I'm hoping to rent points for an AKL stay next September. There will be 4 of us (me, DH, DD7, and DS1). We are going to get a studio (we don't need tons of room). Should we get a room in Jambo or Kidani? Should we go for a savannah view? Anything else I should know?

Pros/Cons time.
They both have great kids activists so it's a draw there,
Kidani has the better pool area for kids
Kidani is the first bus stop between the two houses
They both have rooms that can be very far from the bus queue and also have rooms that are close.
Jambo has the only QS meal option but the Kidani gift shop does serve grab and go breakfast and Kidani's pool does serve QS type food.
Jambo has Jiko, which is awesome, and Kidani has Sanaa, which is also awesome.

I suppose that would be helpful. I guess convenience would be something good as in how far apart things are (bus, pool, lobby). A nice pool and some food options. Kids activities would be a plus.
Both have awesome pools and play areas for kids. Kidani has the community room where kids can play games etc. They have activities in the lobby for kids etc daily where they learn about some aspect of Africa from the CMs. You can go out on the lookout to the savannahs off the lobby at either and chat with an animal specialist about the animals and their particular country. Last year I spent a decent amount of time having an awesome convo w/ the CM that was out at Kidani at the time about Tanzania (he was shocked I knew where it was and things about it).

At Kidani the bus is right off one section of the lobby.

As far as it's concerned, Jambo has the quick service "the Mara" as well as two TS Boma and Jiko. But Kidani has Sanaa. Either way there is a shuttle van that takes you bt the two and it takes about 10mins to walk bt the two. It's really up to you. If you need to know more specifically, let me know. AKL is our "home".

Is the savannah view worth the extra money?
Worth is subjective.

Are there plenty of viewing areas for free all through the resort? You betcha! Can you take advantage of those areas in your socks and underwear? Probably not for long. ;) Do I like waking up at dawn and sitting on my balcony watching giraffe, zebra, and dear graze while sipping my coffee without ever having to leave my room? Heck yes I do! Truthfully, only you can answer the worth question. We've done savanna views many times and never regretted it.

Absolutely agree with @lostpro9het on this one. We've done savannah view, and will again in a few months. Never a regret.

Have stayed at Kidani twice when kids where 2 and then 5 and 2, both times in May. Visited Jambo many times, the walk over is not bad at all. We always requested (and got) "near the pool" as it is not to far from the lobby and we visited the pool a bunch of times. The pool bar does have a limited but sufficiently varied food options. It think the pool is better at Kidani. It has a more laid back feel and the kids water play area is one of the best I think on property. Sanaa is a wonderful restaurant and we ate there numerous times. I believe they started serving breakfast there also. We have never had a Savannah view room. We where hardly in the room enough to think it was worth it. There are numerous windows you can look out in the hallways, as well as animal viewing locations near the pool and the main lobby. Kidani has a more relaxed feel overall. One of the other great benefits also is that park buses stop first at Kidani.

Every time someone asks about savannah vs/standard view I recommend the Touring Plans room finder. They have a map that shows how each room is classified at Jambo/Kidani. There are a great number of standard view rooms that do indeed overlook savannah, but simply have a less than ideal view. It may overlook "people pens", fencing, gates, etc. Some standard view rooms may overlook parking lots, but a bunch don't. For instance, below is the view from our standard view studio at Jambo from last week.

We are renting points for AKL in two weeks, I didnt specify which one I wanted and we ended up with Kidani. I think when you are renting you need to be a smidge more flexible. We were more determined to ensure we got a real 2 bedroom instead of the lock off, so I didnt specify a specific house.

I believe your request for a dedicated 2BR meant you were going to be in Kidani. Since Jambo was converted from hotel rooms, I think they had to work with existing load bearing walls and such, so the 2BRs were all lock offs. Jambo does have all the value villas (book up really fast) along with the only DVC concierge units (also book up really fast). Other than those differences, if you book early enough you should be able to choose, but booking later on Kidani will have more availability just due to the fact it has more units.

Gotcha. I just didnt want anyone sleeping on a sofa bed the whole week, so I was specific about wanting the second bedroom to have the two real beds.

Never stayed at Jambo but stayed in a room at Kidani a few years ago. We loved the savanna view while we were there. We were way out at the end of the building, and it was a 10 minute walk through the halls to get back to the lobby. If you're not big on walking, that may be an issue. They did have parking under the building, so if you have a car, you can park closer to your room.

