NBA Experience at Disney Springs

I don't have a lot of facts to hand, but my feeling is that NBA has a much much smaller global appeal than FOOTBALL šŸ˜‰ Here's my very limited research.

Well, nothing compares to soccer when it comes to worldwide appeal. Thatā€™s like comparing Disneyā€™s movie entertainment franchises versus anyone else.

However, the NBA definitely has the most international appeal among the 4 major US sports leagues, particularly in markets that are more important to Disney World target audiences. People in China have zero idea about who Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are, but NBA stars (and even middling players) are widely known names there.

A lot of the comments here seem to have the feel of, ā€œI donā€™t like the NBA, therefore this is going to fail!ā€ Thatā€™s so absolutely ridiculous when looking at the NBA audience stats, which are younger, more urban, more educated, and more international compared to the other sports leagues. This basically hits every demo that Disney World would want to target in an attraction.

To be sure, Iā€™m a heavy watcher of football, baseball, basketball and hockey at all levels. For some reason, it seems as if though people go out of their way to point out that they donā€™t like the NBA if only because they donā€™t want to admit or somehow deny that itā€™s actually popular. Itā€™s like the people that just deny that a music act that sells a lot of albums or a movie that sells a lot of tickets isnā€™t popular simply because they personally donā€™t like them. Iā€™m not really a Taylor Swift fan, but if I own a music venue that wants to make money, then you can be sure that Iā€™ll do anything reasonably possible to get Taylor Swift to play there. On balance, Disney generally makes more good business decisions than bad ones (even if we might not personally like all of them).

For the millionth time. This is an NBA venture pursued by the NBA because they were mad at Universal. Wide demographic appeal doesnā€™t matter, the NBA is paying rent and a cut of sales to Disney. Disney isnā€™t going to care if there are more fans of whatever so long as the check clears. If the NFL or ECHL or whatever other league wants to do something Iā€™m sure Disney would accept their money as well.

Thank you LazyBoy97o! This just completely explained the situation to me. I kept wondering what Disney was thinking with this one and I now get it. There were a few thousand things Iā€™d have preferred to see put here but Iā€™m sure none were offering Disney the cash the NBA did. Itā€™s just business. That being said, I can ignore it and not let it distract me again.

Wow that is more of a letdown than I had even anticipated...What a bleak looking and pedestrian store...I think out local Dick's Sporting Goods Store is more interesting looking.... I didn't have high expectations when they said the NBA Experience was moving in... So I guess it is pretty much as disappointing as I expected.

Starting to get serious deja vu after seeing the pictures. Didn't they try a store like this a few years ago, a smaller version in Disney Springs?

I don't think the "experience" in "The NBA Experience" was ever meant to refer to the gift shop, which, BTW, is not Disney's responsibility, but the NBA's.

If one passes by The NBA Experience because their gift shop wasn't anything special. OK, you have your priorities, thanks for sharing.

and the DisneyQuest store really showed off what the rest of the experience was didn't it?

Don't judge a museum by its gift shop.
