Can you buy custom WDW name badges like the CM's wear or do they not do that so people don't pose as staff?

I don't know if they do now or not. I know that there used to be a kiosk cart at the far end of the town square where you could buy them, engraved and all. Now that it is brought up though, I can't say that I remember seeing them for quite a long time now.

They used to sell red ones that didn't look exactly like a CM tag. Personally I think it's a terrible idea to sell them. Many parents teach their kids that if they ever get separated to find someone with that name tag and tell them you can't find your parents.

They use to...I recall seeing one's with some characters on them including This Figment one..
But, the only one's they are bringing out is exclusive during Star wars weekends...

They sold them during "Happiest Celebration on Earth" a number of years ago. I got one for myself and one for my son. We get lots of compliments from CMs whenever we visit.
The ones they sold were various colours, but not white. CMs wear white nametags [and now "Legacy" CMs wear blue ones]. Any of the ones I've seen are clearly not CM badges, they have characters or the Star Tours emblem on them.

You know you'd think they'd make a mint with those Metal name tag engraving machines that they have scattered throughout the resort. Now if they only had CM name tags in them I would think they'd be popular..This is the one I am reffering to...

The trouble with that is Disney likes to have strict control over names engraved/sewn onto their merchandise. Even programming bad or dirty words as not allowed, people can be very creative...You know you'd think they'd make a mint with those Metal name tag engraving machines that they have scattered throughout the resort. Not necessarily as critical with pets' tags.

This. Considering the huge variety of costumes CMs can wear, many of which may not look like costumes at all (managers in khakis, some of the Epcot costumes which are basically t-shirts), the name badges are often the only reliable way for an average guest to tell if someone is a Cast Member. I have to admit I find the idea of selling badges which allow guests to impersonate CMs somewhat disturbing.
Guests could wreak a lot of havoc impersonating CMs, from manipulating children to giving false information about ride closings and wait times. No offense to anybody.

I posted a picture of Tuna Tom. He's a guy, named Tom. He used to show up at the parks several times a week and eat at Columbia Harbor House. He wore a nametag (that said Tom) and keyfob, and liked to pretend he was a cast member (helping out with parades and such)...
He hasn't been spotted in while...from what I know (and I only go annually anymore). Last I recall seeing him was in 2010...I hope he hasn't passed on.

Surely that's not a good thing though... As much as he might love doing it and love disney like we do wanting to help and pass on knowledge that is crossing the line don't you think?

I don't know his history, so I can't say yes or no. I've heard he used to be a Cast Member, and is now retired, but I've heard other stories.
As with the doll lady at Grand Floridian (who has a very deep story), I don't fault those that wish to spend their time (and money, APs cost money) making others happy at WDW...

I know the back story of the GF lady and I don't believe she has ever portrayed herself as a CM. I am a little concerned with Tuna Tom though as I don't believe anyone should be representing themselves as a CM when they (currently) are not.
I used to be a CM and I am 100% a "tourist" when I visit Disney now. I would never act as a CM while I'm there. I have had conversations with people in line ups etc and have told a few I am a former CM but if they ask for any details or help I usually just say that I'm out of the loop now and they should ask a CM to be sure. I can give minor advice about my favourite rides and things but anything else they can ask a CM.
