Need help planning a trip in December

First of all I am new to this forum and I am not quite sure how it all works, so please bare with me...

We haven't been to DisneyWorld since 2002 and I'd love to surprise my kids with a trip during their Christmas Vacation. They love the commercial where the parents surprise the kids with a trip to Disney World and even though they are much older (13 & 19) than the kids in the commercial, they would absolutely love the surprise!!

So with that being said, any input you can give on helping us plan a trip with the best price and deals for 15-21 December would be very much appreciated.

What airlines would have the best flight deals?

I also saw that people were talking about DVC and wanted to know what all that entails.

I look forward to the feedback!

Thanks!!!

Wow- I can't help w/ the flights- sorry We drive, but DVC is a very complicated issue and quite an expense. It's basically a "glorified timeshare" that you have for 50 plus years. It works on a points system. The more points you buy, the better vacation you get( just stays though). if you plan your trip, take time to go on a DVC tour: you get free ice cream and some other goodies.:)
If you haven't been to WDW in 10 years, then you're in for a treat!
Crowds are very high around Christmas, and prices can be too, so be careful.
Great surprise! Good luck!:D
PS- The Disney website will give you LOTS of information, and you can chat live w/ a cast member online. Also try allearsnet.com. It has some great advice!

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
A little tidbit...you can stay at a DVC resort as a paying customer and you don't have to buy in the program to do so. We are not DVC members and pay to stay in 1 bedroom villas when we go. And when you pay you get daily housekeeping. DVC members do not get that perk or if you borrow points either. If y'all really like any of the DVC resorts you can book them online like any other room. They are a bit pricey but sooo worth it. Also the discounts for Dec will prob not come out for another month or 2. So keep an eye out for any deals. Even if you decide to book now you can always change it for the discounted if available. :)

What a great surprise! Flights depend on where you live - several airlines in my area are charging less than $300 per person round-trip for December, but you are restricted on the dates and times you fly. Also, the cheapest flights seem to go through Orlando-Sanford instead of Orlando International so you wouldn't be able to use Disney's Magical Express (which handles your luggage and takes you right to your resort).

Welcome! That would be an awesome surprise for a kid of ANY age. I don't know where you live, but I have always found Southwest to have the cheapest flights from my neck of the woods.

As far as planning, you might want to talk to a travel consultant - I use Pixie Vacations to book all of my trips, and I know that Kingdom Konsultants is also a popular one that I've heard good things about. They can advise you on rates and discounts. The first thing I did when I started planning my first trip was to buy a copy of The Unoffcial Guide and I also joined www.touringplans.com. I also downloaded several Disney podcasts, and of course, also found lots of helpful people on here. Happy planning!

The first piece of advice I would give it to check regularly for discounts. We went back for the first time in awhile back in 2008 and were completely unaware that they had discounts (room discounts, free dining, etc.). So, we paid full price when we could have gotten the trip a lot cheaper. I always keep track of discounts through this website or mousesavers.com. Having said that, you can book now and retroactively apply a discount. So, don't wait to book until the discount comes out. But, keep your eyes open because it can save you quite a bit of money.

The second thing I would advise is to make your dining reservations as soon as you book. You can make dining reservations 180 days before the first day of your trip. I know your children are older now, but you may want to try restaurants in Epcot and those can be booked up pretty quickly. So, as soon as you know what days you are going, start thinking of what parks you'll want to do on what days. For example, I always know that day 1 we are going to the Magic Kingdom, so I know to make dining reservations at the Crystal Palace. Try and think through your trip so that you can reserve your dining conveniently. At the end of the day, though, we always get a park hopper so that we can jump from park to park if we're dining in a different park.

The third thing I would recommend is getting the Dining plan. It is much more convenient we think than paying out of pocket for meals.

Another thing I would recommend is that if you research your hotels and determine that staying in a DVC villa is best for you, don't book it directly with Disney. Rent the points from a webiste at http://www.dvcrequest.com/. It much cheaper. Yes, you have to do everything a la carte, but you can still get it all done and may save you some money on your room. I say "may" because Disney has not released a December discount yet. It may be a room discount saving your anywhere from 15%-30% off of your room. So, when you are determining whether to rent points keep that in mind.

Being in December, you probably won't need to upgrade your ticket to a water park ticket because it will be too cold I would think??? But, that upgrade does include a "5th" park in Downtown disney which is like an indoor gaming place. It's called Disney Quest. I've never been because my kids are too young. But, if your kids like video games and such, they may like it.