You could also pay the premium for a Savannah view room and have the worst savannah view that exists. We had a SV room once that had an ankole cattle tied to a tree so they could say animals were there. You had an occasional ostrich roam by, but almost the whole time there, that ankole cattle was all that was there. It was just 1 there and that is all.

With all the opportunity and places to view animals there, I would go for the cheapest room possible unless the guarantee a room on Arusha Rock view.

I just wrote this review for another board. (its copy and pasted, so somethings may have already been dicussed)

We did Animal Kingdom Lodge DVC this last trip. Los of pros and cons.

first thing to know, there are 2 separate resorts there and both are HUGE. Jambo is the main house, it has the large grand lobby, the quick service location and 2 of the 3 AKL restaurants—Jiko and Boma. There is a mix of standard and DVC rooms there. Kidani is the DVC only resort beside it. The layout is very similar except for no grand lobby and no real QS location except for the pool bar. Sanaa is here an it is a great restaurant. From what I hear, Kidani has the better pool and water slide. There is a van shuttle that runs back and forth between the resorts. They each have their own bus location, but share buses, with the 1st pickup and drop off at Kidani and then Jambo.

We stayed at Jambo, and my in-laws stayed at Kidani

Pros:
• Beautiful resort: While I'm not into African decor, it was really ornately decorated and you really felt the African vibe throughout the resort. Lots of artifacts and historic items.
• Animals: I mean, really, its the reason you go there...and they deliver. If you have a savanna room, you'll see zebras, giraffes, and a bunch of different types of antelope type animals. We were able to see them from our balcony, but it took a few days to find their pattern. I expected to wake up and be like Ace Ventura, but there was nothing. It wasnt till we came back mid day one day and thats when we saw the most of them. Both resorts have a main savanah area near the center of the resort and there are times when viewing is spectacular. (that was cell phone with no real zoom)
• Night vision. Every night they have a set up where you can view the animals through some military grade night vision goggles. Very stinkin cool. They are magnifying goggles so you can almost make out the whiskers on their faces...at night.
• Cultural: each day they had educational and cultural lessons at both resorts for the kids taught by CM's actually from Africa. The kids got a special bead that they tied into a string after each lesson.
• Room size: The DVC studio room there is the largest (by a few feet) of the other DVC studios. And it felt even larger b/c of the layout.

Cons:
• Size: the place is HUGE. We unfortunately got stuck in the last room on our wing and it literally was over 1/4 mile from the main lobby, and 1/3rd of a mile to the pool, QS or bus. At the pool, my son told me he left his swim goggles back in the room...so guess what? He learned to swim without them. lol. In all honesty, it made for a looooong walk back after the parks.
• Kidani: The downside of Kidani is that there is no QS location there. So if you have the refill mugs and like to get your coffee in the morning, it'll be cold by the time you go back to your room.
• Distance: It really is separated from the rest of the property. It is very close to Animal Kingdom and Blizzard beach, but that's about it. Anything else you can expect a good ride back and forth.

We have Jambo as our home resort. We have allegiance there. It's big and glamorous in African décor. It has a great pool that has plenty of room to enjoy with the kids.

Two nice restaurants that serve foods that are out of this world. If you want just quick service....it is a short walk outside under a covered walkway (very important during those spotty rain showers that Florida has on occasion) Everything is within the building.

Kidani in the other hand is smaller (u don't understand Disneys reasoning for this since it is a DVC resort. There is no real good food service besides "grab and go." No sitting area for those who want to sit and eat.

The pool and outdoor activities are across the parking lot. Not crazy about that set up. The pool is nice...don't get me wrong there.

The one great point I think Kidani has is the under building parking for those of us who drive down to Disney. If you like taking you car out to parks or store errands then coming back to a parking spot directly below you room then this is a plus!

All in all both resorts have their good points as well as their bad.

Can't say much about whether or not to pick Kidani/Jambo, since I have yet to stay at Jambo. But, with that being said, I have stayed at kidani multiple times and have always splurged for a savanna view. Seeing the animals from our room is almost all of the reason why we stay there as opposed to some other DVC resorts.

I don't think you could go wrong with either Kidani or Jambo :)
