MYW ticket question

DH wanted me to verify something before we go down, maybe some wise members can back me up here (JP maybe?).

My plan this time is to get 10-day base tickets. So, they will expire and will not have hopper option. There will be a couple of days when we DO want to change parks and plan to use up another day on the ticket. Will this work or are you only allowed one park to be swiped per day? Would a 10 day ticket equal 10 swipes at any time or 10 different dates?

You are only allowed to do 1 park per day on the base option. Personally, I think it would be rather boring to only be in one park for a full day (the only park that really needs a full day from me is the Magic Kingdom, and the very first time I went I was done by 2pm). It's totally worth the extra $40 per ticket. Plus it only makes ADRs inconvenient as opposed to controlling.

If what you were suggesting were allowed, park hopping would be basically free. Most people visit for less than 10 days, and buying the extra days on a base ticket under MYW pricing costs only a few dollars.

Ok let's look at the numbers, for example.

10-day MYW base ticket = $255
5-day MYW with hopping = $215

WDW makes more money if I choose to use a 10-day ticket for visiting 2 parks on 5 days.

Of course this is not the most practical way to buy tickets but if you're not sure how you are going to use the days it just gives more flexibility. Most people are not going to want to use up a whole day park admission for just a few hour hop.

I'm not sure where you got those numbers, but prices on AllEars are listed as $276.90 for a 5 day hopper and $239.63 for a 10 day.

From the official site, however it's actually $225 for the 10 day (darn decimal points) and $260 for the 5-day hopper. Now I see that there is a higher cost for the 5 day hopper. I guess I'm just getting the hopper. It's just that we rarely hop, maybe one or two days out of 2 weeks. Hmm will have to look at this again.

Here's what I suggest to everyone who's not sure about whether or not they want/need the Park Hopper option, especially if money is tight:

Don't pre-purchase the Park Hopper, just buy a Base Ticket for the number of days you'll need. Then, while you're on your trip, if you decide that you *really* need the Park Hopper option, you can easily add it to your ticket. (It only takes a couple minutes at Guest Relations or a ticket window)

That way, if you go the entire trip without needing it, you've saved yourself some money. But if you do need it, it's not a big deal to add.
Plus, when the time comes to decide whether or not you want to add it, the price tag might help you find a reason to stay in the park you're already in and not hop... ;)
