Need help finding a new camera

i am in search of a new camera. i have had my canon powershot sd800 since december of 2005, so i am really in need of a new camera. i'm not looking for a really high end aka expensive camera but i do want something that takes really good pictures. this is my wants list for a camera. if you know a good one that matches what i am looking for, i would love the help!

camera needs:
small enough to fit in my purse
take pictures quickly (one after another without delay)
relatively large zoom lens

Shooting from the hip, I'd say a Canon SX200IS. A lot in a little package. Good zoom range, weighs 8 ounces, and has Image Stablization. See http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_sx200is.asp. There are probably some others that would fit your needs but I'm a strong believer in both the overall build quality of Canon products and their consistent high regard for image quality that the camera produces.

I mean, I love the features and price points of most Panasonics - just can't deal with those noisy chips they put in most units.

It is a bit pricey though. But you didn't spec a $ range.

I might consider a Sony DSC-H20... it would give you 10x optical zoom, which should meet your zoom requirement... you can even use it to shoot 720p video... the only question is whether it will fit your purse. It isn't quite as thin as a canon but in the end you are going to have to decide between small size and large zoom... you can't really have both...

The only thing to remember if you decide to go with a Sony vs. a Canon is that they use different memory chips so your old SDs wouldn't work in the Sony.... But having owned both Canon and Sony point and shoots I think the trade off is worth it if you want more zoom.

me again. i never did get a new camera and now my canon powershot sd800 has taken its last photo. something is wrong with the flash so instead of trying to get it fixed, i figure its time to get a new camera. i really like canon cameras and would like to get a new one that is similar to the sd800. i am considering the sd1200. does anyone else own this camera or know anything about it? any other good canons out there? im looking to get a camera in the 150 - 250 price range, preferrably on the lower end of that spectrum. thanks in advance.

Great camera for travel

We bought a Canon SX10 IS (10 mp) for our trip to Disney this year and have been very happy with it. The 20x optical zoom is great for bringing the action closer. It has advanced features (for me) but is also easy to use on automatic (for my wife). Paid just over $300 online.

My Canon point and shoot is at the higher end of your price range, but I'll go ahead and give you my opinion on it.

After doing quite a bit of research and playing with the cameras in a store, I recently purchased the Canon Powershot SD780 IS. I previously had a sony point and shoot, and the difference is like night and day. I love this little camera...I love it so much, that I find myself using it more than my DSLR that I purchased last year. It also has high definition video recording. We did not even take our video camera out of its bag on our recent trip...the video quality on the Canon is incredible!

I was surprised I chose Canon, because after doing tons of research on dslr's last year I went with a Nikon (which I do not regret...I love my Nikon D60), but I liked Canon's point and shoots better than Nikon's.

We just got DS7 a Nikon Coolpix s230. It's a really cool little camera and he's taken alot of really good shots with it so far.