Also, in December there will be special parties at the Magic Kingdom on certain nights for Christmas. The tickets for this party are an extra cost from your park tickets. But, I would highly recommend going. It is a blast and your kids will get to ride the rides with minimal lines compared to the day time. Because it is so busy in December, keep an eye out for when these tickets go on sale because they could sell out. Also, keep in mind that the Magic Kingdom closes to the general public for this party. So, if you are at the MK on a day when this party is taking place, you will be kicked out essentially at 7pm.

Hope that helps! Have fun!!

Thats great informatoin KC posted;

The dining plan is a great option...takes the worry out of watching your disposable income, just keep in mind that you must pay the gratuity for TS meals out of pocket. You can make ADRs before you book the resort..something to think about.

Disney over Xmas-New Years is amazing..go see the Osborne Lights at DHS!

Welcome to WDWMagic!!
We have actually had clients that have video taped their kids when they tell them that they are going to Disney. It's wonderful to see how excited the kids get!! Are you going to to that? When I book my clients that have either never been or haven't been in a while is we help them select the resort, the tickets and we go over the dining plans to see which will be the best "fit" for their family. I suggest that if you have a specific hotel or room type in mind that you do get it booked soon. Whenever a discount comes out you can usually find it right here on magic and a lot of the time one of the Kingdom Konsultants agents posts it as soon as it's released. A good site for finding cheap air is www.kayak.com which will pull up other sites such as priceline, etc to try to find them the best pricing for their air. Also if you fly mid-week to mid-week (tues, wed, thurs) you can find cheaper air most of the time.

I can't answer on the DVC question since we don't deal with them.

Good luck with your planning!!

I would suggest taking a look at the Unofficial Guide. I'm sure you're library has it, it's an excellent resource. Also the planning DVDs Disney supplies are great introductions as well.

MouseSavers.com can give you a good amount of insight on deals being offered. And, of course, keep checking these forums.

I went with the cheaper airline tickets to Sanford and have to say, when it's all said and done, I don't think it will be worth it. Come to find out, transportation to the World from Sanford is extremely expensive. I'm usually a pretty good trip planner but the extra transportation slipped my mind. If I could cancel my flight and re-book to MCO, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I wanted to book limo service to and from the hotel as an extra special surprise for my son and the cost of it from Sanford to the resort is twice as much as what it is from MCO. Sadly, I don't believe we'll be getting a limo-the cost is almost what it is to spend for one night and an entire day at one of the parks ($400+ rather than $200). I believe watching fares and flying into MCO is the better choice.

Oh No. I'm sorry to hear this. Did you just book the air? Some airlines allow a 24 hour timeline to change your ticket without penalty.

Pam,

I had only booked air at the time and when I realized the extra expense, it had already been 24 hours. I booked on Allegiant Air. I can honestly say, I doubt that I will use that carrier again. By the time the extra fees were added it was still decent airfare but, with the added expense of transportation, the airfare really turned out not to be a good deal. Their "insurance" isn't all it's cracked up to be either. I bought extra vacation insurance.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Did you compare a towncar with a rental car as an option? What have you decided to do?

Pam,

I will likely do the town car. I'm still researching the options. I think he'd still get a kick out of riding in the Town Car-I do not want to drive :O. Quicksilver is as of right now, at the top of my list. Should you have any other ideas, I'm open to those suggestions. My biggest thing is that we will be arriving around 8:30 p.m. on December 13 so I really don't want to ride share (no offense to anyone). If we were able to take DME it wouldn't bother me but if we're paying for our transportation, I'd like it to be just the two of us and be able to go straight to the resort and be able just to "ooo and ah" on our way together, if that makes any sense.

On a side note, I've heard that lots of folks (in my local area) are very disappointed in Allegiant (even though it's a non-stop flight) and there is rumor that because of these transportation issues and other complaints, they are likely to end service here. If that is the case and it happens before our trip, I'd pop the extra in air fare to go straight to MCO.

(Sorry for the thread hi-jack.)

I would suggest seeking the help of a WDW vacation planner like Kingdom Konsultants. They can plan your entire trip and if discounts come out later, they will make sure they are applied to your trip. Having not been to WDW since 2002, a LOT of things have changed and December is a very popular time to travel.

Kingdom Konsultants will send you a free trip quote and they do not charge for their services! What's not to like!!

Planning a trip to WDW can be overwhelming and if you're not like most of us on this forum (who visit this site everyday and are obsessive about our planning!) the help of a travel agent will be invaluable!

I booked in December with free dining--I got an email on it for the offer and that was in may--they should be opening up to the public soon
