitable, particularly in training dolphins and sea~lions. It looks very glamorous working as a diver at 'Living Seas', but is in fact extremely hard work - anything up to five hours underwater a day, not only caring for the marine life and conducting experiments but simulating such things as an archaeological dig on the ocean floor for the visiting public! It is with this total immersion in mind that extensive experiments are being carried out in relation to decompression.

Wow, I've never seen Mickey or Goofy jump in the water. never even crossed my mind that they had stuff like that. Must be different types of suits. That would be very cool to see. I'll ask about it when I go this year. You learn something new every day. :)

It has been very very rare.

yeh I saw mickey dive back in august but it was only because there was a wedding going on...I was talking to one of the cast members when it was going on she said you have to pay a couple of thousand to have him appear at your wedding...

To the question of how this works, here is what I was told:

The regulator that you see in Mickey's mouth is the actual regulator, with a long mouth piece that can go back to the diver. For you divers out there this creates a large dead air space which may require more heavy breathing.

The diver has to be able to hold their breath for a minute to qualify for this, since in an emergency it may take that long to have the water drain from the top part of the suit.

There are always two safety divers (Dive Master certified) with Mickey at all times. This is in case something goes wrong, but also to protect Mickey from the turtle (I'm not kidding, it does not like Mickey). I saw this first hand while in the water.

For more pictures, I'll try to rip the DVD that I have from my dive last August. It shows Mickey swimming, and shaking my hand! The DVD was filmed by Disney as part of the package that I signed up for.

I wanted to try to get that job, but I am not fully certified for Scuba yet. I need a few more months. I hope the Diving Mickey job will wait for me...

I think to work in the tank you'll need Dive Master level certification, not just open water. I could be wrong though.

What I can say is the task load of having the suit on in addition to being underwater would be something that should not be done without a lot of scuba experience.

Good luck though, as it would be a blast to do.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but the show is, as of right now, suppose to be titled "Mystic River". I've got a few friends who already got the into from Disney because they're suppose to be in it. Just passing along some news from the dance community :)

Hmm... fascinating...

Maybe a show in the Tarzen Rocks theatre then? All takes place in a big water tank?

That'd be neat.

I don't see them doing a show in the Living Seas tank - the turtle is vicious. I've seen it beat up on divers during feeding time more than once, so I bet it'd not tolerate a show.
