MyMagic+ questions after watching the D11 video....

No my wife and son also have smart phones, but do not take them into the parks either. They do not want to have them with them either. Vacation for us means getting away from the day to day stuff and staring at a 6 to 9 square inch screen. We all stick together at the parks, so communications is not an issue. But heck I can always get a GAC and bypass the line, after all they cannot ask you what your handicap/medical condition is.

You could just a put the phone in airplane mode. You would have to use wi-fi only but no calls/texts would come through until you turn it back. You could also turn off your email notifications. Then you wouldn't have anyone bothering you and you could just throw the phone in your wife's bag (if she carries one). Then you just forget you even brought the phone with you unless you need to rearrange your FP+

That would work except that it is on a blackberry server system and emails and texts will still come thru on the wifi side. Also she does not carry a bag in the parks. When we go all we have on us is our clothes, drivers license, key to the rental car, keys to the world, American express, and $200 cash.
I am not going to worry about it, as I go every year for 8 to 10 days, and do not rush or worry about getting on/doing everything. But I do appreciate your comments and ideas. We will just leave the phones in the room safe as we always do.

:) I do believe one of the questions in that link clearly stated, you won't need a smartphone to use the system. You can book in advance and change your plans at FP+ kiosk. So no need to worry, leave your phone home!

I think I would need my smartphone anyway b/c I am obsessed with the touringplans app and will absolutely need my smartphone for that. :D

Not to mention corralling wandering members of our party. This happens all the time, not just at a place like a theme park.

This is why my husband had to get a second private phone instead of using the same phone for work and personal. He is like you getting tons of call, texts and emails everyday and he knows the longer he is on the phone the more bored I get and the next thing you know I'm in a gift shop buying stuff;)

I have always kept my private phone separate. Mostly b/c most companies state that once a phone number is used for business, they own that phone number. Now I have not heard this happen to anyone, but they could claim that number from you, even if it was your private number before you were at that company. I have had my number for 15 years, so it has been important to me to keep it.

Lines is often the reason I bring a phone to the parks! Kinda mad at them for making something I like enough to force me to take a phone to the parks!

It is also handy for talking to others and asking how much longer they'll be in line or whatever. :)

I"m still trying to understand all of the talk about the magic bands. So, from what I understand, you will be able to use them as your hotel key? Also as your pass into the parks? What hotels do you think it will be operating at in the first half of November this year? Or is there no idea about this yet? I"ll be at Saratoga Springs for part of my stay, Pop Century at the other part.

My one and only question is whether or not they'll make AP holders use these things. I want to hear from Disney that we will not have to do that.

NOBODY including AP holders (me included) will "have" to use them -- you can continue to use your KTTK cards and your AP cards as usual. That is why they are now RFID enabled. You "opt in" to using the wristband. Disney is well aware that many people do NOT want to use the wristbands, and they will not have to.

Booking ahead for the FP rides is only a portion of the daily fastpass allotment. Daily fastpasses will still be available at the park, but you will book them at kiosks that will "program" your wristband or RFID card instead of spitting out a paper ticket. The downside to not having a smartphone is that you won't be able to "see" your time printed out anywhere unless they enable some type of texting system to regular non-smart phones. None of that is rolled out yet -- and I don't expect any of this to appear in the parks at all until 4th quarter IF EVEN THEN. This could very well not even roll out until next year....

I think the concept of the wristbands is VERY intriguing though I would personally never wear one. The implementation of this is a totally different thing, and they aren't going to roll it out until they know it works -- right now it doesn't....I was involved in testing just a few weeks ago for a second time, and I had some of the same problems I had four months ago.

If the point of the wristbands is to free people up from having to carry things, needing a phone kind of undoes that, IMO.
good point...
Personally, I always have my phone with me. Although we get photopass, I think we had 200+ pics on our phones, camera, plus videos, etc. Plus if my kids somehow get separated from me I want to have a phone on me just in case... I do keep a close watch on my kids but you never know!

Definitely! I don't have "Lines" but I do like to use other apps and the maps. I usually know my way around wo a map but I like to have them anyway. I'm a visual person... but I don't like to carry them. hehe

Hey I will have to do and update, but Disney actually called me at my house and left me a number and name of someone to speak with about my fastpass+ questions. I plan on calling today or tomorrow and will post what I find out.

So there is ONE person in all of WDW that can talk to you about this?

Evidently.... He left me a voice mail on my home phone. He left his name and direct phone line, and said he was very interested in talking to me about my questions of the new fastpass+ system. I tried yesterday, but his voice mail says he is only in the office on Monday, Tuesday, and Fridays...

One of my recent concerns (feel free to add this to your question list, ddrongowski!) is how difficult it will be to temporarily link, and then de-link, accounts. (Profiles? I don't quite have the lingo down yet.)

For instance, if you run into someone you know while in the parks, can one person reserve, via smartphone or otherwise, Fastpasses for both? Do your accounts have to be linked to do so? (My interpretation of their literature is 'yes,' otherwise people will be reserving numbers of FPs far above their needs.) Currently, one person takes all of the group's KTTW cards and does a FP run. What would the MM+ equivalent be? Or would you have to stand around on your phones, crossing your fingers that you get the exact same FP window at the same time?

Ditto for the reverse--if you're linked with people but want to get FP+ for a different park, can your profile go solo? Example: family of four, Mom does all of the account setup and planning, but the day before the trip, 16-year-old son says he wants to do DHS on a day when the family is going to MK. Can Mom cancel one of the family's four FP+ profiles for the day (without having to cancel the entire FP+ reservation) and re-reserve Son for [whatever is still available at] DHS? Would Son have to log in and do it himself? If he prefers to do so, could Son do it himself, or would Mom have to do everything, since she signed up as the family's 'lead' profile?

(I'm sure a lot of these will become clearer once the program officially starts and picks up speed. If anyone can shed a little light, I'd greatly appreciate it!)
